Published in 2015, The Brain: The Story of You is a work of popular science by American neuroscientist David Eagleman. It was written as the companion book to his Emmy-nominated PBS television series of the same name. In this book, Eagleman takes readers on a tour of the “inner cosmos,” arguing that the human conscious experience is a complex and dynamic construction of the physical brain. Eagleman draws on a wide range of vivid case studies—from individuals with rare neurological disorders to perpetrators of genocide and champions of extreme sports—to illustrate complex scientific concepts, deconstructing popular intuitive assumptions about the mind to reveal that human identity, perception, and choice are driven by vast, hidden electrochemical processes. In doing so, he explores themes such as Reality as a Neurological Construct and The Unconscious Drivers of Human Behavior, which posits that most of our actions are governed by automated neural machinery operating beyond our awareness. The book’s central argument culminates in the theme of Neuroplasticity as Evolutionary Advantage, framing the brain’s ability to constantly rewire itself as the key to both human adaptability and our species’ future.
Eagleman, an adjunct professor at Stanford University, is the bestselling author of several other books on neuroscience, including Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain (2011) and Livewired (2020). Eagleman states that his book will challenge the reader’s fundamental sense of self and reality, arguing that these are elaborate constructions, He introduces the concept of the brain as being “livewired,” meaning its circuitry is constantly being rewritten by every life experience. From this perspective, identity is a “moving target,” shaped less by what grows in the brain and more by what is pruned away through childhood and adolescence. Similarly, Eagleman presents the nature of memory as a fragile and malleable reconstruction of the past, not a factual or objective recording of fact. This constructed internal world extends to our perception of external reality. The rich, colorful, and sensory world we inhabit is an illusion: The brain, sealed off from the world, receives only streams of abstract electrochemical signals from its sense organs. From this limited data, it builds an “internal model”—a predictive, energy-efficient simulation of what’s out there, which is heavily colored by an individual’s past experience and expectation.
Eagleman questions who, or what, is in control. He reveals the conscious mind—the part we identify as “me”—to be a tiny portion of the brain’s total operation. Most of our sophisticated skills and behaviors run on “autopilot,” having been burned into the brain’s physical structure through practice and relegated to the unconscious. Decision-making, therefore, is not the conscious, rational acting that experience leads us to believe. Instead, decisions emerge from ongoing conflicts between competing neural networks, some impulsive and focused on immediate reward, others concerned with long-term consequences. Our conscious choices are thus the momentary victors in these internal battles, heavily swayed by the ever-changing physiological states of our bodies.
Eagleman turns from the individual to the collective, asserting that human brains are fundamentally social organs that depend on one another to survive and thrive. A significant portion of our neural real estate is dedicated to social cognition: reading intentions, mirroring facial expressions, and feeling the pain of others through the biological machinery of empathy. This innate drive for connection, which Eagleman terms “eusociality,” is the evolutionary glue that allows for the cooperation and alliances necessary to build complex societies. Yet, this instinct can cause divisions, as the drive to form an “ingroup” simultaneously creates an “outgroup.” Eagleman argues that this dynamic can be easily manipulated through propaganda to short-circuit empathy, leading to dehumanization—where the brain begins to process other people as objects rather than as fellow humans—to enable humanity’s worst atrocities.
The book concludes by arguing that the brain’s most important feature—its plasticity—is the key to humanity’s future. Because the brain is a flexible, general-purpose computing device, it does not care where its data comes from, a principle that allows it to function as a “plug-and-play” system. This adaptability opens the door to technological and medical improvements. Eagleman explores how emerging technologies like sensory substitution and brain-machine interfaces can allow us to feed new data streams into the brain and control non-biological limbs, suggesting a near future where we can augment our senses and radically extend our bodies. In the more distant future, this same potential may allow for the preservation of our minds after death or even the uploading of our consciousness into digital substrates. Eagleman posits that this technological and biological co-evolution will fundamentally change what it means to be human, launching our species into a new, transhumanist era.
