Chapter 23 Summary: “Indy”

The morning after her and Ryan’s sexual encounter on the couch, Indy wakes up sick and hurt that he left immediately afterward. She worries that she romanticized what was just physical release for him. Despite her illness, she goes to Maggie’s bridal shower, which she meticulously planned to impress her old friends after feeling excluded from the group since her breakup.

Stevie arrives to help and insists that Indy go home when she sees how sick she is. Indy refuses, insisting that the party needs to be perfect. During the shower, Maggie defends Alex’s cheating, pressures Indy to reconcile with him, and questions whether her relationship with Ryan is real. Indy realizes her loyalty now belongs to Ryan.

Ryan suddenly appears, having skipped practice after Stevie called him to say that Indy is sick. He carries her home, puts her in his bed, makes her soup, and later brushes and braids her hair. When she asks why he left her on the couch the previous night, he apologizes and admits he struggles with being casual around her because traumatic feelings from his past overwhelm him at times. They postpone the conversation about his history, and Indy realizes she wants to give her real self to Ryan.
