Jim Collins is a researcher and author best known for his influential business books, including the bestsellers Good to Great (2001) and Built to Last (1994). He began his career on the faculty of the Stanford Graduate School of Business and later founded The Good to Great Project, where he continued his research on companies and leadership. Collins’s research approach uses systematic comparisons between companies with different performance trajectories to identify factors associated with long-term success. What to Make of a Life marks a shift for Collins, extending his comparative research approach to the study of individual lives and examining “remarkable” people in pairs matched at significant life “cliffs.”
Collins’s corporate research has faced methodological criticism concerning the selection of successful companies and the difficulty of determining whether the identified principles distinguish success from other possible factors. This book’s methodology invites a similar critique, as Collins himself acknowledges that his subjects are not a random sample, but “luminaries” chosen because “that’s where the data is” (7). The book’s principles are derived from the lives of highly accomplished and often famous individuals—presidents, Nobel laureates, and world-class artists— whose extensively documented lives provide unusually rich material for longitudinal comparison but do not constitute a representative sample. Collins also brings a background best known for management and organizational research to a study of individual life direction and self-knowledge, extending his established comparative approach into a different area of inquiry. These factors do not invalidate the patterns identified in the book, but they limit how confidently its findings can be generalized across a broader and more diverse population.
