The Sight

The Sight, the first book in the Warriors: Power of Three series, is set in a world where four Clans of wild cats, ThunderClan, ShadowClan, WindClan, and RiverClan, live in territories surrounding a lake. Each Clan has a leader, a deputy, and a medicine cat who heals the sick and communes with StarClan, the spirits of their ancestors. A strict warrior code governs loyalty, borders, and honor.

In the prologue, Firestar, the flame-colored leader of ThunderClan, experiences a recurring dream in which an ancient gray warrior delivers a prophecy: "There will be three, kin of your kin, who hold the power of the stars in their paws" (2). This dream has returned every full moon since before his daughters were born, and he has never shared it with anyone. Watching his deputy Brambleclaw and his daughter Squirrelflight in the clearing below, he fears the prophecy is about to reveal itself.

Jaykit, Hollykit, and Lionkit, the kits of Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight, are nearly six moons old, the age at which Clan cats become apprentices. Jaykit is blind from birth but possesses extraordinary hearing and scent. When a patrol discovers a dead fox, Firestar orders search parties for the orphaned cubs and tells the kits to stay in camp. Lionkit convinces his siblings to sneak out and track the cubs, but the cubs are far larger than expected and chase the kits from the den. Jaykit runs blindly toward camp and falls over the cliff edge of the hollow.

Jaykit survives and wakes in Leafpool's medicine den, where he has a dream vision of a tortoiseshell she-cat tending to him. Leafpool, ThunderClan's medicine cat and Firestar's daughter, identifies the visitor as Spottedleaf, a former medicine cat who now walks in StarClan. Leafpool tells Jaykit he can never be an ordinary warrior and suggests he train as her apprentice. He refuses in fury. Meanwhile, Hollykit visits the medicine den and becomes fascinated by Leafpool's healing knowledge. She decides to pursue the medicine cat role herself.

Firestar reprimands the kits but proceeds with their apprentice ceremony. Lionkit becomes Lionpaw, mentored by Ashfur, a ThunderClan warrior. Hollykit becomes Hollypaw, mentored by Leafpool as a medicine cat apprentice. When Jaykit steps forward, whispers ripple through the Clan about a blind apprentice. Firestar assigns Brightheart, a one-eyed warrior who lost half her face in a past dog attack, as his mentor. Jaykit sees the pairing as proof the Clan considers him damaged. He reluctantly accepts and becomes Jaypaw.

Training yields mixed results. Lionpaw thrives, exploring the territory and catching prey on his first day. Hollypaw struggles to memorize herbs. Jaypaw resents being assigned chores like cleaning the elders' den. On a territory tour, he impresses Brightheart by describing the landscape through scent and sound but stumbles during a fox encounter. Frustrated, Jaypaw sneaks out alone toward the lake, wanders into WindClan territory, and falls off a cliff into the water. Crowfeather, a WindClan warrior, rescues him from drowning. When Crowfeather delivers Jaypaw to Leafpool's den, tension between them hints at a prior romantic history. Jaypaw is confined to camp.

At the first Gathering, a full-moon meeting where all four Clans observe a truce, Lionpaw and Hollypaw mingle with apprentices from rival Clans. Lionpaw is drawn to Heatherpaw, a friendly WindClan apprentice. Two strangers emerge from the undergrowth. Graystripe, Firestar's former deputy, was long presumed dead after capture by Twolegs (humans). He returns alongside Millie, a former pet cat he trained as a warrior. The reunion raises the question of whether Brambleclaw or Graystripe should serve as deputy.

Firestar privately asks Leafpool to consult StarClan at the Moonpool, a sacred pool where medicine cats commune with their ancestors. Jaypaw secretly follows her and, when he touches the water and sleeps, enters Leafpool's dream without StarClan's permission. He watches as StarClan cats tell Leafpool that both Brambleclaw and Graystripe have equal claims and that Firestar must choose using his head, not his heart. Leafpool is stunned to learn Jaypaw witnessed her dream. She tells him this power to walk in other cats' dreams marks him as destined to be a medicine cat. He refuses again.

Firestar announces that Brambleclaw will remain deputy, and Graystripe accepts the decision. Tensions with ShadowClan escalate when a patrol discovers ShadowClan has moved its border markers into ThunderClan territory. Brambleclaw leads the response and walks into an ambush. ShadowClan warriors mock Jaypaw and sneer that ThunderClan is filled with outsiders. A fierce battle erupts. Lionpaw races to camp for reinforcements, and Firestar arrives with warriors. Graystripe suggests driving ShadowClan into bramble undergrowth, terrain unfamiliar to pine-forest cats. The tactic works, and ShadowClan retreats. Hollypaw fights skillfully, but Jaypaw struggles without anyone calling out his opponent's movements. Afterward, he admits to himself he may never be a true warrior.

Two turning points follow. Jaypaw travels to the Moonpool alone and enters StarClan's hunting grounds, where he wanders into a dark border region. There he encounters Tigerstar, Brambleclaw's notorious deceased father, and Hawkfrost, Brambleclaw's dead half-brother. They offer to teach him to fight, but Spottedleaf appears, leads Jaypaw away, and tells him his gift holds more power than the sharpest claw. Reluctantly, Jaypaw accepts that his destiny is to become a medicine cat. Meanwhile, Hollypaw, after speaking with Brook, a cat from a mountain tribe outside the Clans, recognizes that her strengths lie in fighting, not healing. She tells Leafpool she must step down. Leafpool is sad but supportive.

Jaypaw asks Firestar to train as a medicine cat just as Hollypaw has vacated the role. Leafpool agrees to mentor him, and Hollypaw is assigned Brackenfur as her warrior mentor. During his half-moon visit to the Moonpool with the other medicine cats, Jaypaw uses his power to enter their dreams. He discovers that Mothwing, the RiverClan medicine cat, does not dream of StarClan, implying she cannot or does not communicate with her ancestors.

Jaypaw overhears a StarClan warning meant for WindClan about an approaching dog attack. He warns Firestar and suggests seizing WindClan territory during the chaos, but Firestar refuses. When the attack occurs, ThunderClan sends a rescue patrol, and Lionpaw saves Heatherpaw by leaping onto a dog. Soon after, greencough, a severe respiratory illness, sweeps through ThunderClan. The essential cure, catmint, has been destroyed by frost. Left alone while Leafpool seeks catmint from RiverClan, Jaypaw tends the sick. When Poppypaw, a ThunderClan apprentice, nears death, Jaypaw enters her dream and finds her walking toward StarClan's hunting grounds. Spottedleaf confirms it is not Poppypaw's time, and Jaypaw guides her back. Leafpool returns with catmint, and the sick cats recover.

At a tense Gathering, Blackstar, the ShadowClan leader, accuses ThunderClan of weakening the Clans by accepting outsiders. Squirrelflight defuses the conflict by proposing a daylight Gathering with friendly apprentice contests. Two days later, Hollypaw wins the fighting contest. During the hunting contest, Jaypaw experiences a vision of Lionpaw choking on earth. He races from camp and finds Lionpaw and Breezepaw, a WindClan apprentice and Crowfeather's son, buried in a collapsed badger set. Jaypaw digs frantically, pulling Lionpaw free and helping extract Breezepaw. At the closing ceremony, Onestar, the WindClan leader, singles out Jaypaw for special recognition before all four Clans.

That night, Jaypaw dreams himself into Firestar's recurring memory of the ancient prophecy. With sudden certainty, he realizes that he, Hollypaw, and Lionpaw are the three cats destined to hold the power of the stars in their paws, and that Firestar has known all along. The story ends with Jaypaw's exhilarating and ominous conclusion: "One day we will be so powerful that we shall command even StarClan!" (363).
