Chapter 4 Summary: “How Do I Decide?”

The chapter argues that human decision-making is the outcome of a conflict between competing systems in the brain. The author likens the brain to a “neural parliament” where rival factions—some impulsive, some generous, some focused on long-term goals—battle for control. This internal conflict, determines our choices, not a logical weighing of pros and cons.


To illustrate this, the author describes recording the brain activity of a patient named Jim during surgery. As Jim viewed an ambiguous image that can be perceived as either a young lady or an old woman, the moment his perception “flips” corresponded to a new pattern of neurons firing. This demonstrates that a decision is a physical change in the brain as one neural coalition wins out over another. The “trolley dilemma,” a famous thought experiment, further reveals this internal conflict. When asked if they would pull a lever to divert a trolley, killing one person to save five others, most people agree. This choice activates logical problem-solving regions in the brain. However, when the scenario changes to pushing a large man onto the tracks to achieve the same result, most people refuse. Emotional and physiological signals from the body are important for decision-making.
