On the night her husband, Leonardo “Leo” Torres, asks for a divorce, April Torres escapes their burning house with their infant son, Otto, and a book. Leo runs back inside and emerges with their daughter, Sadie, just as the structure begins to collapse. The fire started in the kitchen, and April realizes with horror that she likely left a stove burner on after Leo’s announcement.
While paramedics treat a hyperventilating Sadie, Leo sustains a minor gash on his arm. The family is advised to evacuate. April suggests going to her parents’ house. After April calls them, Leo receives a text from her mother, Deb Russo, telling them to stay with her and April’s father, Billy Russo. Leo, who has been sleeping in Otto’s room for weeks, reluctantly agrees. A police officer drives the family away. Leo and April avoid looking at each other, staring instead at their burning home.
In a flashback to 2011, a post-college April works as a tutor for Jonathan Gutierrez, a high school student with dyslexia. At the school, she has a brief, friendly encounter with a teacher named Leo Torres. During her session with Jonathan, he expresses his hope to be in Mr.
