He is a master strategist, demonstrated by his complex plan at Cliffhelm, where he uses his knowledge of the land and his soldiers’ unique abilities to defeat a much larger fae force. His leadership is grounded in trust, honor, and a willingness to make difficult choices for his people. He rallies his soldiers with the vow that they will “stand our ground until [they] can no longer stand” (233), showing his commitment to Orea’s defense, even at the cost of his own life. His relationship with Slade is complex, defined by brotherly love, frustration at Slade’s disregard for his royal duties, and a deep-seated desire for his older brother’s respect. Wickum “Wick” Almon Turley is a round, dynamic character who serves as the leader of the Vulmin resistance and a direct link to Auren’s forgotten past. He’s Auren’s second cousin, but he keeps his Turley heritage a secret due to the immense guilt he feels for abandoning her during the attack on Bryol when they were children. He confesses to Auren, “I was there, Auren, and I let them take you” (364), revealing that his lifelong dedication to the Vulmin cause is a form of atonement for what he perceives as his greatest failure.
