In the hospital waiting room, Rio speaks with Luke for the first time in six years. He meets Luke’s wife, Sarah, and learns that they have a two-year-old son, Hudson. Rio apologizes for his past behavior, but Luke admits that he also abandoned his sister and can’t judge Rio. When Hallie asks Rio to join her and her father, Luke encourages him to stay with Hallie this time.
Mr. Hart looks frail but is in good spirits. He insists that Hallie return to her life in Chicago with Rio, telling Rio to take care of her. Alone with Rio, Mr. Hart reveals that he’s in remission from non-Hodgkin lymphoma for a second time. He explains the sacrifices that Hallie made for him over the past six years: She dropped out of college, moved to Minnesota to be his caregiver, sold their home, and worked odd jobs to cover medical costs. He adds that Hallie’s mother is no longer in their lives and that Luke was absent until recently. When Rio asks when he was first diagnosed, Mr. Hart says that Hallie should be the one to tell him. Rio is overcome with guilt, realizing that the pain Hallie caused him was nothing compared to the hardships she faced alone.
