Chapter 37 Summary

Sam finally reaches Sanchez on her third attempt. He apologizes for the delay, explaining that he has been overwhelmed since the press conference. He shares confidential information: Forensics recovered skin cells from under Bonnie Tidwell’s fingernails, indicating she scratched the Butcher without drawing blood. The DNA was run through CODIS but yielded no match.

However, the DNA shares genetic markers with DNA found on PJ Wu, proving a father-son relationship between the two killers. The father killed Bonnie Tidwell; the son killed PJ Wu.

Sam is stunned. Both she and Sanchez express frustration that they seem to be missing an obvious piece of the puzzle. Sanchez is flying to Sacramento soon with a warrant to search Bonnie’s house. He has left five messages for Edward, who is not returning his calls. Sam offers to reach out, as Edward usually responds to her, and Sanchez asks her to share the DNA findings to emphasize the urgency.

Chapter 38 Summary

In Matt’s kitchen, Edward discusses Lucy while eating champorado. He describes Lucy as rebellious and troubled from a young age. When she became pregnant as a teenager, she wanted an abortion, and Edward would have permitted it, but Matt’s grandmother insisted on keeping the baby and confined Lucy to prevent drug use during pregnancy.
