Plot Summary

Midnight is set in a world where four Clans of wild cats, ThunderClan, RiverClan, WindClan, and ShadowClan, live in a forest divided into territories. The Clans follow a shared warrior code and are guided by StarClan, the spirits of their dead ancestors who communicate through dreams and omens to medicine cats (Clan healers) and leaders.

In a moonlit hollow, the spirits of StarClan gather. Bluestar, a former ThunderClan leader, announces a new prophecy: "Darkness, air, water, and sky will come together, and shake the forest to its roots" (2). Four cats, one from each Clan, must be chosen to hold the fate of the forest. The selections provoke debate, particularly over WindClan's choice of an apprentice (a cat still in training) rather than a full warrior. Bluestar warns that StarClan can choose these cats but cannot help them further.

Brambleclaw, a young ThunderClan warrior and son of the deceased tyrant Tigerstar, dreams of meeting Bluestar. She tells him he has been chosen to meet three other cats at the new moon and "listen to what midnight tells you" (8). He dismisses the dream, reasoning that StarClan would deliver prophecies to Firestar, ThunderClan's leader, or Cinderpelt, the medicine cat, not to an inexperienced warrior.

At the monthly full-moon Gathering at Fourtrees, a sacred meeting place, the Clans exchange news. A prolonged drought has left WindClan without water, and Leopardstar, the RiverClan leader, reluctantly allows WindClan to drink from the river at one location. After the Gathering, Brambleclaw finds his sister Tawnypelt, a ShadowClan warrior who left ThunderClan after feeling blamed for their father's crimes. She reveals she received the identical dream from Nightstar, a former ShadowClan leader. They realize the chosen cats come from different Clans and agree to meet at Fourtrees at the new moon.

At the new moon meeting, Brambleclaw is dismayed when Squirrelpaw, Firestar's headstrong apprentice daughter, arrives uninvited after following him from camp. Tawnypelt comes next, then Feathertail, a gentle RiverClan warrior, accompanied by her protective brother Stormfur, who insists on coming though he was not chosen. Finally, Crowpaw, a hostile WindClan apprentice, appears. Tensions flare. When midnight passes with no sign from StarClan, Crowpaw storms off, declaring the dreams were meaningless. The remaining cats agree to watch for further signs.

Rain breaks the drought. That night, Brambleclaw has a second dream: He is drowning in salt water, swept toward a cliff with a dark cave entrance rimmed by jagged rocks like teeth, and the sun sinks into the water in a pool of fire. Ravenpaw, a former ThunderClan cat living as a loner on a nearby farm, visits camp and warns Firestar about unusual activity near the forest. He also recognizes Brambleclaw's description of the dream. Rogue cats have told Ravenpaw of a distant saltwater sea where the sun sinks into the waves each night. He urges Brambleclaw to take the dream seriously, drawing a parallel to Firestar's own prophecy years earlier.

Brambleclaw crosses into RiverClan territory and convinces Feathertail and Stormfur to journey to this "sun-drown-place," the distant saltwater sea from his dream. He persuades the resistant Crowpaw to join, largely through Feathertail's gentle encouragement. In ShadowClan territory, Tawnypelt agrees immediately, viewing the quest as a way to serve her Clan.

Meanwhile, Cinderpelt sees an omen in a brush fire: a leaping tiger in the flames. She interprets "fire" as possibly referring to Squirrelpaw, who shares Firestar's flame-colored pelt, and "tiger" as referring to Brambleclaw. Firestar begins treating Brambleclaw with unexplained coldness and keeping him away from Squirrelpaw. Neither cat understands why. Firestar's hostility pushes Brambleclaw to commit fully to the journey, determined to prove his loyalty through actions.

Squirrelpaw insists on joining, arguing that Firestar's anger has made camp unbearable and that she will follow alone if Brambleclaw refuses. He agrees. Leafpaw, Squirrelpaw's sister and Cinderpelt's apprentice, intercepts them the next morning. Through a deep empathic bond with her sister, Leafpaw sensed the departure without being told. She brings traveling herbs and promises to keep silent, though she is torn between loyalty to Squirrelpaw and duty to the Clan.

At Fourtrees, the six cats assemble and head across WindClan territory. They rest at Ravenpaw's barn, and he guides them to Highstones, a towering rock landmark at the forest's edge. From the summit, Ravenpaw points out the unfamiliar landscape ahead and bids them farewell. The cats descend into unknown territory, following the setting sun.

The journey is grueling. The cats cross farmland, dodge gardens and dogs belonging to Twolegs (humans), and scatter when they stumble into a neighborhood. Squirrelpaw rescues Stormfur and Crowpaw from two kittypets (house cats) by distracting them. Along the way, Tawnypelt, Feathertail, and Crowpaw each receive a "saltwater sign": Water mysteriously tastes salty only to the individual cat, confirming StarClan's guidance. An old tabby loner named Purdy offers to guide them through a sprawling Twolegplace (human town), but he proves unreliable, leading them in the wrong direction for days. A swarm of rats attacks, and Tawnypelt receives a deep, infected bite on her shoulder.

Back in ThunderClan, Leafpaw senses the injury through her bond with Squirrelpaw. She wakes with an inexplicable urge to check the Clan's supply of burdock root, the remedy for infected rat bites, and chews the root before sleeping, mentally repeating its name, hoping to reach her sister. At the Gathering, all four Clans confirm they have lost cats, and each leader reveals the missing members. Leafpaw tells Firestar she senses Squirrelpaw is alive and far away.

Purdy leads the cats out of the Twolegplace. Squirrelpaw suddenly identifies a taste she has been unable to place: burdock root. She finds the plant near a stream and applies it to Tawnypelt's wound, which begins to heal. Brambleclaw suspects the knowledge came from Leafpaw through the sisters' bond. After recovery, Purdy says goodbye, and the cats set out across open uplands. Late in the day, Squirrelpaw catches the scent of salt on the wind.

The cats race to enormous cliffs overlooking the sea. The sun sinks into the waves exactly as in Brambleclaw's dream. Scrambling along the cliffs, Brambleclaw slips and falls into a cave whose entrance is rimmed with jagged rocks like teeth. Waves surge through, and he nearly drowns before Squirrelpaw drags him to safety. From the darkness, a badger emerges. The cats prepare to fight, but the badger speaks: "Midnight has come. I am Midnight. With you I must speak" (291). The cats realize that "midnight" in the prophecy was not a time but a name.

Midnight leads them to her den and delivers StarClan's message: Twolegs are going to destroy the forest to build a new Thunderpath (road). They will uproot trees, break rocks, and tear the earth apart. All four Clans must leave and find a new home or be destroyed. Midnight tells them that when they return, they must stand on the Great Rock at Fourtrees, the boulder from which leaders address Gatherings, and "a dying warrior the way will show" (299). She warns that the six cats, who began as squabbling rivals, have become one group, and the Clans must do the same. Their journey, she tells Brambleclaw, has only just begun.

In a brief epilogue, Firestar leads a patrol along the Thunderpath. The largest monster (Twoleg vehicle) any of them have ever seen crests the hill, followed by more. The lead monster swerves off the road and rams an ash tree, tearing its roots from the earth. The destruction of the forest has begun.
