Chapter 16 Summary

After their ship is attacked, Cord carries Rysn and leaps with her into the ocean near Akinah. Cord, a powerful swimmer, pulls Rysn deep underwater. Rysn panics, remembering her near-fatal fall in the Reshi Isles, but then sees hundreds of glowing luckspren guiding them through an underwater tunnel toward a light in the rocks.

They emerge in an underwater cavern. Rysn uses the ruby fabrials from her ruined hovering chair, attaching them to a small bench to create a new levitating seat. Exploring a tunnel, they find a small room containing a full set of Shardplate, several Soulcaster devices, and a large mural of a sun shattering into four pieces, each broken into four smaller sections. Rysn is captivated by the mural, feeling a strange presence from it and experiencing intrusive thoughts.

As Cord tries to power the Shardplate, she asks Rysn for free gemstones. Rysn suggests using the rubies from the hovering bench, and Cord hooks them into the greaves of the Plate. Cord then discovers light and spren farther within the complex, but before they can investigate, they hear enemies approaching from the water. Rysn looks at the mural again, feels a mental command to “CHANGE,” and whispers her assent. An immense power flows from the mural into her mind, after which the mural no longer exerts its strange influence and appears to be just an ordinary piece of art.

Chapter 17 Summary

On the beach, the Radiant Lopen rescues his cousin, Huio, from the mouth of a giant, grub-like sea monster. The two fight the creature, trying to protect the cowering sailors. Lopen attempts to speak the next Windrunner Ideal in hopes of summoning Rua as a Shardblade, but realizes he cannot honestly swear it because he does not hate anyone, and Rua refuses to transform.

Back in the underwater cavern, the swarming cremling-like creatures assemble into a single humanoid figure that Rysn recognizes as Nikli, her former porter. Rysn calmly arranges a bench as a formal Thaylen negotiation table and invites him to talk. Nikli reveals he is ancient, having sailed with a historical figure four hundred years prior. Although Nikli insists there is nothing to negotiate, Rysn argues that he needs someone to keep the Sleepless’ secrets, opening negotiations between them.

Chapter 18 Summary

On the beach, Lopen and Huio continue trying to keep the giant sea creature away from the sailors. A swarm of small, flying hordelings drains Lopen’s Stormlight. He falls, breaking his leg, and is left defenseless. Huio places himself between Lopen and the advancing monster before speaking another Radiant Ideal and summoning a Shardhammer, which he uses to crack the creature’s armored limb.

In the cavern, Cord returns wearing partially powered Shardplate. She challenges Nikli to a duel, but her attempt at a traditional Horneater verbal trick fails because Nikli is not bound by the same ancient pacts. Nikli reveals his people’s original plan had been to let the crew leave with fake gemhearts and planted documents discrediting the island’s legends; after the crew saw his kind, the fallback plan became killing the crew and having impostors sail back to port, reporting that the island’s Oathgate was destroyed. After Rysn persuades Nikli to negotiate, he explains that his race, the Sleepless, is composed of swarms of individual creatures called “hordelings”—their preferred term, as they are not native to Roshar.

Suddenly, the Sleepless notice that the mural is inert. Realizing Rysn has somehow accepted the Dawnshard, Nikli abandons the negotiation and seizes her. Before he can harm her, a massive, rumbling roar shakes the entire cavern, interrupting the attack.

Chapter 19 Summary

On the beach, Huio uses his newly summoned Shardhammer to kill the sea monster, but six more rise from the ocean.

In the cavern, a healthy and vivid Chiri-Chiri, Rysn’s larkin pet, appears and challenges the three Sleepless. Nikli identifies her as one of the island’s “Ancient Guardians” and Rysn realizes that Chiri-Chiri—not the Dawnshard itself—brought her to Akinah. Realizing she now has something the Sleepless desperately want, Rysn reopens negotiations. She proposes a multi-layered lie: The public story will be that Rysn traded for the treasure by agreeing to train some Sleepless to better imitate humans, while the Sleepless trade the Shardplate and Soulcasters to Rysn in exchange for that training and aid.

The Sleepless agree on two conditions: Rysn must never become a Radiant, and she cannot speak of the Dawnshard without their permission. Nikli explains that the Dawnshards are not objects but the four primal “Commands” that created all things and were ultimately used to undo Adonalsium. The deal is struck, though it is revealed three sailors died on the beach. Cord accepts responsibility for keeping the secret but says she will first train as a warrior before considering the role of the Dawnshard’s guardian. Finally, Nikli reveals that Rysn does not merely bear the Dawnshard—she is now the Dawnshard.

Epilogue Summary

As the expedition departs Akinah, Huio gently tells Lopen that his constant jokes can be hurtful. Lopen accepts the criticism and, alone in his cabin reflecting with Rua, resolves to protect people even from himself. At that moment his spren, Rua, becomes a Shardblade and the Stormfather declares the Words accepted.

Aboard the Wandersail, now free of the storm surrounding Akinah, Rysn discovers her senses are supernaturally heightened—colors seem more vivid and sounds are more musical. Captain Drlwan reports that before Rysn returned, the Sleepless on the ship told the crew that Rysn had refused to bargain for her own safety unless the entire crew was included. As a sign of her newfound respect, Drlwan invites Rysn to steer the ship on their next voyage.

Rysn notices one of the Sleepless’ hidden hordelings in her cabin, remaining with her under the terms of their agreement. She feels the power of the Dawnshard within her, beginning to understand it as a divine Command embodying the power to change.

Chapter 16-Epilogue Analysis

Plunged into the ocean near Akinah, Rysn is struck by a traumatic memory of her fall, recalling the “abject sense of helplessness” (224) that followed. Once safe in an underwater cavern, her first instinct is to salvage the ruby fabrials from her ruined hovering chair and fashion a new levitating bench. This act of immediate, practical invention demonstrates Accommodation as a Path to Empowerment. Rysn responds to danger by adapting her surroundings with the tools available to her. Her quick invention shows how accommodation remains a practical, ongoing process shaped by need, available materials, and problem-solving. Her agency emerges through ingenuity, preparation, and her effort to maintain movement through the cavern after losing one mobility aid. This is further clarified when she willingly gives up the rubies—her source of mobility—to power Cord’s Shardplate, supporting collective defense at a real cost to her own movement. Her leadership is thus defined by pragmatic problem-solving and a capacity for strategic choice, establishing her authority through judgment, adaptation, and responsibility for others.

Confronted by the Sleepless, Rysn transforms the cavern into a negotiating room by placing a bench between herself and Nikli as a formal Thaylen deal table. This deliberate action brings the encounter within the familiar structure of Thaylen commerce, where her skills give her a measure of control. She challenges the Sleepless’s long-standing strategy, arguing that their methods have failed and that their secrecy has drawn more unwanted attention. Rysn’s critique embodies the theme of The Dangers of Secrecy, exposing how isolation and concealment can create new dangers for the Sleepless and those who reach Akinah. Her proposed solution—a multi-layered fabrication designed to misdirect enemies—illustrates that Change as a Strategy for Survival requires active planning, flexible thinking, and quick response. Cord’s attempted Horneater verbal challenge fails because Nikli is not bound by the relevant ancient pact in this situation. The scene places Cord’s formal challenge beside Rysn’s flexible negotiation, emphasizing the need to adapt available knowledge to the circumstances at hand.

The narrative’s major turning point occurs when Rysn observes a mural of a shattered sun and accepts the mental command to “CHANGE” (233). This act connects Rysn’s personal adaptability with the novella’s larger cosmological stakes, as the Command enters her mind and changes her relationship to Akinah’s secret. The mural marks the place where Rysn encounters The Dawnshard, linking visual imagery, command language, and revelation without turning the mural into a separate symbol. Nikli’s later explanation that the Dawnshards are four primal Commands used in the creation of the universe recasts the story’s central conflict on a cosmological scale. Rysn’s transformation expands her identity and responsibilities, as Nikli states, “She is the Dawnshard now” (276). The novella concludes with tangible evidence of this internal shift, as Rysn’s senses become supernaturally heightened. This alteration shows that The Dawnshard reshapes Rysn’s perception of the world and connects her to a larger network of power, secrecy, and responsibility.

The parallel storyline on the beach provides a more intimate exploration of personal change. Injured after losing Stormlight, Lopen tries to swear the Third Ideal of the Windrunners, and he is unable to speak the words because he has yet to reach the personal insight the Ideal requires. Huio achieves the Ideal through a selfless act of protection, stepping between the monster and his injured cousin. This moment prepares for Lopen’s own moment of reckoning in the closing scene. Huio’s quiet criticism—that Lopen’s constant jokes can be hurtful—forces him to confront the negative impact of his defining personality trait. His breakthrough comes during solitary reflection, when he vows to protect people “Even from myself” (284). This introspective oath marks an important stage in his personal growth, reflecting his willingness to take responsibility for how his actions affect others. Lopen’s journey mirrors one of the novella’s main thematic arcs, showing that Change as a Strategy for Survival also applies to personal behavior, relationships, and the ways people learn to protect one another.

The novella’s structure, which alternates between the tense negotiation in the cavern and the violent battle on the beach, juxtaposes different approaches to protecting others. Rysn’s success depends on negotiation, empathy, logic, and persuasion. Huio protects others through physical courage and selfless action. By alternating between these plotlines, the narrative shows strength through negotiation, protection, accountability, and care for others. Rysn’s successful deal to save her crew and Lopen’s quiet achievement of his next Ideal emphasize protection and responsibility. Captain Drlwan’s later invitation for Rysn to steer the ship acknowledges the leadership she has earned through her judgment, willingness to accept responsibility for her crew, and successful negotiation with the Sleepless.
