Chapter 10 Summary: “Cameron”

At the local soccer field, Cameron is cornered in an impromptu meeting with Adalyn, Josie, and two concerned parents, Diane and Gabriel. The parents express mistrust of Adalyn, referencing an online incident that makes them question her fitness to be around their children. Josie proposes a solution: Cameron will co-coach the girls’ soccer team with Adalyn, which Adalyn quietly accepts. Diane becomes increasingly hostile, accusing Adalyn of being a wealthy outsider trying to change their town. When Diane’s comments become personal, Cameron intervenes to end the confrontation. Josie leads the parents away, dubbing Cameron “Coach Cam.”

Left alone with Adalyn, Cameron learns the parents will only accept her if he is involved. She offers to pay him for his time, but he refuses. Adalyn admits that she was banished from her Miami Flames job because she “breached the conduct clause of [her] contract [by getting] physical. With someone,” admitting, “I messed up” (92). Cameron agrees to co-coach and offers her camping supplies from his car, revealing he knows her cabin’s mattress is infested. Adalyn pridefully rejects the offer, but Cameron insists. As he prepares to leave, Adalyn threatens to expose his true identity to the entire town if he doesn’t agree to coach the team.
