The series that refused to endThe Off Campus series began in 2014 not as a planned franchise but as a private experiment. Kennedy had no contract, no audience expectation, and no sequel in mind when she sat down with the characters who would eventually fill five books.
I actually started The Deal in 2014 as a ‘just-for-fun’ book I wrote for myself. Being Canadian, hockey is a way of life, so I incorporated that and a college setting and next thing you know the Briar boys were created!

That accumulation of commitment is what eventually made The Legacy inevitable.
I just… started writing. The Deal started as a book-for-fun, and as characters developed, I decided I wanted to write books for all of them.
The path to The Legacy ran through a plan that never happened. Kennedy originally intended to end the series at three books, and she had a structural shock ready for the finale: a death that would have permanently foreclosed any continuation.
Well, I wanted it to be a trilogy, to be honest, and I wanted there to be — spoiler alert — a big impactful death for Dean.
Her editor’s intervention saved Tucker’s life and added a fourth main book to the series. That editorial refusal also kept the world open long enough for The Legacy to become possible.
I love seeing a reformed Playboy character. So I wanted to shatter his world, and it was gonna be originally with Tucker, and my editor was like, ‘Absolutely not. We love him so much.’ There’s no way you can write a series without Tucker getting a book.
Tucker stayed, got his own book in The Goal, and the series reached a scale that made a closing ensemble piece the only logical next move.
How she wrote it
A novella collection built on borrowed partsThe Legacy is structured as four novellas, one per couple, totaling roughly 85,000 words. One of those novellas had already been published before the collection existed. Rather than write entirely new material for that slot, Kennedy folded a previously released standalone into the book.
The Pact is now located inside The Legacy. It’s Logan and Grace’s novella.
Readers who had already found The Pact as a standalone encountered familiar territory; everyone coming to The Legacy first got it as part of the whole.
The collection’s scope was shaped by a clear sense of finality. Kennedy knew what she was building toward, and that knowledge set the ceiling on how much the Briar universe could still expand.
Right now The Legacy is the last planned book to take place in the Briar universe, but I have 2 other series coming up that will have a Briar U feel.
The subject matter of The Legacy required a different kind of storytelling than the main Off Campus books. College life has its own pressures, but the series’ four couples in The Legacy face careers, distance, marriage, and unplanned pregnancies. The official book description, published through Kennedy’s own imprint EKI, names the emotional logic directly.

What she wants us to sit with
Joy and the cost of goodbyeKennedy’s attachment to Off Campus is not the detached pride an author might feel toward an early work they have since outgrown. Returning to it for the TV adaptation years after The Legacy came out, she described the experience in a way that collapses the distance between her 2014 self and her present one.
I have a soft spot for this series because it was my first foray into younger characters, like college age. So it’s always going to be a nostalgic thing. My feelings for it haven’t really changed. It’s not like they’ve evolved in a different way. It’s almost like this series, whenever I revisit it, it gives me that same joy, and it’s just such a fun world to be in.
Closing a long series requires a writer to hold two feelings at once: the relief of finishing and the grief of leaving. Kennedy named both without resolving the tension between them.
It’s a bittersweet feeling. Sometimes I feel ready to move on to a new idea, especially if the series is a long one. But those characters always stick with me and sometimes I’ll go back and re-read certain books.
The Legacy is the document that lets Kennedy close the door on Briar without locking it. The characters are finished, but she can still visit.
Among the Off Campus characters, one held a particular grip on Kennedy’s imagination, and his presence in The Legacy carries weight she has described in personal terms. The question of which character she favored most had a clear answer by the time the series was complete.
I always used to say I was #TeamGarrett, but I think Dean’s taken the top spot. There’s something about his cocky vulnerability mixed with his humor that just takes the cake. Plus, it never hurts to have a little eye candy on your arm.
