Chapter 15 Summary: “Larissa”

Larissa is looking forward to a break at Mike’s family cabin, feeling exhausted from her various jobs and everything else she’s living with. Nancy tells Larissa about how her boyfriend, Phil, has talked about living together, but Larissa doesn’t want Phil to come to their apartment, let alone live with them.

Chris is on his way to pick Larissa up, and she thinks about how she has seen him more than Mike lately.

Chapter 16 Summary: “Chris”

When Chris pulls up to Larissa’s apartment, she and Nancy see that he has a giant penis drawn on his face with a permanent marker. He reveals that he has just come from a children’s vaccine clinic where there was a face painter, and he let a scheming little girl paint his face with what he thought was temporary face paint. Though Larissa laughs at him, Chris still gives her a drink that he brought her and offers to get her luggage.

After seeing the jewelry box that he suggested Mike get for Larissa in her room, Chris thinks about how he hasn’t seen Mike much lately because he’s been working. He hasn’t filled his prescription at Chris’s pharmacy, but Mike claimed that he couldn’t get a doctor’s appointment to get one for a few weeks.

Chris tells Larissa about all the problems he has at work. Mike calls while Chris is getting gas. Chris advises Mike to clear all the nuts out of the cabin, and Chris notices that he’s been drinking. Larissa helps Chris get the marker off his face and gives him a rare copy of a book they both love since she knew Chris wouldn’t let her pay for gas. When they arrive at the cabin, they both see that Mike is acting a little aggressively. When Chris goes into the pantry, he sees that Mike hasn’t cleaned out any of the nuts in the cabin.

Chapter 17 Summary: “Larissa”

Larissa thinks about how she has never seen Mike drunk before and how he’s a little loud and annoying. Larissa puts on her bathing suit but thinks about how she’d feel self-conscious in front of Chris with just a bikini on. She runs into Chris as he’s taking out the trash and offers to take it out for him. The bag opens and spills out when she goes to pick up something, and she sees that the only thing in the trash is products with nuts.

Chapter 18 Summary: “Larissa”

Larissa hangs out with Jesse’s girlfriend, Becca, and Xavier’s wife, Samantha, at the lake outside of the cabin. Larissa convinces the other women to float out further since Mike is doing cannonballs, and Larissa wonders how much he’s had to drink. She sees Chris also looking annoyed with Mike and thinks about how he went through the pantry to throw out the nuts for her. Larissa thinks about how she’ll be driving home with Mike but would prefer to be going with Chris.

Chapter 19 Summary: “Larissa”

When Larissa gets home from the cabin, she sees that Phil is in the apartment and assumes that he’s been there the whole time. The apartment smells like beer and cigarette smoke, and Larissa confronts Nancy about the suitcases she sees in her room. Larissa puts her foot down since she pays half the rent. When Nancy points out that she could get a place of her own, Larissa recounts the numerous financial issues preventing her from doing that.

Nancy suggests that Larissa stay with Mike for the weekend, and Larissa admits that spending so much time with him was overstimulating. She notices that she liked the parts of the weekend that she spent with Chris, not Mike, and feels bad about the thought. She thinks about what it would be like to ask Chris to stay in his guest room but ultimately decides to go to Mike’s.

Chapter 20 Summary: “Chris”

Chris wakes up from a nightmare, but not the recurring one he usually has of his mother on her deathbed. In the nightmare, Larissa eats nuts, neither of them has an EpiPen on them, and Chris feels as helpless as he did with his mother.

Over the weekend at the cabin, Chris realized how much thinking about Larissa has consumed his life, even though it’s not his job to worry about her so much.

Chapter 21 Summary: “Larissa”

Mike takes Larissa to his cousin’s luau-themed engagement party, where Larissa can’t eat anything because of nut contamination. Mike doesn’t eat either, and he tells Larissa about how he’s reading the book that she and Chris love.

Mike is training for a triathlon, so he hasn’t been drinking, and Larissa has been staying with him because Phil has moved into the apartment. Larissa talks with Becca but feels like she can’t open up to her like she does to Chris. When Larissa mentions doing a quick gig on the way back from the party, Mike suggests that she just move in with him so that he can pay all her bills. Larissa wants to make her own money, unlike her mother, so that she doesn’t have to rely on anyone.

Chapter 22 Summary: “Chris”

Chris finally arrives at the party and sees that both he and Larissa have bought Hawaiian shirts printed with Woofarine’s face on them. Larissa and Chris talk about the food spread, and Chris asks her if she ever thought about catering.

Larissa is disappointed when she sees that Mike has gotten a drink, though he promises it’s his last one since he’s driving. Larissa wants to do karaoke with Mike, but he insists that Chris do it instead. All the songs they have to pick from are love songs, but Chris can’t explain to Larissa why they can’t do one of those. When they’re singing, Chris sees that Mike is at the bar getting another drink.

Chapter 23 Summary: “Larissa”

Larissa is annoyed that Mike has had three drinks when he had already promised to drive, so she hangs out with Chris. Larissa wonders why Chris didn’t bring a date to the party but feels weird after thinking about him like that.

Chapter 24 Summary: “Chris”

Chris goes to find some food that’s safe for Larissa to eat from the chef, as Mike is still at the bar. He’s mad that Mike didn’t think to tell the host about Larissa’s allergy or get them something to eat beforehand.

When Larissa can’t see him, Jesse finds Chris to tell him that Mike is disastrously drunk and that they need to take him home now. Jesse agrees to take Mike home if Chris can take Larissa, and Chris feels angry at Mike for potentially putting Larissa in danger.

Chris tells Larissa, who has the keys to Mike’s car, but when she volunteers to go with him, Chris insists that she doesn’t. As Chris drives her home, they listen to each other’s music in peace, and Chris wonders if this would have happened if he had driven her home the night of the concert. He stops to let Larissa do a quick gig, and once that’s done, he insists on helping her do more to make some extra money for herself.

Chapter 25 Summary: “Larissa”

Chris and Larissa drive around doing work and talk about how they both have problems with their jobs. Larissa mentions how Mike’s mother, Donna, who is also Larissa’s employer, has been cold to her since they started dating.

The night of the concert comes up in conversation, and Larissa mentions that she’s surprised he didn’t try to flirt with her, but Chris mentions that he did try to and wanted to drive her home. Chris tries to shut down the conversation. Larissa eventually changes the subject, but she continues to think about how Chris was interested in her the night they met. She remembers that she thought Chris would want someone better than her and thought Mike would suit her better. She also thought that Mike’s exuberant personality eclipsed Chris entirely.

Chris tells Larissa that his mother’s alcohol addiction led to her death, something he has never told any of his friends, including Mike. Chris feels ashamed to not have noticed her addiction, wishing he could have told her about it, but Larissa tells him that most people with addictions don’t change when another person asks them—they have to get better for themselves. Larissa assures him that his mother’s death wasn’t his fault, and she realizes how much this affects him, noticing how they’re becoming more than just casual friends.

They sit in a parking lot discussing this, and Larissa wants to hug him but doesn’t know if they’re close enough to do that yet. Suddenly, Larissa sees something moving in the fence and thinks an animal is stuck.

Chapter 26 Summary: “Chris”

Larissa gets out of the car to help a baby deer that’s stuck in a fence, not remembering Chris’s fear of deer. As they’re trying to get the fawn out of the fence, they see the deer’s mother, who Chris thinks is angry. Larissa sees that Chris is genuinely terrified and tells him to wait in the car, but he refuses to leave her.

They get the baby deer out of the fence, but as they head to the car, the deer begins to charge at them. Chris gets in front of Larissa and creates a diversion so that she can get in the car, and they drive away laughing. They go to a diner afterward, where Larissa brings up Mike. Chris feels bad because he’s starting to realize that he has feelings for Larissa.

Chapter 27 Summary: “Larissa”

When Larissa gets home, she tells her mother about what Chris told her about the night of the concert. Nancy asks her if she could go back in time, knowing what she knows, if she would have chosen Mike or Chris. When Larissa doesn’t immediately say Mike, Nancy can tell that Larissa is hesitant about her boyfriend, though both know that Chris won’t go near her, given her relationship with his best friend.

Chapter 28 Summary: “Chris”

The next morning, Chris comes to drop off some pastry-making supplies for Larissa, keeping in mind what they had talked about when they saw the catering the previous night. Chris thinks about all the other things he wants to do for Larissa but knows that he can’t. He thinks about the night of the concert and knows that Larissa would have chosen him if he had been nicer that night. Larissa thanks Chris and asks what his mother’s name was since she forgot to last night.

Chris goes over to Mike’s house, but Mike doesn’t answer the door when he knocks. Mike is asleep, hungover, at 11 o’clock and asks Chris to text Larissa not to come over. Chris lectures Mike about how Larissa is only still with him because she didn’t see how drunk he got last night and assures Mike that he knows her because they actually talk and he doesn’t hide the truth as Mike does. Chris thinks about how Mike is wasting his shot with Larissa, which makes him feel worse because he thinks only one of them can have a chance with her. Chris knows that Mike is making an effort, but only when he isn’t drinking. Mike tells Chris that he could see himself marrying Larissa, and Chris pictures how painful it would be to be the best man at that wedding.

Chapters 15-28 Analysis

Larissa and Chris’s relationship starts to grow into something more than friendship, which complicates their feelings around Loyalty as an Ethical Principle. Larissa notes how she “ke[eps] coming back to” to Chris’s thoughtful actions toward her (163), such as removing the nuts from the cabin, while Chris admits to himself that he has feelings for Larissa. They also become more emotionally dependent on one another: Larissa confides in Chris about her financial struggles, while Chris shares his grief over his mother’s death and his lingering sense of guilt. All these factors draw the characters closer together, implying their compatibility and foreshadowing their eventual relationship at the novel’s end.

Despite noticing their growing attraction to one another, both feel reluctant to act upon their feelings because they both wish to remain loyal to Mike. Larissa feels conflicted about realizing that she would rather spend time with Chris than Mike and even considers asking to move into Chris’s guest room before ultimately moving in with Mike, not wanting to jeopardize the relationship. Chris, meanwhile, continues to spend time with Larissa but also tries to place his loyalty to Mike above his developing feelings. While he admits that the growing seriousness of Mike’s feelings is hard on him, he continues trying to help Mike make healthier choices and avoids having Larissa gain too much exposure to Mike’s worsening drinking habits.

Drinking alcohol comes up frequently in this section, and it often has negative consequences. Mike’s drinking at the cabin starts to open Larissa’s eyes to his true nature. Though she waves the incident off while they’re on vacation, she can’t unsee how unstable he is around alcohol after this. Mike’s drinking at the party is even more of a concern, leading Chris to tell Mike that Larissa would have broken up with him if she saw how he acted at the party. Mike’s drinking pushes Larissa and Chris closer together, not only because they’re both concerned for him but because Mike’s actions often leave Chris feeling responsible for taking care of Larissa.

Larissa’s mother’s relationship with Phil foreshadows Larissa’s relationship with Mike, though this is exactly what Larissa is hoping to avoid. Larissa’s inability to see the flaws in her own relationship speaks to her ongoing struggles with The Courage to Choose an Unfamiliar Path. While Larissa is upset that her mother is with someone unreliable like Phil, she doesn’t realize that Mike is also unreliable and not fully emotionally available either. She also disapproves of how her mother depends on men financially but nevertheless moves in with Mike when she can’t afford an apartment of her own. The way that Larissa’s dynamic with Mike mirrors her mother’s dynamic with Phil thus suggests that people can recreate detrimental patterns in relationships because they unconsciously choose what is familiar.

Larissa also struggles with realizing that Chris would have been the better fit for her but remains reluctant to take a chance by ending things with Mike. While Mike continues to show stronger feelings for her—even mentioning the possibility of marriage to Chris in this section—Larissa remains largely ambivalent and passive in their dynamic. All of Larissa’s uncertainties foreshadow tumult in her relationship with Mike, while continuing to suggest that she would be better off with Chris.
