Ezra Cloud

As the protagonist of the novel, Ezra Cloud develops from an alienated teenager into a young Ojibwe man with a stronger sense of identity and responsibility. Initially, Ezra struggles with his anger and grief following his mother’s death. He feels disconnected from his father, Byron, and resents their life in Northeast Minneapolis, a place he associates with “dirty snow” (7) and the systemic dangers faced by Indigenous people. This internal turmoil manifests as a volatile temper, culminating in him punching a school locker. His isolation resembles that of the “omega,” a lone wolf his grandfather later describes as separated from its pack. His identity as a member of the wolf clan is a piece of ancestral knowledge whose significance he has yet to fully understand.

The turning point for Ezra is his father’s decision to send him to the trapline at Chief’s Ridge with his grandfather, Liam. This experience contributes to his development and is central to the theme of Raising Children with Cultural Traditions and Knowledge. On the trapline, Ezra learns the practical and spiritual responsibilities of hunting and trapping. He is taught to respect the animals he harvests, offer tobacco, and understand the interconnectedness of all living things.
