Janet is Bryce's mother, a highly intelligent woman who previously attended MIT. She uses a wheelchair following a car accident eight years prior. She shares her darkroom and deep knowledge of photography with Maggie, fostering the young girl's newfound artistic talent.

Maggie's mother lives in Seattle and reacts poorly to her 16-year-old daughter's pregnancy. Viewing the situation with shame, she prioritizes social appearances over emotional support and arranges for Maggie to leave town quickly.

Maggie's father is a devout Catholic living in Seattle. Following the discovery of his teenage daughter's pregnancy, he collaborates with his wife to quickly send Maggie across the country to live with his sister Linda in North Carolina.

Morgan is Maggie's older sister. She remains in Seattle with their parents while Maggie is sent away to Ocracoke, maintaining a relatively distant relationship with her pregnant sibling.

Porter is Bryce's father, a military man whose career requires frequent travel and deployment. He works closely with Bryce to modify the family vehicle to accommodate his wife's wheelchair.

Trinity is a fellow artist who co-owns the Manhattan art gallery with Maggie Dawes.
