Keeping the priestess as a possible intelligence source, Meryn and Stark split up to evacuate the collapsing city. Meryn calls for reinforcements through her bond, and Noemi and Venna arrive. At the main gates, Meryn smashes the doors open with shadebending; she and Stark then combine their powers to lift an entire wall section aside, creating a second exit. Stark goes to help a man whose son is trapped while Meryn clears the southern gates with the impelling magic of Daemos. When the shaking stops, Meryn climbs a hill above the ruins, confirms that the Tear is in her pack, and privately names it the Tear of destruction. Stark arrives with the captive Mother Priestess, and Meryn demands answers.

The group rejoins Noemi and Venna at a survivor camp outside the walls and agrees that they must leave immediately. Over one citizen’s tearful objection, Meryn addresses the crowd, promises to return and rebuild, and then departs for Lucien and Elias’s camp.

As they near camp, Venna senses danger moments before an arrow pierces Skaia’s throat. Jonah’s Bonded emerge from the trees. Meryn seizes the Tear of destruction—its power erasing her exhaustion—and tears open a massive fissure that swallows much of Jonah’s force. Upon hearing Venna’s dying breaths, she stops.

Lucien reluctantly agrees and then removes his two Tears and gives them to Meryn so that she can enter the fight at full strength. Meryn accepts and immediately feels the surge of six combined Tears. Lucien carries the unconscious Venna away with Elias at Siphon speed. Meryn orders the others to rest and resupply and then tells Stark that she needs one final conversation with Killian in the shadow realm.

He declares his love, and she claims to love him too. He confirms that he’s camped outside Blumenfall and expects her in the morning.

Meryn wakes to find that the lip wound didn’t follow her out of the realm. Stark is awake and watching. Distressed by what she said about delivering him, she reaches for him, and he reassures her. Fully herself, Meryn draws her dagger and severs Killian’s wrist, sending the Tear ring hand to the ground. Noemi, also freed, stabs Killian. He seizes Stark by the throat and reveals his purpose: Imprisoned for millennia, he has waited for the Tears’ convergence to act. He demands that the gems be brought together to complete his release. Stark resolves to do the opposite and help Meryn scatter them permanently. Nocturn reads the thought and erupts in fury.

Back in the waking world, Nocturn seizes Stark’s body. Stark remains conscious but helpless as his hands reforge the shattered Dire Blade and arrange all seven Goddess Tears on the floor in the star pattern from Meryn’s mother’s journal: six in a ring, one at the center. When the final gem is placed, the possession ends—but too late.
