Accommodation as a Path to Empowerment

In Dawnshard, Sanderson explores how accessibility, adaptation, and self-advocacy support independence for people with disabilities. Through the character of Rysn Ftori, who has lost the use of her legs, the novella highlights the barriers created by inaccessible environments while emphasizing innovation, self-advocacy, and community as the means of supporting her independence. Rysn’s growing independence is shaped by changes to the tools, environments, and social expectations around her, allowing her to navigate the world on her own terms.

The narrative acknowledges that magical healing is not an option for Rysn. Early in the story, Rysn confirms that the miraculous healing of the Knights Radiant cannot heal her old injury, a fact she explains after having already come to terms with that reality. When Queen Navani later offers the services of a Radiant who specializes in Regrowth, the suggestion, though well-intentioned, reflects a common assumption that disability should be medically resolved instead of considering how people can be supported in their existing circumstances. Rysn’s polite refusal signals her focus has shifted toward building a full and capable life through the accommodations, relationships, and opportunities available to her.

As Rysn adapts to her new circumstances, she finds strength and practical solutions through a community of shared experience. She corresponds with other women who have also lost the use of their legs across the world, sharing designs for assistive devices such as specialized hooks for dressing and schematics for a new type of wheeled chair she can move herself. This network provides practical tools for greater independence as well as emotional validation, countering the isolation she once felt. By showing these innovations emerging from the disabled community itself, Sanderson emphasizes that those with lived experience are often best positioned to understand their own needs, capable of developing solutions that others might not envision.

Ultimately, Rysn’s journey is one of claiming a place in the world. She commissions a permanent, customized seat on the quarterdeck of her ship, the Wandersail, insisting on being present and active during the voyage. This act directly challenges the crew’s assumption that she would remain secluded in her cabin. Her visible presence reflects her determination to continue leading and participating fully in the expedition despite the physical barriers she faces. This theme culminates in the accidental discovery of a new fabrial application that allows her chair to hover. This technology provides an accommodation that greatly expands her mobility and independence. Rysn’s excitement centers on gaining a tool that allows her to navigate her environment on her own terms, bringing her journey toward greater independence full circle.

The Dangers of Secrecy

Sanderson’s Dawnshard explores how secrecy becomes increasingly difficult to maintain when it relies on isolation and fear. The novella contrasts the centuries-old approach of the Sleepless with the collaborative negotiation modeled by Rysn Ftori. Through this juxtaposition, the narrative demonstrates that protecting dangerous knowledge depends on carefully managing information and building alliances capable of safeguarding it. When secrecy cannot adapt to changing circumstances, it becomes more difficult to sustain, whereas carefully managed information-sharing can strengthen its long-term protection.

The Sleepless, who have long guarded the Dawnshard on the island of Akinah, exemplify the flaws of relying solely on secrecy and isolation to protect dangerous knowledge. For centuries, they have relied on a magical storm, omens, and misdirection to keep outsiders away. However, as new technologies emerge and curiosity about Akinah grows, these methods prove counterproductive. Their attempts to frighten Rysn’s expedition with deliberately arranged omens—a dead skyeel, worm-infested grain, and a disintegrating santhid corpse—fail to deter the crew. Instead, these strange events confirm that something valuable is being hidden, making the island more mysterious and alluring. Rysn astutely observes this pattern, telling the Sleepless agent Nikli, “Each lie you spin makes the mystery more entrancing” (248). Their rigid secrecy paradoxically fuels the very scrutiny they seek to avoid.

The novella also illustrates that secrecy can create uncertainty even among allies, making cooperation more difficult. Queen Navani Kholin, Rysn’s patron, withholds the expedition’s primary objective: locating a lost Oathgate on Akinah. Rysn only learns the full truth through her mentor, Vstim, revealing that Navani had withheld an important part of the mission. This lack of transparency from the Alethi leadership limits Rysn’s understanding of the expedition’s purpose until late in the voyage, giving her a fuller understanding of its purpose once she learns the full objective. This demonstrates that withholding important information can complicate cooperation, even between trusted allies.

Rysn’s eventual success in negotiating with the Sleepless hinges on her ability to replace their long-standing approach with a strategy of carefully managed information-sharing. She devises a plan that acknowledges Akinah’s importance while presenting it in a way that protects the Dawnshard’s true nature. Her plan involves a public story of ancient trials and treasures, a semi-private story for political leaders about a pact with the island’s guardians, and the core secret of the Dawnshard, known only to a select few. This strategy protects the ultimate secret by satisfying the curiosity of various parties with credible explanations. In doing so, Rysn demonstrates that carefully managing information and building trust can protect dangerous knowledge more effectively than relying on secrecy alone.

Change as a Strategy for Survival

Dawnshard explores how the ability to adapt enables individuals and communities to respond to changing circumstances. This theme is expressed most directly through the divine Command “Change,” which is represented by the Dawnshard itself, and Sanderson develops it through characters who adapt their strategies, perspectives, and behavior. Whether it is Rysn turning a logistical disaster into a profitable trade or the Lopen re-evaluating his relationships with others, the narrative shows that adaptability allows characters to respond more effectively to new challenges.

Rysn Ftori’s journey is defined by her ability to adapt to new realities. Her willingness to rethink problems from new perspectives proves essential to the mission when the ship’s grain stores become infested with worms, a discovery the crew views as a disastrous omen. Instead of accepting the crew’s fears, Rysn draws on her training and reframes the problem. She reroutes the ship to trade the supposedly worthless grain to Hexi nomads, who consider the worms a delicacy. This act of creative problem-solving secures fresh supplies for the expedition, restores the crew’s confidence, and reinforces Rysn’s leadership. Her ability to adapt transforms an apparent setback into an opportunity.

Personal growth is also framed as an important form of adaptation. For much of the journey, the Lopen uses relentless, often teasing, humor in his interactions with others. However, he comes to recognize the negative impact of his jokes when his cousin Huio reveals that they can be hurtful. Rather than becoming defensive, the Lopen accepts this criticism and resolves to change his behavior. He vows, “I’ve got to protect people, you know? Even from myself” (284). This moment of self-reflection allows him to swear his next Ideal as a Knight Radiant. His evolution demonstrates that adapting one’s behavior and understanding of others is an important part of personal growth.

The novella’s climax shows change on a broader scale as the Sleepless recognize that their centuries-old strategy of guarding Akinah through secrecy and isolation is no longer viable. Rysn persuades them that their survival depends on adapting their approach by accepting a limited alliance and a new way of protecting the Dawnshard. By accepting this change, they replace their previous isolation with a strategy better suited to changing circumstances. Their decision reflects the Dawnshard’s Command to “Change,” reinforcing the novella’s broader message that adaptation is essential to meeting new challenges.
