The group checks the orange tent. Inside there are three sleeping bags, a couple backpacks, and some oil lamps. The vines have grown over much of it, spilling out of one of the bags. At the top of the hill, which is flat with a clearing, they find a blue tent. Inside they find more sleeping bags and camping gear, also overgrown with vines. Just beyond the blue tent, there is a deep hole in the ground. It has a windlass next to it with a rope coiled around it that runs into the hole; Jeff guesses that it is a mineshaft.
With no other choice, they decide to continue across the clearing where the path goes down the other side of the hill. However, they see one of the Mayan men waiting at the bottom with a bow and arrow. He yells, and several others join him, including one man with a rifle. As they discuss whether to turn back or to challenge them, Jeff notices a strange mound of flowers nearby. He approaches it, part of him already knowing what it is, then begins pulling away the vines.
