Cassie decides she must understand the reasons behind Bobby’s troubling behavior. Believing the answers are in the journal and notes, Cassie resolves to ask Nick to translate their Ukrainian text. She once again feels a conflict between her loyalty to Henry and her growing connection to Nick, but she prioritizes helping Bobby and calls him. Nick is relieved she isn’t canceling their upcoming date and agrees to come over immediately. To avoid waking her daughter, Birdie, and Bobby, Cassie asks him to meet on the back patio.

When Nick arrives, Cassie explains that Bobby has been having flashbacks and suggested the translation herself. As they begin, Nick organizes the dated journal entries and loose papers chronologically. For two hours, he translates while Cassie types. They discover that “P” from an earlier note was Pavlo, Bobby’s first love, and that Bobby had a sister named Alina, a fact previously unknown to the family. This new information helps Cassie connect Bobby’s habit of hoarding food to the journal’s mention of Stalin’s men confiscating grain.
