Part 3, Chapter 7 Summary: “Fine-Tuning”

This chapter opens Plantinga’s case for science actively supporting theism by examining the fine-tuning argument (FTA). Astrophysicists since the late 1960s have observed that several fundamental physical constants—the strength of gravity, the weak and strong nuclear forces, and the universe’s rate of expansion—must fall within extraordinarily narrow ranges for life to exist. Cosmologist Paul Davies and physicist Stephen Hawking are among those who have noted these constraints. Robin Collins, in what Plantinga regards as the most technically rigorous treatment of the argument, identifies six well-supported cases of fine-tuning. Using a dial analogy, Plantinga estimates that the combined probability of all constants falling within life-permitting ranges purely by chance is less than 10⁻¹⁰⁰. He concludes that fine-tuning is unsurprising from a theistic perspective, since God would want life to exist and has the capacity to create the improbable environmental requirements for life. However, it is extremely improbable from an atheistic perspective.


Plantinga then examines four objections to the argument that fine-tuning suggests that life is created by design rather than chance. The anthropic objection argues that the fine-tuning of the universe does not require a designer, because observers can only find themselves in a universe capable of supporting life. The normalizability objection, raised by philosophers Lydia McGrew, Timothy McGrew, and Eric Vestrup, holds that infinite parameter ranges make the required probability space for creating life incoherent. Plantinga argues this theory is inconclusive, since it would equally undermine standard design arguments. The many-universes objection argues that a vast ensemble of universes would make fine-tuning unsurprising. Plantinga responds that while the fine-tuning of some universes becomes likely, this particular universe being fine-tuned remains improbable on atheism. The author also deems a sub-response—that this universe could not have had different parameters—epistemically implausible. Finally, both the Bayesian and likelihood versions of the FTA face severe difficulties in assigning the relevant probabilities. The chapter concludes that the FTA offers genuine but limited support for theism.

Part 3, Chapter 8 Summary: “Design Discourse”

Plantinga turns from cosmological to biological arguments for the world’s design, focusing on Michael Behe’s work. In Darwin’s Black Box (1996), Behe states that systems such as the bacterial flagellum, cilia, and the biochemistry of vision are “irreducibly complex”—meaning that removing any single component renders the entire system nonfunctional. Based on this observation, Behe claims that random mutation cannot account for such biological complexity, making a case for an intelligent guiding force behind evolution. Plantinga notes that Behe’s conclusions are not universally accepted. The philosopher Paul Draper argues that Behe does not prove that his examples fully satisfy the definition of irreducible complexity. Furthermore, Behe’s theory does not rule out indirect evolutionary pathways, in which a precursor system serving one function later acquires additional parts to serve a new function. 


Plantinga agrees that Behe’s case is not deductively airtight. For instance, in The Edge of Evolution (2007), Behe makes a quantitative argument based on the malaria parasite: Across more than 10²⁰ replication events under drug pressure, no novel protein-protein interactions arose, suggesting that assembling the complex protein machines inside cells by unguided selection is prohibitively improbable. At the same time, Plantinga contends that many critics of Behe fail to engage accurately with his actual claims. He contends that reviews by prominent evolutionary biologists such as Richard Dawkins and Jerry Coyne are often marked by ridicule of the notion of an “intelligent designer” of life rather than careful analysis. Plantinga acknowledges that some criticisms are more substantive, such as the possibility that Behe's evidence is drawn from atypical host-parasite systems or that complex biological structures could evolve through a series of individually advantageous intermediate steps. However, he maintains that these objections require further empirical investigation rather than dismissal.


Drawing on William Paley’s observations on the intricacy of design in the natural world, Plantinga suggests that perception alone may be a valid method of recognizing intelligent design. For instance, it is possible to identify a mountain goat on sight, without analyzing its characteristics or proving the point scientifically. Similarly, we instinctively perceive when another person is angry without consciously analyzing their facial expression and gestures. Plantinga argues that many beliefs—perceptual, memorial, social—are formed in this non-inferential “basic way” and carry significant warrant without requiring argumentative support. Darwin himself reportedly admitted to a strong perceptual impression of design in nature.


Within this model, Plantinga suggests that Behe is not primarily constructing proofs but directing attention to phenomena that trigger design perception. Such perceptual beliefs can be defeated—either rebutted (directly contradicted) or undercut (the basis for the belief is removed). However, Plantinga argues that evolutionary biology has done neither at the molecular level and provides only a weak, partial defeater at the level of gross anatomy. A theist’s prior belief acts as a defeater-deflector, preventing Darwinian considerations from dislodging the design belief. The chapter concludes that Behe’s design discourses offer genuine but difficult-to-quantify support for theism.

Part 3, Chapter 9 Summary: “Deep Concord: Christian Theism and the Deep Roots of Science”

In this chapter, Plantinga argues for a deep concord between Christian theism and science. He contends that Christian theism provides a framework within which the very success of science is intelligible, whereas naturalism cannot explain it. He observes that modern Western science arose exclusively within Christian culture and that its founders, from Copernicus to Newton to Boyle, were sincere believers. Plantinga cites the physicist C. F. von Weizsäcker’s description of science as “a legacy of Christianity” (266). He argues that Christian theism provides a natural explanation for several assumptions that underpin modern science.


First, the author points to the doctrine of the image of God (imago dei). Because God is rational and created humans in his image, there is a deep correspondence between our cognitive faculties and the structure of reality. We understand the world because our minds were designed to do so. Naturalism, by contrast, offers no explanation for this fit. 


Second, science relies on the assumption that nature is governed by laws. Plantinga contends that this expectation fits naturally with the Christian conviction that a rational God governs creation consistently. Drawing on the work of Alfred North Whitehead, he notes that medieval philosophers such as Thomas Aquinas emphasized God’s rationality and predictability, fostering the idea that the world would be governed by stable laws rather than by capricious divine whims.


Third, theism makes the necessity of natural laws intelligible: They cannot be violated by created beings, while remaining contingent on God’s free choice, and God is not bound by them himself. 


Fourth, Plantinga refers to the mathematician Eugene Wigner’s observation that mathematics is remarkably effective at describing the physical world. From a theistic view, mathematical objects such as numbers and sets can be understood as reflecting God’s rational mind, while our ability to grasp them stems from our being made in the imago dei


Fifth, Plantinga argues that the reliability of inductive reasoning (our assumption that patterns observed in the past will continue into the future) is difficult to justify on purely naturalistic grounds. Following David Hume, he notes that induction cannot be proved without circular reasoning. Theism, however, explains that inductive reasoning is successful because a rational God created an orderly world and reliable cognitive faculties. 


Sixth, science’s preference for simple, elegant theories to describe the world. Plantinga sees this as further evidence of a fit between the human mind and the structure of reality. 


Finally, Plantinga argues that the very empirical character of science is grounded in the theological doctrine of creation's contingency. Because God freely chose to create this particular world, its specific laws could not be deduced in advance but must be discovered through observation and experiment. He notes that the mathematician Roger Cotes made this connection explicit in his Preface to Newton’s Principia Mathematica


Plantinga closes by noting that naturalism is not merely neutral on all these points but is in deep tension with them.

Part 3, Chapters 7-9 Analysis

In this section, Plantinga seeks to further demonstrate The Deep Concord Between Theism and Science by focusing on biological complexity. By discussing arguments for and against the existence of an “intelligent designer” of life, the author addresses an apparent conflict between science and Christian belief head-on. He acknowledges that Michael Behe’s concept of “irreducible complexity,” which favors intelligent design, faces legitimate critiques. However, his critique is largely directed at evolutionary scientists such as Richard Dawkins, whom he infers is actively hostile to the Christian on intelligent design.  


Plantinga suggests that recognizing intelligent design is a non-inferential “basic way” of forming beliefs, much like identifying a mountain goat. By repositioning design as an immediate perceptual impression—one that Darwin himself admitted, “often comes over me with overwhelming force” (246)—Plantinga insulates theistic belief from direct empirical falsification. This argument allows him to validate intelligent design without proving its mechanics. This philosophical shielding runs counter to established scientific consensus. Behe’s claims regarding structures like the bacterial flagellum have been extensively challenged and rejected by mainstream science, most notably in the 2005 Kitzmiller v. Dover ruling, which determined that intelligent design is not a scientifically credible position. Plantinga’s defense thus bypasses the rigorous empirical standards that define the biological sciences, creating a philosophical safe haven for theological concepts that cannot survive peer-reviewed scrutiny.


To fortify his presentation of Design Discourse as Moderate Support for Theism, Plantinga employs a rhetorical strategy of deliberate concession regarding the limits of cosmological and biological evidence. Throughout Chapter 7, he systematically evaluates objections to the fine-tuning argument, including anthropic principles and many-universes theories. Rather than declaring victory over these secular counterarguments, he concedes that probability assignments for cosmic constants are fraught with mathematical difficulty, concluding only that the fine-tuning argument provides “some slight support for theism” (224). By openly acknowledging the limitations and vulnerabilities of these specific design arguments, Plantinga curates a persona of objective academic rigor and calculated modesty. This early rhetorical restraint structurally prepares the text for his sweeping thesis in Chapter 9. He lowers the stakes of specific scientific debates by directing the reader’s focus toward his ultimate conclusion: that the true harmony between science and religion lies in the foundational philosophical preconditions that make science possible in the first place.


In Chapter 9, the text argues for a deep concord between theism and science by framing scientific method as inherently Christian. Plantinga makes this case by outlining several prerequisites for scientific inquiry—such as the regularity of the universe, the efficacy of mathematics, and the reliability of inductive reasoning—and tracing them to the doctrine of the imago dei. Because humans are created in God’s image, Plantinga argues, there is a designed fit between human cognitive faculties and external reality. He also contends that naturalism, by contrast, must rely on “blind luck” (270) to explain this congruence. By seeking to undermine the “science” behind naturalist beliefs, the author establishes the theme of Naturalism’s Internal Contradictions. Meanwhile, by framing empirical observation and mathematical abstraction as reflections of a rational Creator, the text attempts to render the practice of science as a fundamentally religious activity. 


The core of Plantinga’s defense of theism relies on his use of defeaters and deflector beliefs to manage the boundaries between scientific evidence and religious conviction. In Chapter 8, Plantinga addresses evolutionary biology not as a total refutation of intelligent design, but as a weak, partial defeater at the level of gross anatomy that fails entirely at the molecular level. Crucially, he argues that a believer’s prior faith acts as a deflector, actively preventing Darwinian considerations from dislodging the foundational belief in a divine Creator. This structural logic permits the text to acknowledge the findings of modern science without allowing those findings to dismantle core theological axioms. By treating faith as an independent, equally weighted source of evidence, Plantinga builds an intellectual ecosystem where theology remains immune to secular scientific paradigms. While Plantinga attempts to secure the rationality of the Christian perspective, he fundamentally redefines what constitutes valid evidence, diverging sharply from the universally accepted parameters of scientific inquiry, which rely on testable, physical mechanisms.
