Fury Bound examines the blurred line between power and tyranny, with the powerful always poised to lapse into violence and corruption. As Meryn reclaims her throne, she inherits the power to control shadows, the magic driven by her rage. This presents a conundrum before Meryn: She needs to use her magic to fight her many enemies, yet its source makes the power volatile. Meryn’s conundrum represents her effort to temper the vast power she has inherited with ethics, strategy, and wisdom. If she gives in to the lure of the power, she will morph into yet another tyrant, much like Killian and his predecessors.

The narrative highlights the destructive potential of Meryn’s powers through the violence she unwittingly performs. She kills rebels at the arena and later causes the death of Gerhold’s innocent family. Yet the fact that she feels a sense of shame at her actions indicates that she is aware of the horrors of absolute power. Even though killing Herhold and his family secures her authority through fear, Meryn is aware that it costs her a piece of her humanity, leaving her to wonder, “Who have I become?” (177). Meryn needs to exercise her authority in a hostile world, but in a manner that is just rather than vengeful.
