In Málaga, 2001, a British criminal named Connor Brooks is hiding from the Met Police. Convinced that an informant has revealed his location, he reflects on his seven prison sentences and his career selling “dodgy vitamins.” After receiving a tip-off from a friend that the police are coming for him, Brooks decides to fake his own death. His plan involves leaving a suicide note and clothes on the beach. With a new passport and a bag of cash, he intends to disappear, continue his vitamin business, and find somewhere he can use his preferred nickname, “The Guv’nor.” He makes a final vow: to find the person who betrayed him and kill them.
Steve Wheeler is having lunch at The Brass Monkey pub with his friends Tony Taylor, Jyoti Das, and John Todd. When Steve mentions that he’s going to London for a book launch, his friends warn him of the city’s dangers and expenses. Steve explains that the novelist Rosie D’Antonio is appearing on The Graham Norton Show and that the show is providing a hotel for him and his daughter-in-law, Amy Wheeler. The conversation turns to Steve’s new detective agency, We Solve Murders, where Tony’s girlfriend, Felicity Woollaston, works as the office manager.
