Adalyn Reyes, the head of communications for the Miami Flames soccer club, is in a meeting with her father, Andrew Underwood, the team’s CEO, and her ex-boyfriend David, the VP of Operations. They force her to watch a video of an incident she doesn’t fully remember: attacking the team mascot, Sparkles, and ripping off its costume head. Even though Paul, the man inside the mascot suit, was not physically harmed, the video has gone viral with 6 million views and the hashtag #sparklesgate.

Andrew reads a series of humiliating headlines that mock her as “Lady Birdinator” and analyze her “female rage.” Andrew tells Adalyn that David persuaded Paul not to press charges or sue, and David adds that he offered Paul a raise, which Paul accepted. Andrew declares Adalyn an embarrassment to him and the club. As punishment, he exiles her from Miami until the end of the season, sending her on a “a philanthropic initiative that will require [her] presence and all that newfound…passion” (9) in a remote location. He warns her not to disappoint him again.
