Plot Summary

The Ballad of Falling Dragons takes place in a world populated by many fantastical creatures, including dragons who form deep emotional bonds with the human-like fae who ride them. When a dragon dies, it rises into the sky to become a moon. Occasionally—for reasons no one knows—these moons fall from the sky with disastrous consequences for those on the ground. King Kaan Vaegor of The Burn is grieving his beloved, Elluin Neván, who died and was carried off by her dragon, Slátra, who became a moon. This moon fell to Earth, and Elluin returned to life without her memories, renaming herself Raeve. She was then captured by the Scavenger King, Arkyn Vaegor (Kaan’s half-brother), who forced her to fight monsters for the entertainment of his paying audiences. Kaan finds her and rescues Raeve, then dedicates himself to finding the scattered moonshards of Slátra in the hope of restoring Raeve’s memory of her life as Elluin. Meanwhile, a miskunn (a creature who can see the future) foresees a catastrophic moonfall event that threatens the entire world. His partial manifestation on the physical plane is so powerful it triggers the catastrophic moonfall, shaking the world apart. Back in the Pits of Khindard, Arkyn reveals his identity to a shackled Kaan: He is Kaan’s older half-brother and the secret leader, the Elding, of the Fíur du Ath. He orders Raeve, as his champion fighter the “Fire Lark,” to execute Kaan in the arena. As Raeve is about to deliver a staged final blow, Rygun crashes through the arena’s roof. Unleashing her full, terrifying power, Raeve summons the gods Ignos (of fire) and Bulder (of the ground), destroying the pit.

As moons rain from the sky, Arkyn escapes on his mythical Elding Bird. Kaan gives chase on Rygun, pursuing him south into the freezing territory of The Shade. The frigid air weakens Rygun, and in a vicious battle within the Moving Mists, Rygun is mortally wounded but manages to ground his opponent. Kaan too is mortally wounded in the fall, but he summons the strength to kill Arkyn, avenging his family. As Rygun and Kaan lie dying, they are saved by the sudden arrival of the Great Silver Sabersythe, Ahra, now bonded with Kaan’s second-in-command, Grihm. Meanwhile, Raeve is guided by the Creator Clode to the mountaintop where the moonfall began. She finds Kyzari in the arms of the dissipating Caelis. In this moment, Raeve fully accepts her past and her identity as Elluin Neván, including her own death and rebirth through Slátra’s sacrifice. She holds her daughter for the first time as the world burns around them.

The battle for the world is far from over. Pyrok, waiting in Gore, is reunited with a miraculously alive Essi, who has been living in Raeve’s hidden apartment and caring for Ahvi’s hatchling, Gruffin. In the smoldering plains of The Shade, Sereme finds Arkyn’s corpse. Using a piece of his flesh for a new blood bind, she performs a ritual, reviving the Elding Bird from its master’s ashes and binding it to herself. She then encounters a resurrected Haedeon Neván, Elluin’s long-dead brother. Kaan and Raeve are finally on the path to reunite their family, but the world is fractured, and new, ancient powers are stirring in the ashes.
