A Dangerous Path is a book in the Warriors: The Prophecies Begin series, a fantasy saga in which wild cats live in rival Clans governed by a strict warrior code and guided by StarClan, the spirits of their ancestors. The story picks up after a devastating forest fire has ravaged ThunderClan's territory.

In the prologue, a pack of guard dogs escapes from a fenced compound in the fire-damaged forest. The pack leader digs beneath the fence over several nights until the entire pack squeezes through into the wild. As they run free, their minds unite around one instinct: to kill cats.

At a Gathering, the monthly truce meeting of the four Clans at a neutral clearing called Fourtrees, Fireheart, ThunderClan's deputy, attends in place of his leader Bluestar, who is recovering from smoke inhalation. He is stunned to see Tigerclaw, the former ThunderClan deputy banished for murder and treason, standing on the Great Rock, the boulder from which leaders address Gatherings, as Tigerstar, the new leader of ShadowClan. Tigerstar explains that the previous leader Nightstar died of illness and that StarClan sent an omen foretelling a great new leader. Fireheart learns from the RiverClan warrior Mistyfoot that his best friend Graystripe, who left ThunderClan for RiverClan, is being sidelined. Fireheart worries about a dangerous secret: Mistyfoot and her brother Stonefur are Bluestar's biological kits, given away to RiverClan as infants.

When Fireheart reports Tigerstar's rise, Bluestar spirals into paranoia and despair, declaring StarClan has abandoned ThunderClan. Cinderpelt, ThunderClan's young medicine cat, tells Fireheart about a disturbing StarClan dream in which harsh voices called "Pack, pack" and "Kill, kill." Fireheart dismisses it. While hunting with Sandstorm, a ThunderClan warrior and his close companion, he meets Graystripe at the RiverClan border and learns Tigerstar has been conferring with RiverClan's deputy Leopardfur, raising fears of an alliance.

Early signs of the dog threat go unrecognized. Whitestorm, a senior warrior, reports dog scent near Snakerocks, a rocky area on ThunderClan territory, but Fireheart assumes a pet dog wandered from its owners. He assesses the oldest apprentices for warrior status, but Bluestar refuses to promote any, insisting their mentors are traitors. While escorting Cinderpelt to the sacred site of Highstones, Fireheart learns from ShadowClan's medicine cat that StarClan never granted Nightstar the traditional nine lives of leadership, suggesting StarClan truly intended Tigerstar to lead.

During a search for Graypool, a frail RiverClan elder, Fireheart witnesses a critical encounter. The confused Graypool mistakes Tigerstar for Oakheart, the deceased father of Mistyfoot and Stonefur, and reveals she raised two ThunderClan kits. Tigerstar presses for the mother's identity, but Graypool stumbles and falls fatally against a rock. Fireheart hides Tigerstar's involvement, realizing Tigerstar now knows ThunderClan kits were placed in RiverClan, though not whose they were.

Evidence of the dog pack mounts as patrols find dung, prey remains, and fresh scent near Snakerocks. Bluestar irrationally blames WindClan for stealing prey. A hawk carries off Snowkit, a deaf kit who cannot hear warnings, and Bluestar interprets the tragedy as proof StarClan is at war with ThunderClan. At the next Gathering, Leopardstar announces that Crookedstar, the aging RiverClan leader, has died and she now leads RiverClan. Graystripe privately warns Fireheart that Leopardstar plans to reclaim Sunningrocks, disputed border territory. Bluestar publicly accuses WindClan of prey theft, and Fireheart spots Darkstripe, a ThunderClan warrior he distrusts, speaking privately with Tigerstar.

Bluestar orders a dawn attack on WindClan. Fireheart, certain WindClan is innocent, defies the order by secretly traveling to WindClan's camp and convincing their leader Tallstar to meet Bluestar for peace talks. He sends word through Ravenpaw, a former ThunderClan cat living on a nearby farm. Bluestar reluctantly agrees to talk instead of fight. After a tense standoff, Tallstar swears WindClan has not stolen prey and reveals his Clan has lost prey too. Bluestar grudgingly accepts but deduces Fireheart arranged the meeting behind her back and calls him a traitor, letting him remain deputy only with bitter sarcasm.

Bluestar vanishes and travels alone to Highstones, returning with a StarClan warning of a "pack" that will bring unprecedented destruction. Fireheart connects this to Cinderpelt's dream but cannot yet identify the threat.

Leopardstar attacks Sunningrocks with a RiverClan force. During the battle, Mistyfoot and Stonefur corner Bluestar, and Fireheart blurts out the truth: Bluestar is their mother. The stunned warriors halt their attack. Graystripe saves Fireheart by pulling Leopardstar off him, and Leopardstar banishes Graystripe from RiverClan permanently. Bluestar indifferently allows Graystripe to rejoin ThunderClan. Mistyfoot and Stonefur reject Bluestar, telling her she is no mother of theirs.

After the battle, Bluestar promotes only Fireheart's apprentice Cloudpaw, naming him Cloudtail, because he fought well and does not believe in StarClan. She refuses to promote the remaining apprentices, whose resentment grows dangerously. When Tigerstar's young kits become old enough, Fireheart mentors Bramblepaw himself and assigns Brackenfur, a ThunderClan warrior, to mentor Tawnypaw. He passes over Sandstorm to shield her from Tigerstar's interference, but his evasive explanation offends her. This tension, compounded by Sandstorm's frustration over Fireheart's secret defiance of Bluestar during the WindClan crisis, strains their relationship. Fireheart tells both apprentices the truth about their father's crimes, and Bramblepaw reacts with fury.

Two neglected apprentices take desperate action. Swiftpaw, one of the passed-over apprentices, convinces fellow apprentice Brightpaw to confront whatever has been killing prey at Snakerocks. Fireheart leads a rescue party and finds Swiftpaw dead and Brightpaw barely alive, her face destroyed. She whispers the words from Cinderpelt's dream: "Pack, pack. Kill, kill." Fireheart finally understands the StarClan warnings. Bluestar performs a warrior ceremony for the gravely wounded cat but cruelly names her Lostface to spite StarClan. Cloudtail devotes himself to caring for Lostface, who slowly recovers.

At the next Gathering, Tigerstar demands his kits be surrendered to ShadowClan, citing ThunderClan's failures. The full scope of the threat emerges when Longtail, a ThunderClan warrior and Swiftpaw's former mentor, reports witnessing Tigerstar feeding a dead rabbit to an enormous dog at the Snakerocks caves, with the sounds of many more dogs inside.

Fireheart reconciles with Sandstorm, and they confess their love. A dawn patrol at Snakerocks discovers dead rabbits bearing Tigerstar's scent laid in a trail leading to the ThunderClan camp. Near camp, Cloudtail finds the body of Brindleface, a gentle queen and his foster mother, killed by Tigerstar to give the dogs a taste for cat blood.

Fireheart evacuates the Clan to Sunningrocks and devises a relay plan: Fast warriors at intervals will lure the dogs through the forest to the river gorge. He catches Darkstripe attempting to smuggle the apprentices to Tigerstar and stops him. The relay works, with each runner luring the dogs before climbing a tree and letting the next take over. At the gorge, Tigerstar leaps from hiding and pins Fireheart down as the pack leader catches him in its jaws. Bluestar, who slipped away from Sunningrocks, hurls herself at the lead dog, driving it and herself over the cliff into the churning water.

Fireheart plunges in after Bluestar but cannot keep her afloat. Mistyfoot and Stonefur help pull her to shore. Dying, Bluestar asks her kits to forgive her, and after a moment's hesitation, both do. She tells Fireheart that seeing her Clan help each other restored her faith in StarClan and reveals the meaning of an ancient prophecy: Fireheart himself is the fire that will save the Clan. She tells him he will be a great leader named Firestar. Then she dies.

Fireheart accepts his responsibility. With help from his companions, he carries Bluestar's body home, ready to lead ThunderClan into the uncertain future that Tigerstar's unfinished vendetta promises.
