Witness 8 is a novel in Steve Cavanagh's Eddie Flynn series that functions as a standalone thriller. The story follows two parallel narratives: Ruby Johnson, a manipulative young woman who witnesses a murder and exploits it for her own ends, and Eddie Flynn, a former con artist turned defense attorney who must save an innocent man while dodging a contract on his own life.

Ruby is a 22-year-old babysitter, maid, and cleaner for wealthy families on Manhattan's Upper West Side. Her family once lived on West 74th Street among these same residents, but her father Josef's gambling and alcohol addictions destroyed their finances, and he violently abused Ruby's mother for years. Ruby now lives in a small apartment with her ailing mother, Ava, who is dying of cancer. Ruby's grandmother always sensed something was fundamentally wrong with Ruby, and Ruby agrees: She lacks normal emotional responses and harbors dark, calculating instincts beneath a sweet exterior.

One night, walking home from a babysitting shift, Ruby watches through a window as a man she recognizes as a fellow resident of the street shoots and kills Margaret "Maggs" Blakemore. Maggs had been having affairs with two neighbors: Todd Ellis, a billionaire banker, and Brett Bale, a wealthy tennis-camp owner suspected of drowning his previous wife. The killer dumps the gun and returns to a neighborhood party. Ruby retrieves the weapon, feeling not horror but excitement. She has been searching for a solution to a crisis that has consumed her for months.

Ruby works as a nanny for John and Alison Jackson, whose home on West 74th Street was once her childhood home. Hidden behind a stud wall in the hallway, beneath a painting of a red-robed priest, lies the body of her father. Ruby killed Josef years ago with a knife to end his abuse of her mother, and together they concealed his corpse inside the wall. Alison has scheduled construction work that would uncover the body, so Ruby needs the family gone.

To frame John Jackson, Ruby drugs his seven-year-old son, Tomas, with sedatives and presses the murder weapon into the sleeping child's hand, transferring his palm print and DNA onto the grip. Because a child inherits roughly half a parent's DNA, the partial genetic profile implicates the father rather than the son. Ruby plants the gun in John's closet and makes an anonymous call to police.

John, a pediatric brain surgeon who insists he has never touched a gun, is arrested for first-degree murder. His civil attorney, Al Parish, brings the case to Eddie Flynn's small Tribeca law firm. Eddie practices with his partner Kate Brooks, and the team includes Harry Ford, a retired judge who serves as Eddie's mentor and closest friend; Bloch, the firm's investigator; and Gabriel Lake, a freelance private investigator. They only represent clients they believe are innocent, and they take the case.

Ruby intensifies her campaign to drive the Jacksons out. She orchestrates a neighborhood petition, spray-paints "MURDERER" on their front door, steals Alison's priceless heirloom necklace and throws it in the Hudson River, and frames the family's maid, Althea, for theft. When Alison's mother, Esther Hanson, grows suspicious of Ruby, Ruby kills Esther and frames Althea for the murder. Ruby also blackmails both Ellis and Bale, demanding $250,000 each for her silence about Maggs's killing. Both men pay. She uses part of the money to place Ava in a nursing facility. Throughout these events, Ruby is tormented by a whispering voice she associates with the painting of the red priest, which hangs over Josef's hidden grave.

Eddie faces his own deadly threat. After he humiliates Sergeant Ben Gray in court with a bluff involving fake evidence, Gray's boss, Mick Buchanan, who leads a criminal organization of corrupt NYPD officers called "New York's Finest," places a $50,000 bounty on Eddie's life. Eddie's childhood friend Jimmy Fellini, head of New York's Italian crime families, ensures no local crews accept the contract, but outside killers arrive, including a sniper known as Angel and an elegant professional hitman called Mr. Christmas.

The forensic evidence against Jackson is damning: Ballistics confirm the gun fired the fatal rounds, and DNA on the grip matches Jackson. Harry, however, notices a crucial anomaly. The DNA was extracted from a partial palm print that does not match Jackson's palm. The team investigates Ellis and Bale as alternative suspects, discovering that both received blackmail letters and that a hidden cell phone in Blakemore's bedroom contains a threatening text she sent hours before her death.

Tragedy strikes when Angel shoots Harry outside a hotel. Harry had stepped in front of Eddie, taking the bullet in his stomach. Emergency surgery saves his life, but he falls into a coma lasting weeks.

At trial, Kate delivers the defense opening, emphasizing the absence of any motive connecting Jackson to Blakemore. District Attorney Rob Castro ambushes them with a last-minute motion for an anonymous eyewitness. Eddie cross-examines the lead detective, exposing the investigation's failures and introducing Margaret's secret phone. Kate dismantles the prosecution's ballistics expert by revealing he always testifies in favor of whoever pays him.

Outside the courtroom, Eddie executes several schemes. He meets Mr. Christmas in a hidden speakeasy and arranges for the hitman's bag of blackmail cash to be swapped for a decoy filled with photocopied paper. When Mr. Christmas delivers the fake bag to Ellis, Ellis's reaction provokes the hitman into killing him. Bale, meanwhile, kidnaps Ruby after tracking her as his blackmailer, but Mr. Christmas follows and shoots Bale dead on the highway.

Eddie connects the final pieces when he notices Tomas's handprint art on the Jacksons' refrigerator. At trial, Kate overlays the child's painted handprint with the latent print from the gun, and the fingerprint expert confirms they match. The DNA expert admits that a child's partial genetic profile could produce the result attributed to Jackson.

Ruby, the anonymous witness Castro planned to call, takes the stand, waives her anonymity, and tells the truth. She testifies that she saw Bale kill Margaret Blakemore, retrieved the gun, drugged Tomas to transfer his DNA, planted the weapon, and made the anonymous call. She confesses to killing Esther and framing Althea, and reveals that she needed the Jacksons gone because construction would have uncovered Josef's body behind the stud wall. She insists her mother knew nothing, a lie designed to protect Ava; in reality, her mother helped conceal the body. Ruby's guilty plea secures her mother's immunity.

Jackson is acquitted. Eddie uses photographs of Castro sitting beside Gray, money planted in Gray's home, and his con-artist instincts to convince Buchanan that Gray is a traitor. Buchanan calls off the contract. Lake kills Angel in a clock tower Eddie arranged as a trap. When a neo-Nazi crew ambushes Eddie afterward, Bloch and Lake arrive and kill the attackers.

Eddie races to the hospital after receiving a voicemail he fears means Harry is dying. Instead, he finds Harry sitting up, awake, and demanding bourbon. The team reunites around his bed.

In an epilogue, Ruby, now serving a life sentence, calls Mr. Christmas's colleague from prison and references two Brando films about prison breaks. Mr. Christmas books a flight to New York.
