Sable Sorensen’s Fury Bound is the second book in the Wolves of Ruin series, picking up immediately after the tumultuous events of its predecessor, Direbound. The first novel introduces Meryn Sturmfrost, a commoner from the slums of Sturmfrost who fights in underground pits to support her family. The society of Nocturna, Meryn’s country, is shown to be driven by class and gender biases. Its most prominent feature is the presence of sentient creatures called direwolves. Warriors—usually from noble families—bond with a direwolf for life after brutal trials. The warriors, known as the Bonded after finishing their trials, join elite packs, such as Strategos, experts at strategy, and Daemos, known for their ruthlessness in battle and “impelling,” or using matter-bending magic.
Meryn’s life is upended when her younger sister, Saela, is kidnapped by Siphons, the vampiric antagonists from the neighboring kingdom of Astreona. To rescue Saela, Meryn enters the Bonding Trials, hoping to join the war on the front lines. During her training, Meryn discovers the shocking truth that she’s the last descendant of the Sturmfrost queens, the original rulers of Nocturna, whose throne was usurped centuries ago by the Siphon king Alistair Brightbane.
