Social Context: COVID-19 Restrictions

Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage is set against the backdrop of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, which caused over 7 million deaths worldwide, over a million of which occurred in the United States. For the rest of the world’s population, the pandemic was a time of severe social restrictions.

Shortly after Belle Burden; her husband, James; and their children traveled to their luxurious home on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, in the spring of 2020, the US (and much of the world) implemented mandatory restrictions and quarantine in response to the spread of COVID-19. In March, Massachusetts governor Charlie Baker issued an emergency order banning gatherings of more than 25 people and closing schools and other childcare facilities.

This time was defined by extreme isolation. Schools switched to remote learning. Offices, churches, restaurants, and community centers shut down. Social distancing was enforced; people were advised to be six feet apart at minimum. This effectively meant that nuclear families were sheltering in place without external support. Thus, when James announced that he was leaving Burden, she felt trapped: The social isolation of the restrictions was compounded by her heartbreak. However, Burden also reveled in the lockdowns because she could more easily hide her shame about James’s abandonment, finding the space to process her grief in private.

Burden’s experience of the pandemic is notably privileged; she is an heiress and descendent of Babe Paley, a famous American socialite and magazine editor. As most of the world experienced medical, financial, and personal devastation, Burden lived on her expansive private property and had no financial concerns.

Genre Context: Memoir

Strangers is a memoir of Burden falling in love with, marrying, building a family with, and being abandoned by her husband, James. Like autobiographies, memoirs are “written from the perspective of the author”; however, while autobiographies typically detail entire life stories and rely on facts, memoirs are a more flexible form that focuses on “an important part of [the author’s] life,” centering the author’s “feelings and assumptions” with the flexibility to recount the “story as [the author] remembers it” (Dukes, Jessica. “What Is a Memoir?Celadon Books).

Subgenres of this kind of writing include transformational, confessional, professional, celebrity, and travel memoir. Transformational memoirs trace a life-changing era or experience in the author’s life, detailing how the author changed and why. Professional memoirs feature stories of the workplace or life-changing vocational experiences, while celebrity memoirs provide insight into famous cultural figures’ lives, often to contrast or correct media accounts. Travel memoirs, as the name suggests, depict journeys that have contributed to personal growth.

Originating in Christian conversion narratives popularized in the 17th century, modern transformational memoirs include The Glass Castle (2005) by Jeannette Walls and Educated (2018) by Tara Westover, both about escaping deeply dysfunctional families. Confessional memoirs often reveal disturbing secrets about the author’s past; examples such as Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar (1963) and Elizabeth Wurtzel’s Prozac Nation (1994) highlight women’s writing about mental health in particular. Strangers functions as both a transformational and confessional memoir. Burden reveals the intimate details of her marriage with and divorce from her husband and explores how the shocking end to her intimate relationship changed her.
