As the protagonist and first-person narrator of Scion, Azure is a dynamic and round character whose journey is defined by a search for truth and identity. Initially, he presents himself as a consummate professional, an assassin who is emotionally detached from the violent nature of his work. This detachment is a carefully constructed defense mechanism, reinforced by his reliance on genetic revisions, or “revs,” which allow him to manage pain and sharpen his focus. He claims his profession is simply a job, a societal role legitimized by Resolution 10010, stating, “I’m not proud or ashamed of the number [of people he’s killed], so I don’t keep count” (39). This calculated indifference masks a deep-seated trauma stemming from the Oceanus bombing, an event that killed his friend Landry and resulted in Azure’s own near-death and subsequent reconstruction, leaving him in perpetual debt to his employers, the Keres. His consumption of the rare nostrum called Deep is the only way he can access his buried emotions, revealing a core of humanity he otherwise keeps suppressed.
Azure’s primary conflict is internal, centered on his fractured identity and lack of agency. He operates as an elite tool for the Keres, but the discovery that they have created a clone, or “scion,” of him forces him to confront the reality that his very being is a corporate asset.
