Chapter 1 Summary: “Chris”

Chris’s best friend, Mike, calls him early one morning, asking if he can take his girlfriend, Larissa, and her mother to the hospital for a scheduled surgery because Larissa’s car is in the shop. Mike was meant to drive them, but he’s hungover from drinking heavily the previous night.

Mike and Larissa’s relationship is relatively new, and Chris only met Larissa briefly at the concert where she met Mike, but he’s willing to do almost anything for his best friend. He drives up to Larissa’s dingy apartment, where she’s surprised to see Chris and not Mike. She remembers him from the concert and thanks him for the favor.

On the ride to the hospital, Larissa’s mother, Nancy, asks if Chris is single and argues a bit with Larissa. Sensing that Larissa is uncomfortable, Chris turns on a loud podcast for the remainder of the drive to prevent Nancy from talking.

At the hospital, Larissa insists that Chris doesn’t need to stay to drive them home, though Mike had asked him to. Chris feels bad about leaving her alone but sees that Nancy left her purse in the car and heads into the hospital to give it to her.

Chapter 2 Summary: “Larissa”

Larissa bursts into tears as soon as her mother is sent to the operating room, and it’s not the first time she’s cried that day. Larissa and her mother have been experiencing financial troubles: Nancy hasn’t been able to work, so Larissa takes every job she can, including gig work for various apps and delivery services, just to live paycheck to paycheck. Yesterday, Larissa discovered that her absent father used her social-security number to open credit cards in her name, leaving her unable to pay for the repairs that her car is getting.

Chris finds Larissa crying when he comes into the hospital, and she thinks again about how horrible she feels having asked for help from Mike, let alone a stranger. She questions her relationship with Mike but gives him the benefit of the doubt because Chris told her he couldn’t come because he had a migraine. Chris gives Larissa a tissue, and she notices how kind his eyes look. When she tells him that he can leave, Chris refuses to do so. He offers to take Larissa out to breakfast and jokes with her to lighten her mood. Larissa agrees to go with Chris to a bakery across the street but tells him that she has a nut allergy. He calls the bakery and confirms that none of their foods contain nuts, and he makes sure that Larissa has all precautionary medications before they leave.

Larissa isn’t hungry, but Chris has the idea to rank all the breads the bakery has to get her mind off of things. They talk about the night they met, when Larissa ended up barefoot and needing a ride home at a concert that Chris and his friends were at two months ago. She had to choose between getting a ride home from Mike or Chris, and she wonders if she made the right choice as Chris tells her things about Mike that she never knew. Larissa tells Chris about what happened with her father, wanting to blurt out what she has pent up. Chris tells her about how his mother died three months ago and how he hasn’t been doing well.

Larissa feels comfortable around Chris, who manages to get her to eat breakfast, something she knows she couldn’t have done on her own. Larissa suspects that Mike knew that Chris would be able to comfort her and that sending him was a thoughtful gesture.

Chapter 3 Summary: “Chris”

On the way back to the hospital, Chris and Larissa talk about their shared interest in books. Larissa invites him to borrow some from her when he drops her off. Larissa tells Chris that she thought he seemed crabby when they first met, which is why she rode home with Mike instead. Chris notices that the sweatshirt Larissa is wearing is one of his own, though she thought it was Mike’s since she found it in his car.

As they reach the parking lot, they hear a strange noise and see a small, filthy dog. Larissa immediately falls in love with the grey Yorkie, and Chris suggests that he can take it to his friend Xavier, who’s a vet, to get him checked out.

Suddenly, Mike pulls up to the hospital and tells Larissa that he’s feeling better, thanking Chris for the favor. Before Mike can leave, Chris asks him to repay the favor by getting Larissa’s car out of the shop—an expensive favor that Mike begrudgingly agrees to after Chris threatens to tell Larissa the truth about why he couldn’t come this morning.

Chris takes the Yorkie to Xavier, who’s in town for a few weeks after moving to California with his wife. He doesn’t find a microchip and mentions that all the local shelters are full, so he suggests that Chris take the dog in himself. Xavier asks how Chris is doing, and Chris feels somewhat lighter for the first time in months.

Larissa texts Chris, asking him to come over to see the dog and to give him back his sweatshirt, but Chris doesn’t feel close enough to her for that. He suggests that she come over the next time Mike does instead. A few days later, Mike and Larissa make their relationship official.

Chapter 4 Summary: “Larissa”

Larissa talks to a lawyer about her father’s identity theft but knows that she has little chance of getting things to work in her favor, so she must continue working hard to cover his debts and her own expenses. Since her mother’s surgery last week, she’s been texting Chris questions about Nancy’s medication since Chris is a pharmacist, but she hasn’t seen him.

She and Nancy talk about how Mike got her car out of the shop; Larissa wants to repay him, but Nancy thinks it’s a nice gesture that she should just appreciate. Nancy urges Larissa to work at a bar to make better tips, but Larissa doesn’t want to work with that crowd at that time or be like her mother.

Larissa’s friend Lexi comes over. Nancy tells them about how she’s dating a man named Phil, who’s often drunk and who borrowed money from her and took weeks to pay it back. Larissa learns that Nancy took Chris’s number from her phone and has been asking him questions, making Larissa uncomfortable.

Larissa feels somewhat uncomfortable around Mike’s friends, as they’re all much wealthier than she is. She hates asking them for favors, something that Nancy has no trouble with when she texts Chris to get his login for a streaming service.

Chapter 5 Summary: “Chris”

Chris has been feeling better since he adopted the dog, but he still thinks that he can’t keep him with his busy work life. Chris is waiting for Mike to get out of wisdom-tooth surgery with their friends Jesse and Xavier, and they make fun of his chipmunk cheeks as they take care of him.

Larissa texts Chris to ask how Mike is since Mike didn’t want her to see him after surgery. Through the anesthesia, Mike asks his friends if he thinks Larissa will marry him. Xavier and Jesse leave, but Chris stays to take care of Mike at his house. He thinks about how Larissa is very different from the other girls Mike has dated, but he sees why he likes her since she’s much more his type.

Chris is surprised when Larissa begins to unlock the door, and the Yorkie, whom Chris brought with him, immediately jumps on her. They talk about how Chris can’t keep the dog, and Larissa volunteers to take him part-time, calling the dog “Woofarine.”

Larissa stays to make Mike some soup, something she often makes in bulk and then sells to make some extra money. Chris and Larissa fall into natural conversation again, until Mike yells for Chris, and they go to check on him. As they go back to making the soup, Chris tells Larissa about how Mike was in school and how kind he is.

They discuss books and their childhood crushes before Larissa’s throat starts to feel scratchy. She thinks it’s from peanut-butter residue on a sponge she used to wash the bowl for soup, and Chris looks after her. She mentions that she’s still paying off fees on the credit cards that her father took out in her name; she has filed a police report but doesn’t think it will go anywhere.

Larissa offers to go home and grab some of the books she offered to loan to Chris, but Mike comes out for food. Chris wants to go back to talking about books, but with Mike there, he knows it would feel weird. Feeling like a third wheel, Chris leaves with his dog.

Chapter 6 Summary: “Larissa”

Lexi picks Larissa up for work at Donna’s Diner and suggests that they should get “sugar daddies” to pay for her bills. As they talk about Mike, Lexi admits that she doesn’t think he’s the one for Larissa, even though she thinks he’s in love with her. Lexi asks about Chris and if he’s single, making Larissa think about how nice Chris is.

Chris sends Larissa pictures of Woofarine, and when she follows him on social media, she sees that much of his profile is pictures of the dog as well, making her realize how much Woofarine must impact his life.

Chapter 7 Summary: “Chris”

During a grueling day of work at the pharmacy, Mike and Larissa come through the drive-through with Woofarine and invite Chris to lunch. Chris’s co-worker Waylon points out how attractive Larissa is, and Chris agrees.

The cemetery where Chris’s mother is buried calls to tell him that they’ve finished carving her headstone, and Chris thinks about how this is the last thing he’ll ever do for his parents. He contemplates his mother’s death and wishes he could go back in time, now knowing what he knows about it.

Chapter 8 Summary: “Larissa”

Larissa and Mike have made plans to go for a walk with Woofarine, Chris, and Jesse, but at the appointed time, Mike hasn’t arrived and won’t answer his phone. When Chris arrives, he says that Jesse got a flat tire and can’t come. Chris and Larissa talk about how Woofarine, whom they’ve started calling “Woofie,” has been a bit destructive and rambunctious.

Mike finally calls Larissa back and mentions that he has another headache, so he won’t be coming, though he was the one who recommended a walk in this park. He advises Larissa and Chris to continue anyway and tells her that he doesn’t want her to check on him afterward.

Larissa asks Chris if he’s keeping Woofie, and he says that he will if she can still share “custody” with him. Larissa talks about all the odd gigs she does to make money, and Chris is impressed, especially with her ventures into cooking. Larissa is glad she came on the walk rather than working, especially since the others didn’t show up. She feels calmed by Chris’s presence.

Chapter 9 Summary: “Chris”

Chris and Larissa think that they’re about halfway through their walk, but they have gone much further than Mike said it would take. They realize that they’re in the middle of nowhere. Chris calls Mike, who Chris can tell is drunk. Mike had told them that it was an hour-and-a-half walk, but he had gone that long when he was running. Chris worries for Mike, who used to deal with anxiety in school by drinking heavily. Larissa and Chris agree to continue on their walk rather than going back since they’re having a good time.

The two of them banter about reality shows and Chris’s fear of deer, continuing to bond. As Larissa is asking about what happened to Chris’s mother, Woofie takes off after a snake he sees in the grass, biting it in half and causing blood to spew over himself and Larissa. Larissa tries to wash the blood off her white shirt in a stream, and Chris offers her his shirt so that she doesn’t have to wear something see-through. Now shirtless, Chris rejects Larissa’s offer to put sunblock on his back because Chris can’t let himself think of the idea of her touching him.

As they walk, they talk about their fathers and how Larissa hasn’t seen hers in years. Chris tells Larissa about how his mother died of liver failure after a few weeks in hospice, but he realizes that he isn’t as ready to talk about this as he thought he was.

A storm breaks overhead, and the three of them have to take shelter in an outhouse. Though they’re soaked, sunburned, and have over two hours of walking left, Chris thinks about how he wouldn’t change a thing about the day.

Chapter 10 Summary: “Larissa”

Larissa tells Lexi about her 11-mile hike and how chivalrous Chris was. Mike calls Larissa to talk about a trip they have in a few weeks, mentioning that he has to go up early but that he’s arranged for Larissa to carpool with Chris.

As he’s hanging up, Mike tells Larissa that he loves her for the first time, and she doesn’t know what to say, as she isn’t sure if she loves him after just four months of dating. Larissa only starts to feel better when Chris calls her to tell her about something Woofarine did.

Chapter 11 Summary: “Chris”

Chris wants to talk alone with Mike about his drinking when they go to the gym, but he sees that Jesse is in Mike’s car when he comes to pick Chris up. Mike talks about what he should get Larissa for her birthday next month, and Chris gives him a good suggestion for a custom jewelry box. When Jesse jokes about Mike and Larissa’s relationship, Chris can see that Mike is tense. When his friends suggest that he should start dating, Chris says he doesn’t want to.

Jesse leaves the workout early, and Mike tries to avoid Chris as he asks about him being drunk by noon on the day of the walk. Mike admits that he’s been having panic attacks for a few months and eventually tells Chris that he thinks everyone secretly hates him and doesn’t know why Larissa is with him. Mike confesses that his life hasn’t turned out like he wanted: He relies on his parents for a lot of his money and has stopped taking medication and seeing his therapist. Chris convinces Mike to fill his prescription at his pharmacy so that he can keep an eye on him and tells Mike that he’ll be around more for him.

Chapter 12 Summary: “Larissa”

Larissa is happy when Mike comes over unannounced to fix a leaky faucet in her apartment at her mother’s request. Mike is a part-time plumber at his stepfather’s business, but he works more often as a personal trainer, which he greatly prefers.

Larissa thinks about how different their lives are, especially since Mike grew up with money and she didn’t. Larissa feels embarrassed having Mike in her shabby apartment. Mike apologizes for putting Larissa on the spot when he told her he loved her.

Nancy wheedles Mike into taking her and Larissa to a fancy restaurant, and Larissa feels bad for having him take her to an expensive place. Larissa gets the cheapest thing on the menu, while Nancy doesn’t hold back on ordering appetizers. When Mike goes to pay the bill, his credit card gets declined.

Chapter 13 Summary: “Chris”

Chris wakes up to a call from Mike, asking to borrow $300 after his card declined at the fancy restaurant. Chris arrives to see Mike drinking alone at the bar after telling Larissa and Nancy that his credit card was just acting up.

Chris loans Mike the money and insists that he take him home when Mike says he’s had four drinks. Mike says that he can drive, though he’s visibly drunk. When Chris tries to grab his keys in the parking lot, Mike pushes him before running off in the direction of his house.

Chapter 14 Summary: “Chris”

Jesse calls Chris to tell him that he’s picking up Mike, but Chris is too irritated to tell him what happened. Chris thinks about Larissa and worries that she knows why Mike’s card declined. Mike comes to see Chris the next day to apologize. Chris berates him for thinking he’s the center of the world when he also has his own problems.

Chris drives Mike back to his car, where Mike promises that he’ll do better, including getting back on his medication. When Mike finally asks how Chris is doing, Chris doesn’t want to tell him, thinking about all the other times Mike hadn’t been there for him when he needed someone.

Chapters 1-14 Analysis

From the earliest chapters of the novel, Chris and Mike are set apart from each other and established as foils, and this becomes central to the plot. Just like Larissa’s choice at the concert two months before the beginning of the story, Larissa is often presented with two very different options in her romantic life, introducing the key theme of The Courage to Choose an Unfamiliar Path. Mike, whom Larissa has been seeing only for a few weeks at the beginning of the novel, often hides himself, and Larissa finds out many things about him—such as his career as a plumber and the sports he played in high school—from Chris. Mike also hides much more significant aspects of his life, such as his drinking and his finances, which Chris often enables him to get away with.

Mike is always willing to ask for help, as he does with Chris right at the onset of the novel, which creates a tense dynamic between the two friends since Chris feels overly responsible for Mike’s choices and behavior. Mike tries to avoid Chris when he wants to talk about his drinking and has to be cornered into the conversation, foreshadowing how his drinking will continue to strain his relationships with both Chris and Larissa as the narrative unfolds. By contrast, Chris is always willing to offer others help, even when it makes their relationships messy. Though he blurs the line between friend and doctor when he sets up guidelines for Mike’s recovery in Chapter 11, Chris is willing to tell Mike the ugly truth that no one else will about his drinking. This is a recurring event throughout the novel, as Chris will often tell Mike when he’s messing up his relationship with Larissa.

Chris’s acts of service become a key motif in the novel, which highlights Loyalty as an Ethical Principle, as Chris feels responsible for behaving in a loyal and caring manner toward his friends. Chris and Larissa’s relationship is built on acts of service, from the way he takes her out to breakfast or checks to see if her EpiPen hasn’t expired after only having spoken to her for a few moments. Chris and Mike’s relationship is similar, with the novel starting with Chris doing a favor for Mike and then using the favor Mike owes him to help Larissa. Even when he’s angry at Mike, such as when Mike shoves him after Chris loans him money at the restaurant, Chris still makes sure that Mike gets home safely with Jesse.

While these acts of care show Chris’s loyalty and thoughtfulness, his behavior also sometimes blurs the lines between care for others and infantilizing them. In constantly covering for Mike and making excuses for him, Chris inadvertently makes it easier for Mike’s destructive behavior to continue unchecked. In a similar way, his interference in Mike and Larissa’s relationship in trying to shield Larissa from Mike’s behavior means that Larissa is often unable to get to know Mike in an authentic way for herself. The novel’s characterization of Chris thus suggests that, while care and loyalty are essential for strong friendships, loyalty that isn’t tempered with self-awareness and boundaries can have unintended consequences for all involved.

The theme of Economic Precarity Shaping One’s Sense of Agency is clear from the beginning of the novel, as Larissa’s troubled finances impact her daily life. Chris sees this right away when he goes to pick her up at her dingy apartment. She reveals that her father has put her in debt and interfered with her taxes and credit, and she admits that her mother hasn’t been able to work. Other people in Larissa’s life notice this as well, with Lexi suggesting more than once that they should get “sugar daddies” to pay for their expenses, but this reminds Larissa too much of how her mother has depended on men for money.

Nancy acts this way around Mike as well, assuming that he’s independently rich when his parents pay for most of his expenses. Mike has his own problems with economic precarity, though he has much more of a safety net than Larissa. Larissa often thinks about the economic differences between herself and Mike, such as when she sees the fancy hand soap in his bathroom and later discovers that it’s “a forty-three-dollar bottle from Neiman Marcus” (104). She compares this to a day of tips at the diner, showing how she feels like she can’t stop working or put anything at risk the way Mike can.
