Where Wolves Don't Die

Ezra Cloud, a 15-year-old member of the Ojibwe, an Indigenous nation, belongs to the wolf clan, a kinship group connected to the wolf. He lives in Northeast Minneapolis, a neighborhood he despises. His family comes from Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation, a small community on Rainy Lake along the Ontario-Minnesota border, known in English as "Red Gut." Though stuck in the city, Ezra's heart remains at Red Gut with his Grandpa Liam, a 74-year-old trapper.

In ninth-grade biology, Ezra sits next to Nora George, his lifelong friend and fellow Ojibwe, toward whom he has begun feeling romantic attraction. When Ezra answers a question expertly, Matt Schroeder, a racist classmate whose family runs a meth lab, calls him a "dumb Indian." Ezra's hatred runs deep: Two years earlier, Matt slapped him and hurled slurs at him on a canoe trip while counselors did nothing.

Ezra also carries the weight of his mother Isabelle's death one year earlier from leukemia, which he believes was caused by chemicals at her workplace. He is furious at his father, Byron Cloud, a professor of Ojibwe language, for not saving Isabelle and for keeping the family in Northeast.

When Ezra finds Matt grabbing Nora's wrist in the hallway, Nora urges him not to hit Matt. Ezra punches a locker instead, fracturing his left hand, which requires stitches and a cast. On the way home from the hospital, he blurts out that maybe he will kill himself, a comment he immediately regrets. Byron insists Ezra never say that again.

That night, after taking a prescribed painkiller, Ezra catches a flash of brown and gray in the hallway. He dreams of running with a wolf pack, cornering Matt in a house, and watching it burn. The next morning, Byron tells him that Matt's father and uncle died in a meth lab fire. Matt survived. Detective John Williams informs them the fire is being investigated as arson-homicide. Matt appears, bandaged and furious, screaming that he knows what they did.

Byron decides to leave immediately for Red Gut. Grandpa Liam and Grandma Emma welcome them, and Ezra sleeps on the couch with Buster, Grandpa Liam's small mutt. A Zoom interview with Detective Williams, facilitated by Ojibwe attorney Paul Taylor, clears Ezra: His injury and medication made it impossible for him to leave the house that night. The interview also reveals that someone fought with the Schroeders and held the front door shut while the house burned.

Byron tells Ezra he will complete ninth grade remotely and spend the winter learning the trapline, a network of animal traps along wilderness trails, at Chief's Ridge with Grandpa Liam. Ezra is overjoyed but worries about leaving Nora unprotected. He proposes they investigate the fire independently to protect their families. Nora agrees, and they exchange red notebooks to record their findings.

During preparations, Ezra overhears Byron and Grandpa Liam arguing about Ethan and Olivia, Grandpa Liam and Grandma Emma's two oldest children, though Ezra does not yet understand the reference. Grandpa Liam insists Ezra cannot learn the truth until after his first kill. On departure morning, Ezra notices a burn scar on Grandma Emma's palm.

At Chief's Ridge, a remote one-room log cabin in the boreal forest, Grandpa Liam teaches Ezra the art and spirituality of trapping. The ridge is named for the alpha wolf whose pack has claimed the territory for 11,000 years. The current alpha, called Ogimaa ("Chief"), is a massive gray wolf so light he appears almost white. Grandpa Liam tells Ezra about the omega, the lone wolf whose solitary period can forge the strength to rejoin or even lead the pack, and asks which wolf Ezra is.

Ezra shoots his first moose and performs traditional tobacco offerings. When Byron visits, they discover Ogimaa caught in a trap. Ezra refuses to let Byron shoot the wolf, as killing their clan animal is taboo, and restrains the animal in a submission hold while Byron releases the trap.

At his first kill feast, Ezra follows tradition by refusing three offerings of moose meat, dedicating each refusal to those in need, and accepting on the fourth. He distributes the meat to the community, marking his transition from dependent to provider. He also accidentally gives Nora the notebook containing his private feelings instead of the investigation notes. She tells him she loved what he wrote, and they share their first kiss on Valentine's Day.

Near the end of trapping season, Grandpa Liam reveals the truth about Ethan and Olivia. The Canadian government took them to the Brandon Indian Residential School, an institution that forcibly separated Indigenous children from their families. Olivia died of tuberculosis there; Ethan likely died from physical abuse and was buried in a mass grave. After losing them, Grandpa Liam and Grandma Emma built the cabin at Chief's Ridge and raised Byron there to keep him safe. Grandpa Liam weeps openly for the first time in Ezra's memory.

On their final morning at Chief's Ridge, a massive bear called Chi-awesiinh, meaning "Big Animal," attacks. When the bear charges Grandpa Liam, Ogimaa and the wolf pack emerge and kill it. Ezra climbs down from a tree to find his grandfather gravely wounded.

Airlifted to the hospital in Fort Frances, Ontario, Grandpa Liam survives surgery but develops a staph infection. He gives Ezra final instructions: Place certain papers in the kitchen at Red Gut, and stop turning away from Byron. He tells Ezra he has been the omega long enough and it is time to join the pack.

Grandpa Liam dies while Ezra and Byron are driving back to the reserve. On the morning of the wake, Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers and Detective Williams execute a search warrant, finding cash receipts and a handwritten confession implicating Grandpa Liam in the Schroeder fire. Grandma Emma turned in the evidence herself. Matt Schroeder appears at the reserve, having crossed the unprotected border with a pipe wrench. Buster distracts him, Ezra tackles him, and Byron and community members restrain Matt until police arrest him.

At the home of Nora's grandmother, Rita Kingfisher, Nora and her mother, Ruth George, reveal the truth. On the night of the fire, Matt dragged Nora into the Schroeder house. Ruth heard her screams, forced her way inside, and fought to free her daughter. When Matt tumbled into his father and uncle near the meth lab, it exploded. The fire was an accident. Ruth went back to help but the door handle burned through her palms. Matt crawled out a basement window, saw Ruth from behind, and mistook her for Nora. When Grandpa Liam learned the truth from his hospital bed, he wrote the confession to protect Ruth and Nora and arranged for the evidence to be found.

At a gravesite near Isabelle's burial place, Ezra and Byron dig Grandpa Liam's grave together. Ezra sees his father in a new light: soaked, muddy, bleeding, yet steadfast. Overwhelmed by remorse for his year of anger, he tries to say everything: that he will never hurt himself, that he is done being the omega, that he loves his father. His voice catches and emerges as a howl and tears. Byron folds him into a tight embrace. In the distance, wolves howl in chorus. For the first time, Ezra feels truly at home.
