Part 1, Chapter 3 Summary: “Divine Action in the World: The Old Picture”

This chapter shifts from evolutionary theory to a second alleged conflict: whether the Christian belief that God acts in the world is compatible with modern science. The author begins by laying out the classical theistic view of God as a personal, omnipotent, omniscient, and wholly good being who created the universe from nothing (ex nihilo), continuously sustains it in existence (divine conservation), and governs it through both regular natural processes and occasional special acts. Thomas Aquinas goes further, arguing that God must actively cooperate in every individual cause-and-effect relationship in the natural world (divine concurrence). Special divine action includes miracles such as the parting of the Red Sea and the resurrection, as well as the internal work of the Holy Spirit to bring about faith—a concept shared by Aquinas and John Calvin.


Several 20th-century theologians find this position untenable, assuming the closed causal universe inherited from Enlightenment science explains all phenomena in the physical world. For instance, Rudolf Bultmann stated that history is a closed continuum of cause and effect, impenetrable to supernatural powers, and that modern technology is incompatible with belief in the miraculous. John Macquarrie agreed, arguing that science assumes all events have immanent, worldly explanations. Their shared position is what Plantinga calls “hands-off theology” (74): God creates and sustains the world but does not act specially within it. The author notes that roughly 40% of contemporary American scientists believe in a personal God who answers prayers.


The author then distinguishes two world pictures arising from classical physics. The Newtonian picture treats the universe as a machine governed by fixed laws. However, Newton himself believed in providential divine guidance and even divine adjustment of planetary orbits. Plantinga argues that the conservation laws of classical physics explicitly apply only to closed systems. Divine action by its very nature interrupts closed systems and is not subject to the same fixed laws. For instance, he contends that God could create a horse in Times Square without violating conservation of energy. The atheist philosopher John Mackie acknowledged as much, arguing that natural laws describe how the world works when it is left to itself. Formalizing this as (LN)—When the universe is causally closed, P (where P is the consequent of the law)—the author argues that God cannot logically violate a natural law, because any divine act means the law’s governing condition is never satisfied.


The Laplacean Picture (the idea that the universe is a completely deterministic system in which the future is fixed by the past and the laws of nature) is a philosophy that combines determinism and the causal closure of the physical universe. Plantinga asserts that Pierre Laplace’s philosophical concept drives hands-off theology, eliminating the possibility of both divine action and human free will. However, the Newtonian picture, lacking causal closure, leaves room for both divine and human free action. The author concludes that the real conflict is not between Christian belief and classical science but between Christian belief and the metaphysics of causal closure—a philosophical add-on to physics that carries no scientific credentials.

Part 1, Chapter 4 Summary: “The New Picture”

The chapter argues that quantum mechanics (QM), which superseded classical physics in the early 20th century, poses even fewer problems for special divine action than classical physics does. QM is fundamentally indeterministic: Rather than predicting a unique future state from initial conditions, the Schrödinger equation yields a wave function that, via Born’s Rule (a formula for deriving probabilities from that wave function), distributes probability across many possible outcomes. No hypothetically unlimited calculator could predict specific future states, undermining the Laplacean Picture entirely.


The author reports that expert opinion is divided on the compatibility of QM with the more dramatic miracles. Philosopher-physicists John Earman and Bradley Monton argue that events such as raising the dead or changing water into wine are not excluded by QM—merely highly improbable. Others, including philosopher Bas van Fraassen and physicist Katherine Brading, are skeptical. For the author, the ambiguity itself is significant: It is far from established that miracles violate quantum-mechanical law, especially since the same proviso from classical physics applies—QM’s laws describe causally closed systems.


Despite QM’s permissiveness, the Divine Action Project (DAP)—a major interdisciplinary conference series from 1988 to 2003 involving scholars including Arthur Peacocke, John Polkinghorne, Philip Clayton, and George Ellis—concluded that any credible account of divine action must be non-interventionist. The author identifies three objections to intervention advanced by DAP members. First, George Ellis raises the problem of evil: If God can intervene to raise Lazarus, why not to prevent “the evils of Auschwitz?” (100). Plantinga counters that demanding a rock-solid criterion for God’s choices is unreasonable; God’s reasons may simply exceed human understanding, much as Job could not comprehend his own suffering. Second, Ellis argues that fixed natural laws are a precondition for creatures to exercise free will and make rational decisions. Plantinga counters that free action requires sufficient regularity and predictability, not the total absence of divine intervention—a point illustrated by a rock-climbing scenario in which a climber can make rational risk assessments even while believing God occasionally intervenes to prevent fatal falls. Third, and most widely agreed upon among DAP members, is what the author calls “the divine consistency objection” (104): Paul Tillich, Ernan McMullin, and Philip Hefner argue that a God who establishes natural regularities and then overrides them is acting capriciously or inconsistently. Plantinga responds that such acts are only arbitrary if God lacks a good reason for them; in the case of the resurrection, marking Christ’s unique status is precisely such a reason. He also contrasts the DAP’s preferred image of God as a classical artist who prizes economy and restraint with the image of a hands-on God who delights in relentless creative engagement—and finds nothing in either image that compromises divine greatness.


The author then poses a more fundamental question: Under quantum mechanics, what does intervention even mean? The classical definition is an act that causes an event that breaks the laws of nature. Yet Plantinga argues this definition collapses under QM’s indeterminism, which predicts almost no specific outcomes. Based on that definition, every routine act of divine conservation would qualify as an intervention. Alternative formulations from the DAP—such as violating the laws or the created structures of order—fare no better in a quantum-mechanical context.


As a constructive alternative, the author revives a 1958 proposal by physicist William Pollard and develops it into the “divine collapse-causation” (DCC) model (116). Plantinga posits that, according to the Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) spontaneous collapse interpretation of quantum mechanics, quantum systems undergo regular, spontaneous collapses to specific states. No physical cause determines why a collapse settles on one particular outcome rather than another. The author proposes that God is the nonphysical cause of these specific outcomes. He also asserts that because God would be constantly acting in this way—not alternating between intervention and non-intervention—DCC sidesteps the inconsistency objection to divine action. By controlling microscopic collapse-outcomes, God could also guide macroscopic events, including evolutionary history. DCC further accommodates human free will: if humans are immaterial souls capable of causing quantum events in their own brains, God could cause some collapse outcomes while leaving others, thereby making free will a smaller-scale analog of divine action.


The author concedes that DCC is provisional and tied to a specific interpretation of quantum mechanics, which may be revised. He argues, however, that the “warrant” for believing in special divine action is theological, not scientific, and need not be abandoned every time scientific consensus shifts. 


Plantinga briefly addresses two further alleged conflicts between science and theism. He rejects the claim that science as a whole supports naturalism, since no scientific theory (QM, relativity, or evolution) entails the non-existence of God. He also rebuts John Worrall’s argument that science and religion differ irreconcilably in their epistemic styles—scientists being tentative, believers being dogmatic. Plantinga asserts that scientists are often neither tentative nor dispassionate, citing Werner Heisenberg’s account of the passionate Bohr-Schrödinger debates. He also states that many perceptual beliefs can be firmly held without the support of scientific evidence, particularly religious faith. Part 1 concludes that neither evolutionary theory nor classical or contemporary physics poses any genuine obstacle to belief in special divine action.

Part 1, Chapters 3-4 Analysis

These chapters establish the text’s central argument structure by presenting the apparent conflict between classical physics and divine action as a philosophical dispute rather than a scientific one. Plantinga argues that the idea that miracles violate natural laws stems from the Laplacean picture, which assumes a deterministic universe that is completely closed to outside forces. He contrasts this with the Newtonian picture, arguing that classical conservation laws are conditionally applied only to isolated systems. If God acts within the world, the system is no longer closed, so no physical law is technically broken. This semantic repositioning shifts the burden of proof: Rather than defending the plausibility of miracles against physics, Plantinga argues that secular thinkers must justify their assumption of universal causal closure, which he sees as an unscientific, metaphysical add-on. By redefining natural laws as descriptive only of closed systems, the text attempts to separate scientific data from philosophical naturalism. This approach establishes the methodological foundation for the book, arguing that believers unnecessarily cede theological ground when they mistake secular philosophy for empirical science.


Building on this foundation, the text challenges the semantics used by theological opponents, specifically targeting the pejorative framing of divine “intervention.” Plantinga critiques contemporary thinkers associated with the Divine Action Project (DAP), who argue that a God who occasionally intervenes acts capriciously or disrupts the conditions necessary for human free will. He challenges the coherence of this critique in light of quantum mechanics, arguing that the traditional definition of intervention collapses when the laws of physics do not entail specific outcomes. This linguistic critique exposes the assumptions of contemporary theologians who, in Plantinga’s view, needlessly adopt secular paradigms. However, critics frequently observe that Plantinga argues within a specifically Christian framework while presenting it as neutral philosophical reasoning. He justifies divine action by pointing to theological imperatives—such as God marking Christ’s unique status through the resurrection—creating an internal logic that fits traditional Christian orthodoxy but relies on premises that fall outside objective, neutral inquiry.


To explain how God could act without violating physical laws, the text conceptually appropriates quantum mechanics through the idea of “divine collapse-causation” (DCC). Drawing on the Ghirardi-Rimini-Weber (GRW) theory of spontaneous collapse, Plantinga posits that quantum systems regularly collapse and that God is the nonphysical cause of these specific outcomes. Because GRW identifies no physical mechanism that determines a specific quantum state, God’s continuous action in collapsing these states theoretically bypasses the problem of episodic “intervention.” By placing divine providence within the probabilistic uncertainty of the microscopic world, the text seeks to reconcile the regularity required for free will with the possibility of miracles. However, it is important to note that this argument operates outside established scientific consensus. Although Plantinga uses the language of physics to create logical space for miracles, DCC functions as a philosophical thought experiment rather than a testable hypothesis, prioritizing theological coherence over scientific verifiability.


Finally, the chapters establish a philosophical boundary that defends religious belief from demands for scientific proof. Plantinga rebuts the philosopher John Worrall’s assertion that religious believers are more dogmatic than scientists who are supposedly guided only by evidence. He notes that scientists are often anything but dispassionate, pointing out that Niels Bohr appeared to Werner Heisenberg “almost as an unrelenting fanatic” (123) during theoretical debates. More fundamentally, Plantinga argues that evaluating all beliefs by the standards of scientific hypotheses is an implausible normative standard. By categorizing religious belief alongside basic human faculties such as perception or mathematical intuition, he shields theological claims from the necessity of empirical justification. This aligns with his broader defense of religious epistemology, which categorizes belief in God as foundational rather than inferred from evidence. However, this line of argument attracts significant criticism from philosophers who argue that treating religious convictions as foundational truths immunizes them against contradictory evidence, highlighting a persistent methodological divide between naturalistic inquiry and theistic philosophy.
