Plot Summary

On Nantucket Island, novelist Madeline King and her best friend, Grace Pancik, begin the spring facing different forms of dissatisfaction. Madeline is paralyzed by writer’s block, facing a looming deadline and mounting financial pressure, while Grace feels unfulfilled in her marriage to driven real estate agent Eddie Pancik. To occupy herself, Grace begins an ambitious landscaping project at their Wauwinet home with the help of the charismatic landscape architect, Benton Coe. Eddie, meanwhile, is financially overextended by his investment in three speculative houses and faces pressure from Madeline to return the money she and her money invested with him. The lives of their teenage children are equally intertwined: Madeline’s son, Brick, is in a long-term relationship with Grace’s beautiful but restless daughter, Allegra, while Allegra’s studious twin, Hope, secretly harbors feelings for Brick.

Hoping that a change of environment will help her writing, Madeline rents a small apartment in town as a writing studio. The decision inadvertently starts a rumor when a local painter sees Eddie visit the apartment and mentions it to someone else. Through a series of misunderstandings and retellings, island residents begin to believe that Madeline and Eddie are having an affair. At the same time, a real affair begins between Grace and Benton. They acknowledge their attraction to each other, begin kissing secretly, and eventually have sex in Grace’s garden shed. Grace confides the details of the relationship to Madeline, who warns her about the possible consequences but remains her confidante.

Meanwhile, Eddie’s financial problems become more serious. Unable to pay his bills or complete the spec houses, he accepts an earlier proposition from a wealthy client to arrange paid sexual encounters with women from the cleaning crew he employs. Eddie and his sister and business partner, Barbie, begin taking a portion of the payments themselves and expand the illegal operation to other clients. Eddie hides both the scheme and the severity of his financial problems from Grace, even as unpaid bills accumulate and one of race’s checks to the yacht club bounces.

The Panciks’ twins become involved in deceptions of their own. Allegra has secretly begun seeing an older college student, Ian Coburn, while continuing to date Brick, and Hope reluctantly provides cover for her sister even though she wants Brick for herself. After Brick discovers the affair, rumors briefly circulate that he and Hope are involved instead. Later, a police officer, Curran Brancato, catches Allegra and Ian together and photographs them in their underwear. He sends the image to his sister, Hollis, Allegra’s best friend, who circulates it among their classmates. The photograph exposes Allegra’s infidelity, ends her relationship with Brick, and leaves her socially isolated.

As summer progresses, the rumors intensify and the characters’ lives become dangerously entangled. Madeline’s husband, Trevor, a pilot for a local airline, eventually hears the rumor about her alleged affair from a coworker and confronts her. The resulting fight leads to a temporary separation, with Trevor asking Madeline to stay in her apartment while he processes the accusation. Simultaneously, Madeline, unable to get her $50,000 investment back from a cash-strapped Eddie, channels her desperation into a new novel. She begins writing a book titled B/G, using the intimate details of Grace’s escalating affair with Benton that Grace has shared in confidence. Grace, falling deeply in love, takes Benton as her date to the exclusive Sunset Soiree, where their obvious intimacy fuels more speculation. Tensions between Madeline and Grace also erupt after Allegra hurts Brick, and years of unspoken resentment contribute to a serious rupture in their friendship.

Grace becomes increasingly careless about concealing her relationship with Benton. When Grace’s garden is photographed by the Boston Globe, she appears alongside Benton in several intimate poses. The article intensifies the island’s speculation about them, eventually leading Eddie to believe them. He comes home unexpectedly and finds Grace and Benton together in the locked garden shed. Without a direct confrontation, he fires Benton and orders him off the property, implicitly threatening him. A terrified Benton ends the affair, dismissing their romance and making plans to flee the island for a job in Detroit. Later, in a private meeting, Eddie confesses to Benton that he threatened him out of love for Grace but also gives his blessing for them to be together if Grace chooses.

Meanwhile, the FBI, alerted to Eddie’s illegal activities by his secretary, Eloise, and the owner of the rental house, orchestrates a sting operation. Eddie is arrested by an undercover agent posing as a client. Grace bails him out and finally learns the full extent of their financial ruin and his criminal enterprise, which included trafficking a minor into sex work. Shaken by the destructive power of gossip and her own ethical breach, Madeline calls her editor and pulls B/G from publication, despite threats of legal action.

In the aftermath, the characters must rebuild their lives. Eddie pleads guilty to sex trafficking and other charges to protect his sister and accomplice, Barbie, and receives a three-to-five-year prison sentence. Before he leaves, he makes a heartfelt apology to his daughters, who respond with unexpected love and support. Barbie, free from prosecution, accepts a job and a marriage proposal from rival realtor Glenn Daley. Heartbroken by Benton but resolved to stand by her husband, Grace sells their beloved Wauwinet home. With the proceeds, she settles their debts, including repaying Madeline and Trevor, and moves with the twins into a smaller cottage in town. Madeline and Grace reconcile, their friendship restored.

Freed from the burden of her secret manuscript, Madeline finds new inspiration and finally begins to write a new novel. Allegra, humbled and ostracized, gets a volunteer job at the library and starts to mature, forming a genuine bond with Hope. As the Panciks and Llewellyns adjust to their changed lives, Nantucket’s collective narrator turns its attention toward whatever story will become the island’s next rumor.
