The Plea

The novel opens on the evening of Saint Patrick's Day. Eddie Flynn, the narrator, a former con man turned criminal defense attorney, stands in a darkened Manhattan conference room surrounded by dead bodies, holding an empty gun. A shadowy figure aims a pistol at his chest. Eddie reflects that this moment became inevitable 48 hours earlier, and the narrative flashes back to Sunday night.

Eddie, broke and sleeping in his one-man law office on West Forty-sixth Street, discovers intruders and attacks them, only to find FBI Special Agent Bill Kennedy and Lester Dell, a CIA operative running a joint federal task force. Dell explains that the law firm Harland and Sinton operates the largest money-laundering scheme ever conducted on U.S. soil, cleaning billions for drug cartels and terrorists. Dell's key informant, a corrupt banker named Farooq, was killed by the firm during a convoy ambush that also killed Dell's analyst and lover, Sophie Blanc.

Dell coerces Eddie with a devastating threat: Eddie's estranged wife, Christine, an attorney at the firm, unwittingly signed a document on her first day that implicates her in dozens of federal racketeering charges. Dell wants Eddie to represent David Child, a 22-year-old tech billionaire arrested for murdering his girlfriend, Clara Reece. Eddie must persuade David to plead guilty and cooperate against the firm. In return, Christine will be spared prosecution.

On Monday morning, Eddie executes a "bullet con," a rapid high-stakes scheme. He arranges a staged car accident to delay David's current lawyer, Gerry Sinton, a named partner at the firm. In the holding cells, Eddie uses Popo, a paid informant, to befriend David and positions himself as indispensable. David, terrified, begs Eddie to represent him and insists he did not kill Clara. Eddie outmaneuvers Sinton before Judge Knox to secure the lead defense role. While Eddie is in chambers, a prisoner attempts to stab David; Popo intervenes and is critically wounded. Eddie concludes the attack was ordered by the firm and secures David's bail.

The prosecution evidence is formidable: security footage showing only David and Clara entering his apartment, with only David leaving; a Ruger pistol found in David's car after a traffic accident; and gunshot residue (GSR) covering David's hands, face, and clothes. Clara was shot repeatedly in the back of the head. Eddie notices discrepancies in the GSR results but cannot yet explain them.

Eddie secretly copies Dell's classified file and learns how David's technology is exploited. David designed an anti-hacker security algorithm that, when triggered, disperses all client funds into thousands of small transactions below the $10,000 reporting threshold mandated by the Bank Secrecy Act, a federal law requiring banks to report large transactions. The money then pools into a single clean account. Dell reveals that Sinton activated the algorithm after David's arrest, meaning the laundered money will land the following evening.

Eddie tells David the full truth about Dell's coercion and the firm's operation. David appreciates Eddie's honesty but reveals he cannot access the algorithm remotely; it must be traced from within the firm's offices. Meanwhile, Eddie discovers the firm has ordered a hit on Christine after spotting Gill, the firm's head of security, and a mysterious man with a tattoo of Edvard Munch's The Scream on his neck watching him at the courthouse. Eddie pickpockets Gill's phone, finds messages ordering the hit, guides Christine through a harrowing escape, and sends her into hiding with their daughter Amy.

A breakthrough comes when Eddie recognizes the driver who hit David's car as Perry Lake, a professional driver Eddie once worked with. The accident was staged. The Lizard, a former marine and hit man who works for Eddie's old friend Jimmy the Hat, mentions laying out his weapons in an "exploded view," triggering Eddie's insight. Eddie finds an obscure French forensic paper proving that air bag deployment residue is nearly identical to GSR. Whoever framed David engineered the crash so the air bags would coat him in material an expert would mistake for GSR.

At the first preliminary hearing, Eddie destroys the prosecution's GSR expert by introducing this research. District Attorney Michael Zader retaliates by having Judge Knox recused on a technicality. David provides a USB drive containing software to trace the algorithm, but it must run from inside the firm's system. Eddie orchestrates a con, recruiting Boo, a former sex worker and expert con artist, to pose as a CBS television producer to provide cover while David hacks the firm's network at their offices in the Lightner Building. The group narrowly escapes, and David downloads the trace data.

Eddie negotiates with Dell at an airport, exchanging the USB drive and password for Christine's safe passage on a private jet. Dell betrays him: The envelope meant to contain David's immunity agreement is empty, and Zader refuses any deal.

Investigating David's apartment with Kennedy, Eddie discovers bloodstains and a bullet ricochet mark in a panic room the police never searched. Hidden camera footage reveals the apartment door handle moved after David left, proving someone was still alive inside. Perry Lake confirms that Bernard Langhiemer, a rival tech mogul, paid him to stage the crash. The only other person to access the French air bag study attended an Interpol conference under the name Sarah Callan, whose photo matches Clara Reece. Eddie realizes "Clara Reece" was a fabricated identity.

On Tuesday, Dell has Christine arrested and allows the firm to seize her from federal custody. Under immense pressure, Eddie conducts the second preliminary hearing before Judge Rollins, systematically demolishing the prosecution's case. He uses hidden camera footage, GPS records proving the arresting officer lied about his location, the panic room evidence, and the Interpol ID to show Clara Reece was a fabricated identity. Eddie argues the real killer created the persona, murdered a substitute victim whose face was obliterated to prevent identification, and framed David. Judge Rollins dismisses the charges.

Moments later, Treasury agents arrest David for stealing 7.9 billion dollars: The algorithm trace crashed after reporting that all funds diverted into an account in David's name before vanishing. At the Lightner Building, Kennedy calls Eddie with a revelation. Sarah Callan was an alias for Sophie Blanc, Dell's supposedly dead lover. Dell murders two agents and reveals the full conspiracy: He and Sophie orchestrated everything, including framing David, using Langhiemer, and creating the Clara Reece persona to infiltrate David's life. Dell, a former money mule laid off by the firm when David's algorithm replaced him, engineered the scheme to steal 8 billion dollars.

The mysterious tattooed man from the courthouse, now revealed as El Grito, a cartel hit man, arrives with a captured Sophie and demands the money. Eddie gives a prearranged signal, and the Lizard opens fire from a sniper position across the street. In the gun battle, Dell, El Grito, Sinton, Sophie, and several agents are killed. Eddie is wounded, and Kennedy shoots Sophie when she attempts to kill Eddie.

Six weeks later, the government suppresses the full story. The New York Times reports Eddie among the dead, a deception Kennedy arranges to protect Eddie's family. The real murder victim is identified as Samantha Harland, the 23-year-old daughter of the firm's other named partner, who was drugged and hidden in the panic room before being shot. The stolen money is never recovered. Eddie arranges for Popo to enter a rehabilitation facility funded by David and forces DA Zader to resign using sexual harassment evidence compiled by Senior ADA Miriam Sullivan, who is appointed acting district attorney. Christine suggests she and Eddie try again, but Eddie refuses, believing his work will always endanger his family. He resolves to continue practicing law alone.
