The Liar

The fourth installment in the Eddie Flynn legal thriller series opens in August 2002, when Julie Rosen, a young mother struggling with crack cocaine addiction, discovers a masked stranger dressed in black standing over her infant daughter's cot in a room reeking of gasoline. The intruder strikes Julie, and she loses consciousness. She wakes to the house engulfed in fire, unable to reach her baby. Firefighters pull her out, but a severe head injury shatters her memory.

Years later, in New York City, Eddie Flynn, a criminal defense attorney and former con artist, receives a late-night call from Leonard Howell, a former associate of Eddie's father who runs a security firm specializing in kidnap and ransom retrieval. Howell's seventeen-year-old daughter, Caroline, has been missing for nineteen days. Eddie, whose own daughter was once abducted by the Russian mob, agrees to meet him. While waiting for Howell's car, Eddie is served with a subpoena for files on someone named Julie Rosen and cons the process server into revealing the attorney behind it: Max Copeland, a lawyer who destroys defense attorneys through appeals alleging ineffective counsel. On the drive to Howell's estate, Eddie speaks with Judge Harry Ford, his mentor, who confirms he once represented Julie at a murder trial. Julie was convicted of killing her infant daughter, Emily, by burning down their house. Harry believed Julie was innocent and fears Copeland's appeal will target him.

At Howell's mansion in Premier Point, a gated community in New Rochelle, FBI agents and SWAT teams prepare for a ransom exchange. Eddie meets Special Agent Harper and her partner, Special Agent Joe Washington. Howell explains he received two ransom demands: one through the FBI for two million dollars, with a drop at a train station, and a private demand for ten million with proof-of-life photographs of Caroline. The station drop, Howell insists, is a decoy. He wants Eddie as his attorney because he plans to seize the ten-million-dollar ransom from the insurance bondsman, substitute his own two million, and deliver the real ransom himself. Eddie agrees.

Eddie proposes a safer approach: a suitcase switch inspired by three-card monte. Using pickpocketing skills learned from his father, he steals a handcuff key from Lynch, the FBI's Special Agent in Charge, during a bumpy car ride and swaps the ransom cases. Howell, his associate McAuley, and his bodyguard Marlon Black head to Sleepy Hollow Cemetery for the real exchange while Eddie waits at a roadside truck stop, where Harper is monitoring the train station feed.

They watch Lynch follow instructions to a locker containing a cell phone and a bloodstained shirt bearing the message "Howell murdered her in the basement." Howell, at the cemetery, dials the first of two phone numbers left at his drop site. The call connects to the locker phone, and Lynch answers. The second number triggers an explosive device, and Howell's mansion erupts in flames. Eddie and Harper race to the burning house, where they help rescue Susan Howell, Leonard's second wife, and George, Howell's driver, who uses a leg brace.

Structural engineers later discover bloodstains in the collapsed basement. A field test matches Caroline's blood type, and a kitchen knife bearing blood and Howell's fingerprints is recovered. The FBI arrests Howell for Caroline's murder. He attempts suicide with a concealed pistol, but Eddie tackles him. Eddie remains convinced of Howell's innocence.

Six months later, Howell's trial opens. Assistant District Attorney (ADA) Michelle King presents damaging evidence: Howell was roughly ten million dollars in debt, and cell phone data places him in Virginia near where Caroline's car was found. Eddie exposes prosecution witness Susan's financial motives, revealing she stands to gain far more in her divorce if Howell is convicted. He also discredits the prosecution's blood pattern expert, Doctor Dallas Birch, by revealing that Birch's credentials came from a diploma mill and that he never trained at the FBI academy.

The trial shifts dramatically when George, called to testify, removes his leg brace, stands straight, speaks without a stutter, and announces his real name is Scott Barker. During an earlier courtroom outburst, Howell pickpocketed a razor-sharp ceramic tie pin from Eddie's jacket. Eddie had carried the pin as a ruse, showing it to the suicidal Howell to convince him to stay alive through the trial. Eddie and Harper pursue the prison transport van at high speed and stop it just in time. Howell has slashed his wrists and throat. Paramedics save him, and he falls into a coma.

Back in court, Barker produces a photograph and video of Caroline alive in a concrete pit. He announces he is holding her captive: Unless Howell confesses "his sins" within twelve hours, she will be killed. The judge continues proceedings in secret. When agents raid Barker's apartment, a hidden accomplice opens fire, shooting Washington in the chest. Another agent dies when a sabotaged fire escape collapses beneath him. The FBI declares Caroline dead and abandons the search.

Eddie and Harry piece together the truth. They theorize that Barker was Emily Rosen's father and Julie's former lover. Before Julie died in an asylum in 2011, Barker visited her after a letter triggered her suppressed memories of the fire. He then spent years infiltrating Howell's household under the alias George Vindico: "George" evokes Saint George the dragon slayer, and "Vindico" is Latin for "revenge." Barker orchestrated the kidnapping to force Howell through the same ordeal Julie endured, believing Howell was the masked intruder who killed Emily.

When Howell wakes from his coma, he identifies Barker as Julie's violent ex-boyfriend and reveals that his first wife, Rebecca, was Julie's sister. Eddie examines Rebecca's medical records and discovers no pregnancy history. He confronts Barker on the stand with the truth: Rebecca could not conceive naturally and faked her pregnancy while Howell was deployed in Afghanistan. She paid Julie to surrender her baby. When Julie refused, Rebecca dressed in black, entered Julie's house with a spare key, attacked her, placed a dead infant's corpse in the cot, stole Emily, and set the fire. Emily Rosen became Caroline Howell. The masked intruder was Rebecca.

Barker, shattered, reveals Caroline's location: a tomb in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, guarded by Marlon, who will execute her at 7:00 a.m. Eddie, Harper, and a tactical team fly by helicopter to the cemetery. Marlon opens fire, killing Lynch. Harper shoots Marlon dead. Inside the tomb they find Caroline alive.

Eddie manipulates Copeland into facilitating Barker's recorded confession by lying that Caroline died before they could reach her. Barker, consumed with guilt, cooperates fully. Eddie leverages the confession to force Copeland to sign an affidavit exonerating Harry before having Copeland arrested for conspiracy. He also confronts Susan with evidence of her complicity in the ransom scheme, forcing her to sign a divorce settlement before Harper arrests her. Harper quits the FBI, planning to join the medically retired Washington in a private investigations firm.

Three days later, Eddie and Harry bring Caroline, weak but recovering, to Howell's hospital room. Father and daughter embrace. Eddie reflects on the lies he told and the lines he crossed but does not regret the outcome. Watching a father hold his daughter on the street outside, he contemplates his next move as a new case beckons.
