Chapter 37 Summary: “Ryan”

The narrative moves four days ahead. After losing to Sacramento, Ryan attends a press conference. He’s exhausted from a red-eye flight and from fielding questions about playoff elimination and trade rumors. Ron watches the conference from the back of the room. Ryan knows he must win the next two games to stay in Chicago near Indy, Stevie, and Zanders. At home, he sees a text from Indy saying she’s out on an errand and has exciting news to share. While taking off his shoes, he discovers a positive pregnancy test under the entryway bench.

Chapter 38 Summary: “Indy”

Indy returns home with coffee, excited to tell Ryan her parents are visiting. She finds him on the entryway bench looking distraught. He confronts her with a pregnancy test, and Indy sees fear in his expression. Ryan begins to ask if she did it on purpose but stops himself. Hurt, Indy demands he ask the question directly. He tries to explain he is exhausted and not thinking clearly, but Indy tells him she isn’t pregnant and that his reaction proves he doesn’t want the same future she does. Feeling betrayed by his distrust, she grabs her keys and leaves.

Chapter 39 Summary: “Ryan”

Ryan paces his apartment, regretting his reaction. He wants a family with Indy but was thrown off by the unexpected discovery. For a moment, he had a flashback of Marissa falsely claiming to be pregnant with his child. Before he can go find Indy, Stevie bursts in and reveals the test is hers. Ryan feels momentary disappointment that Indy is not pregnant, then joy for Stevie, who has not yet told Zanders. Flooded with regret, he remembers Indy denied the pregnancy. Stevie warns Ryan that if he doesn’t truly want the same future as Indy, he must let her go. Ryan insists he does and has already taken steps Indy does not know about to secure their future. Stevie says she knows where Indy is but needs to speak with her before he does.

Chapter 40 Summary: “Indy”

A heartbroken Indy stays at her Rio’s house. When Stevie arrives, Indy describes Ryan’s terrified reaction to the pregnancy test and asks Stevie to look after him. When she asks if Stevie is really pregnant, Stevie confirms it, and they share a happy, tearful moment. Later, Ryan comes to the door, but Rio turns him away at Indy’s request. He leaves a duffel bag of her belongings with a note inside her book saying he loves her and intends to give her the life she wants.

The next morning, Rio tells Indy that Ryan slept in his car outside his house all night. Indy goes out and Ryan begs her to come home. She says she can’t because she’s afraid his words are empty promises given his reaction to the test and that she needs more time alone to think. They kiss before she goes back inside.

Chapter 41 Summary: “Indy”

Indy goes to her fertility clinic appointment alone, questioning whether she still wants to proceed without Ryan. The receptionist informs her that her insurance doesn’t cover the treatment but that someone paid for it in full in mid-December, right after she told Ryan about her condition.

Back at Rio’s, the hockey player tells Indy that he’s arranged an apartment showing for her with his broker, Cindy. Cindy drives Indy 30 minutes outside the city to a large farmhouse. Indy insists the property is outside her budget, but Cindy ushers her inside and slips away. Indy finds Ryan in the kitchen cooking breakfast. He tells her she brought him back to life and that he wants the future she desires. He reveals he bought the house in January and shows her the deed listing both their names. Ryan also explains he paid for her fertility treatments because he wants her family to be his, too. He asks her to stay and then gives her some privacy to think.

Chapter 42 Summary: “Indy”

Overwhelmed by Ryan’s loving actions, Indy tours the house. Four bedrooms compose the second floor, and her own belongings are already set up in the primary bedroom that takes up the entire third floor. Sitting on the back porch, she feels at peace and realizes she is home. Stevie arrives in Indy’s car and joins her, and they envision raising their families side by side. Indy says they’re “doing this forever” and asks for Stevie’s help with a plan.

Chapter 43 Summary: “Ryan”

As Ryan leaves the apartment building for a press conference, David mentions that movers took Indy’s belongings. Ryan explains that he bought the couple a house outside the city, and David encourages him to seek a peaceful future for the two of them. At the press conference before the final regular-season game, Ryan gives an uncharacteristically candid speech. He admits to feeling intense pressure for years and says the game has become fun again this season.

Afterward, Ron praises his honesty, saying that Ryan is now the leader he always wanted him to be. Ryan asks if he’s being traded, and Ron says no. Ryan then confesses that his relationship with Indy started as fake dating to convince Ron he had softened. Ron laughs, revealing Caroline suspected the scheme all along. He says that, regardless of how things started, Ryan became the man he was pretending to be.

Chapter 44 Summary: “Ryan”

The Devils win, securing their first playoff spot in six years. Ryan spots Indy in the stands, but she is gone by the time he reaches the family waiting room. He returns to his apartment to find it completely empty and drives to the new house, where he finds it fully decorated. Indy presents him with a playful new lease that entails rent paid in daily declarations of love and only one rule—to live their happiest lives together.

They reconcile and make love. Afterward, the doorbell rings, and Indy reveals that she planned a surprise party with Ryan’s teammates, their friends, the Morgans, and her parents. Ryan communicates with Indy’s father in ASL, and Tim gives him a sign name combining the ASL sign for “protect” with the letter R. Ryan plans to ask Tim’s blessing to marry Indy that night. He sits on the porch with Indy, surrounded by loved ones, feeling utterly happy.

Bonus Chapter Summary: “Ryan”

The narrative moves forward a year. After the spring banquet, Ryan and Indy, who are now married, await the results from their last embryo transfer. To distract a stressed Indy, Ryan takes her to the empty United Center to play one-on-one basketball. Indy makes up her own rules as they play, and Ryan jokes about their future child’s athleticism. He reassures her they will be okay regardless of the transfer’s outcome. Indy asks him to close his eyes. When he opens them, she’s holding a positive pregnancy test. Indy explains that she tested the night before and had it confirmed by a doctor that morning. She went by herself because she didn’t want him to hear bad news at the clinic. Overcome with joy, they agree the winner of their game gets naming rights. Ryan reveals he has already chosen Iverson for a boy and Navy for a girl.

Epilogue Summary: “Indy”

Four years later, Indy is at the United Center with their two-year-olds, Navy Renee and Iverson. Navy is adopted, and Iverson, their biological child, was born three months after Navy. Indy and Ryan are raising their children as twins. Their fertility journey was difficult. The first embryo transfer failed. While they were pursuing adoption, they successfully transferred their last embryo, and they were matched with Navy’s birth mother shortly after learning Indy was pregnant.

Ryan has won two MVP titles, and the Devils won their first championship the year before. The Ryan Shay Foundation has grown into a year-round organization funding school libraries, basketball courts, and meal programs for children. At the United Center, Indy, Navy, Iverson, Stevie, Zanders, Stevie and Zanders’ daughter Taylor, and Rio gather in their family box. Before his game, Ryan shares a tender moment with his children and a loving exchange with Indy. Watching him happy and surrounded by loved ones, Indy feels her life is even better than she ever dreamed.

Chapter 37-Epilogue Analysis

In the novel’s final section, Ryan integrates his professional image with his personal life, resolving The Conflict Between Public Persona and Private Authenticity. Throughout the novel, Ryan strictly separates these spheres. This division collapses during a press conference following a difficult loss. Instead of offering his usual sterile soundbites, Ryan openly admits to his struggles with depression, telling the media, “I feel the pressure every fucking day, but this season, for the first time in a long time, the game has been fun again” (408). By exposing his vulnerabilities in an arena usually reserved for performative stoicism, Ryan dismantles the emotional defenses he erected after Marissa’s betrayal. This public admission mirrors his private decision to fully commit to Indy, showing that his healing requires honesty in all areas of his life.

Ryan’s emotional integration is structurally paralleled by the transition from his downtown apartment to the farmhouse. Initially, the minimalist apartment serves as a physical manifestation of Ryan’s self-imposed isolation and deep-seated paranoia regarding his privacy. Following the pregnancy test misunderstanding, Ryan chooses to abandon this fortress, moving to the house he secretly purchased in January. Unlike the tightly controlled apartment, the house features ample space, a garden, and a deed bearing both of their names. Indy immediately transforms the space by adding throw pillows, artwork, and a new dining table, signifying the infusion of life into Ryan’s barren world. His movement from a sterile, solitary refuge to a vibrant, shared home underscores the importance of his partnership with Indy to his recovery.

The climax emphasizes Indy’s journey toward self-advocacy, confirming her growth beyond her initial codependency. When Ryan panics upon discovering the pregnancy test, Indy immediately leaves. Rather than downplaying her reaction to comfort him, she refuses to compromise her future or apologize for her desires: “[T]hank you for reminding me that the last thing you want in life is the thing I desire most” (376). Her actions in this scene contrast with the way she repeatedly diminished her own needs during her relationship with Alex. Her willingness to walk away from Ryan demonstrates a newfound internal stability; she refuses to accept a partner who views her dream of motherhood as a trap. This autonomy is rewarded when she learns Ryan proactively paid for her fertility treatments months prior, proving he actively champions her desires. Indy’s steadfast commitment to her own boundaries fulfills the goals of her bucket list tasks. Her character arc establishes that a healthy romantic partnership requires individuals to first possess a strong, uncompromising sense of self.

The conclusion of the central fake-dating arrangement reveals how performance can spark authentic growth. When Ryan confesses to Ron that his relationship with Indy began as a strategic ruse, Ron dismisses the deception, noting that regardless of the arrangement’s origins, Ryan evolved into the empathetic leader he was pretending to be. The pretense provided a necessary framework for Ryan to safely practice emotional availability while simultaneously offering Indy a secure environment to process her recent heartbreak. This narrative trajectory satisfies the fundamental conventions of the fake dating trope, demonstrating how forced proximity and staged intimacy compel guarded characters to dismantle their defensive posturing.

The novel’s resolution solidifies its stance on kinship, arguing that family is forged through deliberate effort and advancing The Redefinition of Family Through Found Connections. Ryan’s dedication to learning ASL to communicate with Indy’s deaf father demonstrates active investment in her. During a celebration, Ryan successfully signs with Tim, who grants him a unique sign name combining the ASL gesture for “protect” with the letter “R.” The epilogue reinforces this concept through the couple’s children. Tomforde presents Iverson and Navy as equally important to Indy and Ryan’s realized dream of parenthood, emphasizing that love transcends genetic links. Surrounded by teammates, friends, and their growing family, the main characters prove that lasting bonds are built through intentional acts of devotion.
