After Jed’s arrest, Clare tries to arrange for Dorothy to watch Sadie, but her mother-in-law is evasive. When Clare and Sadie return to their apartment, they find it has been searched by the police, with a few drawers left open and a corner of the living room rug folded back. Clare calls Dorothy again, who informs her that she has already hired the city’s best criminal defense lawyer and is handling the situation. Dorothy blames Clare for Jed’s predicament, refuses to let her see her husband, and hangs up. Cut off by the Basts, Clare worries that Dorothy might be framing her. She fruitlessly searches the apartment for evidence.

Clare calls Detective Breznick, who reveals that Jed has been arrested for first-degree manslaughter. After calling her friend Maggie for support, Clare receives a call from Elise. Elise asks if Jed has Longfin, and Clare feigns ignorance. They make a deal: Clare will give Elise Jed’s phone number in exchange for information about the police’s evidence against him. Elise then reveals a curious fact: Gabriel deleted a significant amount of data from his computer on October 19th, Dorothy’s birthday and the night after the MoCA party when Jed and Gabriel first met.
