Conclusion Summary: “Your Future Is in Your Hands”

The authors feel that their young readers are now more informed about online apps and their drawbacks than many other kids and even adults. They are hopeful that young people will begin to use tech as a helpful tool, and not let it use them. They urge the reader to get out into the real world, learn things, make mistakes, discover themselves. They feel that rebels have more control over their lives and have richer life experiences and relationships, too. Rebels can inform their friends about what they know, and ask parents and teachers for help learning without distractions. They can also write or call lawmakers and ask for more to be done to protect kids from addictive and unsafe apps.

The writers’ final words to the reader ask them to use their knowledge to protect themselves and, if possible, others. This conclusion asks the reader to think about how being a “rebel” might not only help them, but their whole generation, framing the problem as a pressing social issue. By asking teens to talk to parents, teachers, and politicians, the authors acknowledge their influence and ask them to recognize their own agency in shaping their digital and real-life worlds.
