Kira called Sin, and Sin and Corbin went to the party, finding Elli passed out in a bathroom with Kira. They took her out of the house, and Elli and Kira’s classmates speculated that Elli took drugs and had sex with multiple men. Sin wants to help Elli however he can. He realizes that the wedding will be their first public appearance together.

Ellington

Elli remembers finding her father after he died by suicide when she was 12 years old. Elli notes that her mother decided to hold the wedding reception in the same place where her father died. Elli lights some decorations on fire with a candle. She thinks about how her mother replaced her father, resolving to do something destructive.

Chapter 30 Summary: “Sin”

Sin says he will help her burn down the house if she wants him to. They find their table in the reception hall, and Sin can see that Elli is high. She drinks champagne from a bottle.

Sin spots Kira and Corbin entering with Sin’s parents. Sin has not spoken to Corbin since discovering his relationship with Kira. All four sit with Elli and Sin, and another Lord, Chance Beckham, sits with them. Chance grew up with Jayce, Corbin, and Sin, but Sin is not close to him. Chance’s presence makes Elli tense, but Elli will not tell Sin what is wrong. Laura and Lincoln enter the room, and everyone applauds.

Ellington

Elli remembers how Chance Beckham brought her to her bedroom after James and Lincoln sexually assaulted her. He implied that he would be with Elli one day, but Elli does not understand why he is at the wedding reception. Elli is not surprised that Sin and Corbin know him. When Laura and Lincoln give their speech, Elli recalls how Sin’s mother has always been more of a mother to her than Laura. Laura spent a lot of time out of town, and she did not care for Elli after Nicholas died. When Laura is speaking, Elli laughs, drawing everyone’s attention to her. She exposes how Laura was assigned James and then Lincoln, each of whom are less powerful than Nicholas was. An arm suddenly grabs Elli and pulls her away.

Chapter 31 Summary: “Sin”

Laura drags Elli out of the room, followed by Lincoln and Sin. Lincoln tries to stop Sin, who punches Lincoln in the face. Laura chastises Elli, who claims her mother never cared about her. Laura claims that Elli tricked James into molesting her and urges Elli to consider suicide, referencing Nicholas’s death. Chance enters but stays away. Elli is hurt and Laura leaves, telling Sin to take Elli away. Chance steps toward Elli, but Sin threatens him.

Sin brings Elli to his house. They have sex, and Sin reaffirms that he loves Elli. He says he will never lie to her, even though he will hurt her during sex, and he will always love her.

Chapter 32 Summary: “Sin”

Sin grabs some things from the house of Lords and sees that Matt is covered in bruises. Gunner and Chase report that Ryat beat Matt up on their assignment; Sin assumes it is a fight over chosen Ladies. Chance complains that his chosen, who was a gift from a family with less power than his own, only cries and hates being with him. Another man comments on Sin’s decision to be with Elli instead of Amelia, and Sin can see that Chance is jealous. Sin goes to his room, someone knocks on the door, and Sin tells them to leave. The person offers to help Sin, showing him something on his phone that surprises Sin. Sin agrees to hear their offer.

Ellington

Sin wakes Elli and tells her to get dressed. She feels terrible, and he gives her some painkillers. Sin makes her wear a blindfold and drives her to a secluded house. Sin brings her in, and she finds a note saying it is their home. Sin bought the house for them and asks her to move in with him. She agrees, and Sin performs oral sex on her in the dining room.

Chapter 33 Summary: “Sin”

Sin wakes up when the doorbell rings, and he tells Elli to get dressed. A man called Mr. Tate greets Sin at the door and hands Sin a packet of papers to sign. Elli joins them. Sin tells her to sign the papers, as well, saying they are the documents for purchasing the house. Sin and Mr. Tate exchange glances, and Sin ignores a text that says, “See you tomorrow” (282).

Ellington

Elli wakes up, and Sin tells her he is going to take care of some business. She gets a call from Kira, who wants to go out on a couples date with Corbin and Sin. Elli agrees and goes back to sleep. Sin enters hours later looking upset, but he is glad to see Elli. They have sex.

Chapter 34 Summary: “Sin”

Sin tells Elli to be ready in 30 minutes, threatening to drag her out of the house if she does not get ready in time. Elli is excited, and they have sex. Sin does not want to go out with Corbin and Kira, but he already agreed to go.

Ellington

Elli and Sin meet Kira and Corbin at Blackout, and Elli is happy to see Kira. Sin and Corbin do not speak, and Sin tells Elli not to take any drugs. Inside, they have a few drinks, and Elli and Kira go to the bathroom. They run into Marcus, a known drug dealer, and he offers to sell them drugs. They refuse and enter the bathroom, where Amelia confronts them. Amelia shows Elli a video of her and Sin having sex in his room, revealing that all the bedrooms in the house of Lords have cameras. She claims that Corbin has been showing the Lords videos of him and Kira having sex. Amelia also accuses Elli of having sex with James and Lincoln, claiming Sin told her about Elli’s past.

Amelia leaves, and Elli feels betrayed. She tells Kira not to mention the encounter to Sin, and Kira reluctantly agrees. Kira gets Corbin and leaves, and Elli sees Amelia talking to Sin. Marcus offers Elli drugs again, and she decides to upset Sin.

Chapter 35 Summary: “Sin”

Amelia tries to seduce Sin, but he pushes her away. Amelia runs away crying, and Sin sees Elli with Marcus at the bar. Marcus is touching Elli’s back, and he gives her a bag of something. Elli walks away, and Sin approaches Marcus. Marcus says he is going home with the girl he was talking to, not realizing Elli is dating Sin. Sin agrees to join Marcus in having sex with Elli, but he plans to teach Marcus and Elli a lesson.

Ellington

Elli gets into Marcus’s car, noting that Sin probably went home with Amelia. Elli feels betrayed. Marcus brings Elli to his house, pours her a drink, and starts caressing her. She tries to convince herself that she does not care what people think, but she also tries to push Marcus away. Marcus handcuffs Elli, and Sin enters, surprising Elli.

Chapter 36 Summary: “Sin”

Sin asks Marcus if Elli took drugs, and he says she did. Marcus describes Elli as a “whore” who will let anyone have sex with her. Sin is upset that Elli planned to go home with Marcus, noting how Elli should know better than to trust men. Sin uses a knife to cut Elli’s tongue and forces her to perform oral sex on him. The door opens, Marcus demands a turn to assault Elli, and Sin throws a knife at him.

Ellington

Elli wakes up naked on the floor with Sin watching her. They are still in Marcus’s house, but Marcus is not around. Sin tells Elli to apologize, but she refuses. Sin brings her to another room, where Jayce and Corbin have tied Marcus to a chair. Marcus yells at Sin, and Sin tells Jayce to restrain Elli. Sin and Corbin torture Marcus with a blowtorch, burning both of his hands and forcing him to bite on a heated chain. Sin tells Jayce to release Elli, who apologizes. Sin tells Marcus that Elli belongs to him, making her the most important person in the world.

Chapter 37 Summary: “Sin”

Sin brings Elli to their home and puts her in bed. Tyson calls Sin and tells him to come back to Blackout. In Tyson’s office, Tyson reveals that a detective named Haynes is investigating Marcus’s death. Footage from security cameras at Blackout shows Sin, Elli, Corbin, and Kira arriving. Amelia enters the bathroom, followed by Kira and Elli. Amelia leaves looking happy, followed by Kira and Elli looking upset. Kira slaps Corbin and leaves, and Corbin follows her. Elli goes to Marcus then leaves, and Sin and Marcus leave as well. Tyson knows Sin killed Marcus, but Sin insists that the police will not find any evidence. Tyson assumes Sin is having sex with Amelia and Elli, and he tells Sin to alert him if something like this happens in the future. Sin agrees, and Ryat enters. Ryat is bruised and says he was on an assignment. Tyson wants Sin to hear about it. Sin is shocked by what they have to say, noting that he will owe Ryat a favor.

Chapter 38 Summary: “Sin”

Sin calls his father and tells him to make a call, ignoring his father’s attempts to give him advice. Elli has a packed bag and tells Sin she is leaving their home. He lets her out the door but tells her that she will not get far.

Ellington

Elli wonders if she intended to leave or if she wanted Sin to punish her, knowing that the punishment will mean he still wants her. Sin tells Elli to follow him, and he guides her through a hidden door that leads to a basement. Inside, there are various ropes and chains, and Sin binds Elli in an elaborate series of leather posts, chains, and belts. She accuses him of cheating on her, which he denies. He chastises her for leaving Blackout with Marcus, and asks if he should expect her to try to have sex with other men whenever she is mad. She claims that she hates him and spits on his face. Sin tells her he loves her then turns away.

Chapter 39 Summary: “Sin”

Sin uses multiple sex toys on Elli, including one modeled after his genitals. He tells Elli that his is the only penis she will interact with, and they have sex. Afterward, Sin begins tattooing something on Elli’s lower back.

Ellington

Elli wakes up sore and goes to the kitchen, finding Laura and Lincoln waiting for her. Laura reveals that she and Lincoln bought the house, not Sin, and they have picked a Lord for Elli to marry, meaning she will become a Lady. Elli refuses, saying that she is with Sin. Laura laughs at her, noting that Sin is marrying Amelia, whose mother sold Laura the house. Elli searches the house but finds Sin’s things missing. She is shocked, noting that Sin tattooed his name on her lower back.

Elli leaves and tries to call Sin, but he has her phone number blocked. Elli calls Kira, who is with Corbin at the house of Lords, and Elli drives there. Inside, she confronts Sin, who claims he never loved Elli, adding that no one will ever love Elli. Sin says that they were never going to be together. Sin hides Elli in his bathroom and leaves with Amelia. Kira and Corbin retrieve Elli. Corbin says that Sin and Amelia’s wedding has been planned to take place in three weeks, and advises Elli to move on.

Chapter 40 Summary: “Sin”

Amelia tries to get Sin to look over wedding preparations, but he gives her his credit card and says he does not care what they get. He watches the cameras in Corbin’s room, and sees Kira try to comfort Elli. Kira criticizes Corbin for telling Elli to move on, and Corbin pulls her into a kiss. Sin watches Elli wash her face. Kira enters, asking Elli if she thinks she might be pregnant. Elli ignores Kira and gets into bed.

Ellington

Elli has lunch with her mother, who seems uninterested. Elli wonders if she is pregnant, and she fantasizes that whichever Lord she is supposed to marry will call off the marriage when he finds out. Lincoln arrives with Chance, and Laura reveals that Chance is Lincoln’s nephew and the Lord they want her to marry.

Chapter 41 Summary: “Sin”

Sin meets Tyson, who brings him to a place called Carnage. On the way, Sin watches Elli on a camera. After the lunch, Sin watched Elli take a pregnancy test, see that it is negative, and drink a bottle of wine. Amelia calls to remind Sin that they are having dinner with her parents. At Carnage, Tyson tells Sin to be direct when they meet the Spade brothers. A butler brings them to a room, and three men enter. Sin demands to see their roster, saying that he is looking for someone. The brothers say that anyone on their list does not intend to leave.

Ellington

Elli continues to drink, recalling how lunch with Laura turned into a discussion of how Chance is going to control Elli’s life. Chance does not want Elli to work, and he implied that her role will only be to provide children. Elli wonders if her father was as upset by the world of the Lords society as she is. Elli wears Sin’s shirt, liking that it smells like him. Sin appears and starts caressing Elli, who tells him to leave. She mentions marrying Chance, but Sin is undeterred. Elli tries to leave, but Sin stops her. She resents that she is aroused by Sin’s behavior and grateful that he still wants her.

Chapters 29-41 Analysis

Chance is a secondary antagonist, like Lincoln. Chance’s involvement in James and Lincoln’s abuses of Elli cements his status as a lower-ranking Lord, as he is subservient to both of the older men. Chance does not try to hide his desire to hurt Elli. He is a foil to Sin, or a character who illuminates another character through contrasting qualities; his promise of pain is not accompanied by the love that Sin pairs with his threats. Chance’s presence at the wedding compounds tension, setting off a violent reaction from Elli.

This section continues to explore The Impact of Trauma on Attachment and Self-Image. Laura confirms Elli’s worst fears after dragging her out of the wedding reception. She acts as another antagonist by suggesting that Elli consider death by suicide: “Do us all a favor and get it over with.” Additionally, she makes the superficiality of her character clear, emphasizing that appearances are the only thing that matters to her: “Just don’t die in this house” (266).

Laura’s accusations heighten Elli’s already precarious self-image; for Elli they confirm that she is the problem, not her abusers. Further, Laura illustrates her internalized misogyny. Instead of acknowledging that her former husband abused Elli, she accuses Elli of seducing James: “You really think that I wasn’t aware that you were a whore who spread her legs for my husband?” (266). Laura’s words cause great harm, as the term “whore” is tangled with Elli’s self-perception. On one hand, Elli celebrates being a “whore” in the context of a trusting, caring relationship with Sin. On the other, James and others have used the term to degrade and devalue her. Elli comes away from this encounter shaken. This foreshadows the collapse of her relationship with Sin in the coming chapters. Sin’s decision to retract his love for Elli is part of a broader scheme, which Elli is not aware of. It has reverberating effects on Elli’s psyche.

Through Chance, the novel continues to explore Gendered Social Grooming and the Commodification of Women. In a conservative arrangement of binary gender roles, women are expected to produce children and raise them, but they are not allowed to do anything else. Meanwhile, men, such as Chance and Lincoln, have the privilege to do whatever they please. Elli asks: “Is this why my father committed suicide? Because he just saw no end in sight?” (360). Though Elli’s fate within Lords society is worse than that of her male counterparts, she is acknowledging how the Lords society is inescapable for all. Now that she is initiated into this world, there is no way for her to leave or fight back against the society’s power.
