This TV series context fundamentally shaped the book’s structure and tone, requiring a translation of visual media into narrative form. The book distills the show’s dynamic on-screen experiments and interviews into a more streamlined, textual format, acting as a form of summary document for the series. Neurolaw is an interdisciplinary field that examines how discoveries in neuroscience should inform legal standards and practice (Hayes, Hannah. “Neurolaw.” The American Bar Association, 17 Dec. 2017). The field explores questions of free will, criminal responsibility, and addiction, challenging long-held legal assumptions about human behavior. These ideas are a central theme in David Eagleman’s work: As a leading proponent of this shift, he founded the Center for Science and Law to bridge the gap between brain science and jurisprudence (Center for Science and Law.) In The Brain Eagleman has a special interest in addiction and substance-related offenses, applying neurolaw principles to advocate for a more evidence-based, rehabilitative criminal justice system. He argues that behaviors like drug addiction are better understood as problems of brain circuitry than moral failings and uses neurolaw to propose approaches to social policy that he considers more humane, effective, and appropriate, drawing on research to demonstrate the effects of rehabilitation. For instance, he describes fMRI experiments where people addicted to cocaine watch a “speedometer” that reflects the battle between their “craving network” and “suppression network.” By practicing with this feedback, they learn to strengthen the neural circuits for impulse control. This application directly embodies the book’s thesis: Understanding the brain’s mechanics allows for targeted, non-punitive interventions.
