However, as new technologies emerge and curiosity about Akinah grows, these methods prove counterproductive. Their attempts to frighten Rysn’s expedition with deliberately arranged omens—a dead skyeel, worm-infested grain, and a disintegrating santhid corpse—fail to deter the crew. Instead, these strange events confirm that something valuable is being hidden, making the island more mysterious and alluring. Rysn astutely observes this pattern, telling the Sleepless agent Nikli, “Each lie you spin makes the mystery more entrancing” (248). Rysn’s eventual success in negotiating with the Sleepless hinges on her ability to replace their long-standing approach with a strategy of carefully managed information-sharing. She devises a plan that acknowledges Akinah’s importance while presenting it in a way that protects the Dawnshard’s true nature. Her plan involves a public story of ancient trials and treasures, a semi-private story for political leaders about a pact with the island’s guardians, and the core secret of the Dawnshard, known only to a select few. This strategy protects the ultimate secret by satisfying the curiosity of various parties with credible explanations. In doing so, Rysn demonstrates that carefully managing information and building trust can protect dangerous knowledge more effectively than relying on secrecy alone.
