Chapter 11 Summary

The ship Wandersail uses fabrials, magical devices powered by Stormlight, to breach the violent, unnatural storm surrounding the island of Akinah. Lopen, a Windrunner Radiant, insists on staying on deck and gains a new respect for the skill and determination of the Thaylen sailors as they navigate the storm. As the ship is battered by enormous waves, a sailor named Turlm is washed overboard. Lopen immediately uses Lashings to dive into the dark water and rescue the man. He brings Turlm back to the ship, where Fimkn, a sailor with medical training, tends to him. To prevent the captain from suffering the same fate, Lopen uses a Lashing to secure one of her feet to the deck.

As the storm rages, Rua, Lopen’s honorspren companion, detects a large shadow moving beneath the ship. Lopen understands Rua to be identifying it as one of the creatures capable of draining Stormlight, the magical energy used by Knights Radiant, which previously overwhelmed a Radiant scouting party. He remains vigilant and saves another sailor, Wvlan, from being swept away. Soon after, the ship breaks through the storm wall into a circle of calm water at the center. Before them is the island of Akinah, surrounded by a ring of massive stone spikes with a single, clear opening.

Chapter 12 Summary

Rysn sits on the quarterdeck with her ailing larkin, Chiri-Chiri, as the Wandersail approaches Akinah. The ship’s lookouts report seeing large, unlit diamond gemhearts scattered on the beach among the carapaces of ancient greatshells. Rysn orders the ship to make a cautious approach and directs the armsman Kstled to lead a reconnaissance party to secure the beach before the Radiants continue their mission. The captain skillfully navigates the ship through the gap in the stone pillars. Cord, Rysn’s Horneater guard, reports that Lopen’s mysterious shadow creature appears to be physical rather than a spren and notes that she can see luckspren—spren associated with flight—in the air, though they avoid flying directly over the island.

As they draw closer to the shore, Chiri-Chiri becomes alert for the first time in weeks while staring at the sky. Suddenly, she flies into the air with renewed energy. The luckspren swarm, and Chiri-Chiri unexpectedly dives into the ocean, revealing she can swim as she follows them out of sight. Rysn fears she has lost her companion but resolves to wait for her return. Meanwhile, a shore party led by the armsman Kstled is launched in rowboats to secure the beach. The party includes Lopen, his cousin Huio, and the ardent Rushu, who joins despite Rysn’s suggestion that she wait until the beach is declared safe.

Chapter 13 Summary

Lopen uses a Lashing to propel his rowboat toward the island, noticing that the mysterious creature believed to drain Stormlight follows them before retreating to the depths. The shore party lands on a beach littered with the skeletal remains of greatshells and large gemhearts that appear to be diamond. Rushu, a scholar, speculates that the island is a place where greatshells come to die and tells the sailors to begin collecting the gems, promising them a share of the salvage.

Lopen observes that the carapaces and gemhearts are unnaturally clean, with no buildup of crem, the hardened sediment left by highstorms, leading him to realize that highstorms do not reach Akinah. He joins Rushu and a small squad of sailors to scout the city ruins inland in search of Akinah’s hidden Oathgate. Huio remains on the beach with the main group, equipped with a spanreed—a magical communication device he uses to signal Lopen by blinking its paired gemstone.

Chapter 14 Summary

Aboard the Wandersail, Cord informs Rysn that the luckspren have all gone into the water. Cord then reveals a critical secret: Her homeland, the Horneater Peaks, contains a gateway to Shadesmar. She fears that other nations will soon discover this seek control of it and her homeland, and explains that she wants treasure so she can acquire Shardblades and Shardplate to defend her people. Rysn realizes she had mistakenly assumed Cord’s desire for treasure was motivated by simpler personal motives.

The mention of treasure triggers a memory for Rysn of a lesson from her mentor, Vstim. He taught her that merchants who ostentatiously display wealth often do so to distract from a greater prize or to hide that they have less than they appear. Realizing the gemhearts on the beach may be intended to draw attention away from something more valuable, Rysn decides to warn Rushu’s scouting party and immediately sends a sailor to deliver a message.

Chapter 15 Summary

Lopen and Rushu’s party finds the ancient city ruins covered in crem, which is inconsistent with the pristine beach. They discover what looks like an Oathgate— a magical transportation platform—but it is ruined and non-functional. After receiving Rysn’s warning note, Rushu inspects a gemheart from the beach and confirms it is quartz rather than diamond, leading them to conclude that both the gemhearts and the apparent Oathgate are part of an elaborate deception.

Rushu deduces the entire surface city is a decoy and that the real Akinah is buried underground. They find a hidden stairwell that ends at a solid stone wall. Rushu reveals her own Soulcaster, a fabrial that can change one substance to another, and Soulcasts the wall away. Beyond it lies a vast cavern containing the real, still-functional Oathgate. Beyond it lies a vast cavern containing the real, perfectly preserved Oathgate. Realizing they are in danger after finding the island’s true secret, Lopen flies back to the beach, where he finds a monster attacking Huio.

Simultaneously, the Wandersail is swarmed by thousands of small crustaceans that assemble into humanoid bodies. One takes the form of Nikli, who had served as Rysn’s porter. He reveals his people, the Sleepless, known to Cord as the Gods Who Sleep Not, created the fake city, Oathgate, and gemhearts to conceal the island’s true secret, but now that the expedition has found the Oathgate, they must all be killed. Cord identifies the creatures as gods from her people’s myths and, creating a diversion, grabs Rysn and leaps overboard into the sea.

Chapters 11-15 Analysis

Rysn’s recollection of her mentor Vstim’s lesson about wealth provides the key to deciphering Akinah’s mysteries. Vstim taught her that a conspicuous display of riches is a deliberate performance, meant to distract viewers from something of greater value, encouraging them to “fixate on it, and ignore some greater prize” (204). This merchant’s insight allows Rysn to recognize the island’s apparent treasures—the heaps of apparently priceless diamond gemhearts—as a carefully constructed deception. The narrative extends this pattern of misdirection through multiple layers of deception, each targeting a different kind of human ambition. The fake gemhearts appeal to greed; the meticulously arranged greatshell graveyard appeals to scholarly curiosity; and the ruined surface-level Oathgate appeals to the strategic interests of the Radiants. These elaborate decoys are the primary strategy of the island’s guardians, the Sleepless. Their attempts to protect Akinah’s secrets through misdirection embody The Dangers of Secrecy. By creating a scenario where visitors might accept the false treasures and leave, they hope to avoid confrontation. Their strategy fails when the expedition’s persistence uncovers the hidden Oathgate, prompting the Sleepless to resort to violence. The failure of their elaborate, layered plan demonstrates that secrecy built on deception can intensify conflict once outsiders uncover what has been hidden.

Lopen’s behavior during the storm and subsequent exploration shows a growing sense of responsibility alongside his characteristic humor. Initially, he treats the storm as a thrilling spectacle, engaging in competitive banter with sailors and refusing to take shelter belowdecks because it “[d]idn’t seem sporting!” (177). His attitude reflects his determination to appear fearless. When a sailor is washed overboard, his response is immediate and effective, demonstrating his reliability under pressure as a Knight Radiant. His decision to use his powers to adhere the captain’s foot to the deck is a proactive measure, showing careful attention to others’ safety. On the island, his characteristic humor continues alongside growing unease and vigilance. The discovery that the fake Oathgate and gemhearts constitute a trap changes his priorities, prompting him to abandon the scouting mission to protect his friends. This arc illustrates Change as a Strategy for Survival, as Lopen adapts to increasingly complex threats and protects those around him.

From her fixed seat on the quarterdeck, Rysn exercises leadership through perception and delegation, demonstrating that she can direct the expedition through judgment, communication, and support from her crew. Rysn possesses an advanced hovering chair, and her practical decision to leave it stowed for safety emphasizes her careful judgment during a dangerous approach to Akinah. From this position, she directs the entire shore party, issuing orders and, crucially, interpreting the evidence they send back. This dynamic highlights Accommodation as a Path to Empowerment, showing how Rysn’s leadership depends on observation, collaboration, and the accommodations available to her. The attack by the Sleepless brings the danger of the situation and the limits on her movement into sharp focus when she feels “trapped by her inability to walk” (218), and Cord’s rescue demonstrates the trust and cooperation that have developed between them. Rysn’s leadership continues through her judgment, decision-making, and responsibility for the expedition, with Cord’s assistance showing how cooperation supports survival during the attack.

The novella’s narrative structure builds an atmosphere of growing unease as the expedition approaches Akinah. The passage through the violent storm surrounding Akinah follows the beats of a classic maritime tale, stressing the skill of the sailors and the power of nature. Once the Wandersail enters the unnatural calm at the storm’s center, with its “too-still ocean” (181) and eerie silence, immediately signals a departure from the ordinary. On the island, this sense of wrongness intensifies. The clean, crem-free beach and the perfectly preserved greatshell skeletons suggest a landscape deliberately arranged to mislead visitors. Lopen’s growing nervousness in the “lonely ruins” (209) and Rysn’s suspicion that the scene is “too perfect” (199) build atmospheric tension, guiding the expedition toward the discovery that Akinah’s surface conceals a larger deception. This use of atmosphere prepares the later revelation that Akinah’s surface has been carefully arranged by the Sleepless to conceal the island’s true purpose.

The simultaneous discoveries expand the scope of the expedition by revealing that Akinah’s secrets extend beyond the mission’s original objectives. The story splits its perspective between Lopen discovering the real Oathgate underground and Rysn facing the Sleepless on the ship, using parallel action to accelerate the climax. Cord’s earlier confession that the Horneater Peaks hide a portal to Shadesmar also broadens the significance of her quest, connecting it to wider political tensions. The revelation of Nikli’s true form as a hive-mind entity further expands the novella’s world-building. His transformation from Rysn’s trusted porter into one of Akinah’s guardians reveals the extent of the Sleepless’ commitment to protecting the island’s secrets. Nikli’s apology and justification—that their actions are necessary because “the very cosmere is at stake” (221)—reveal that the conflict surrounding Akinah reaches far beyond the expedition itself. This revelation broadens the significance of the island’s hidden Oathgate and the Sleepless’ actions within the novella’s larger world.
