Professional hockey player Rio DeLuca is on a second date with a woman named Chelsea, who’s primarily interested in the financial perks of his career. When Rio rejects her suggestion to go back to his place for sex, she reveals that she has backup plans and leaves him at the restaurant. Having just returned to Chicago, Illinois, after spending the off-season with his mother in Boston, Massachusetts, Rio checks in with his friend group via text before visiting his best friend, Indy, and her husband, Ryan, a professional basketball player. He tells them about the failed date but hides the fact that he avoids casual hookups and prefers a deeper connection.

After arriving home, Rio speaks with his neighbor Wren Wilder, whose house was renovated over the summer. Wren mentions that her new roommate is the designer responsible, an intern for the famous Tyler Braden. Concerned that his own house won’t sell for a good price, Rio asks for the designer’s contact information, as he’s considering leaving Chicago to play for his hometown team in Boston.
