The fourth book in the
Power of Three series, set in the Warriors universe where wild cats live in rival Clans governed by a strict warrior code and guided by StarClan (the spirits of their ancestors), opens in StarClan's hunting grounds. Deceased ThunderClan cats debate the fate of three young apprentices: Hollypaw, Lionpaw, and Jaypaw, subjects of a prophecy granting them "the power of the stars in their paws." Yellowfang insists the apprentices deserve the truth about secrets being kept from them, but Bluestar argues the secret must stay hidden. Yellowfang warns of a coming darkness not even StarClan can prevent.
The three apprentices are returning home from a mission to the Tribe of Rushing Water, a group of mountain cats. Traveling with them are Brambleclaw, ThunderClan's deputy; his mate Squirrelflight; and warriors from other Clans. Along the way, the siblings argue about the prophecy. Hollypaw believes their powers must serve ThunderClan and the warrior code, while Lionpaw wonders whether being more powerful than StarClan places them beyond the code's reach. Jaypaw, who is blind but can sense other cats' feelings and walk in their dreams, warns both siblings to keep the prophecy secret, predicting ordinary cats would find their power frightening.
Back at camp, the apprentices settle into routines that feel inadequate beside the enormity of their secret. Lionpaw goes hunting with his mentor Ashfur and makes an astonishingly powerful leap to catch a thrush that stuns his Clanmates. He lets them think it was luck but feels increasingly isolated. That night, in a dream, the spirit of Tigerstar, a former leader who secretly trains Lionpaw in battle, mocks the prophecy as just a dream and insists only relentless training creates real power.
Meanwhile, Jaypaw works alongside his mentor Leafpool, ThunderClan's medicine cat. He learns that Cinderpaw, an apprentice whose injured leg has been slow to heal, is the reincarnation of Cinderpelt, a former medicine cat who was struck by a vehicle and never became a warrior. StarClan gave Cinderpelt a second life so she could fulfill that dream. Leafpool, desperate to see Cinderpaw succeed, declares her ready for her warrior assessment, but Cinderpaw's weakened leg buckles mid-leap and she crashes onto a fallen tree. Jaypaw accuses Leafpool of rushing Cinderpaw out of guilt over Cinderpelt's fate, and Leafpool admits she has lost confidence in her own judgment.
Cinderpaw's denmates receive their warrior names, Honeyfern and Poppyfrost, while Cinderpaw lies despondent in the medicine den. Jaypaw devises a plan: He secretly takes Cinderpaw to the lake and teaches her to swim, reasoning the water will support her weight while strengthening her muscles. Leafpool discovers them and approves the treatment. Cinderpaw's leg steadily improves. During this period, Jaypaw retrieves a mysterious notched stick from the rising lake, an artifact covered in ancient claw marks that he believes connects him to cats who once used the underground tunnels beneath Clan territory. He also assists Leafpool in delivering three healthy kits born to Millie, a former kittypet (house cat) and mate of the warrior Graystripe.
Tension escalates when patrols find evidence that WindClan has been hunting prey inside ThunderClan's borders. Firestar, ThunderClan's leader, sends a patrol to confront WindClan's leader Onestar, but WindClan's deputy Ashfoot turns them back. The patrol suspects disruptions on the moor have driven away WindClan's prey. Hollypaw insists the reason does not excuse the theft: Borders must be respected or the Clans will unravel. On a border patrol, Lionpaw discovers a tunnel entrance leading to an underground river system he once explored with Heatherpaw, a WindClan apprentice he had a secret relationship with. He realizes Hollypaw found the tunnel first and concealed it because she fears he will resume seeing Heatherpaw.
A mysterious stranger then arrives. A patrol brings in Sol, a tall, brown-and-tortoiseshell loner with no Clan affiliation, who claims he has long looked forward to seeing ThunderClan. In a private conversation with Leafpool and Jaypaw, Sol warns that the sun will go out. He dismisses StarClan as the spirits of ordinary cats, unable to foresee everything. Sol is escorted to the border, and as he passes Jaypaw, he whispers: "Don't forget. Darkness is coming."
Days later, WindClan launches a nighttime invasion of ThunderClan's camp. Onestar accuses ThunderClan of arrogance, declaring WindClan will fight for what they need. WindClan retreats and splits into groups hidden throughout ThunderClan's forest. Firestar mobilizes battle patrols. Lionpaw realizes with guilt that WindClan must have used the tunnel entrance he failed to seal. When Brambleclaw's patrol is ambushed near an abandoned Twoleg nest (a human dwelling), he sends Hollypaw alone to ask Blackstar, ShadowClan's leader, for reinforcements, reasoning ShadowClan would prefer ThunderClan on their border over an expanded WindClan. Hollypaw crosses into ShadowClan territory at night and persuades Blackstar to send warriors.
Jaypaw ventures out to treat wounded Clanmates and discovers that RiverClan has joined the attack. Lionpaw drags Heatherpaw from the fighting and accuses her of revealing the tunnels to WindClan. She insists it was Sedgekit, a young WindClan kit, who boasted about them, but Lionpaw vows to be her enemy forever. He then attacks Crowfeather, Heatherpaw's WindClan mentor, in a blind rage, tearing at his throat until Heatherpaw drags him off. Crowfeather survives, but Lionpaw is horrified at how close he came to killing.
Then a great black disk swallows the sun: a solar eclipse. The forest plunges into cold darkness, and all fighting ceases as cats wail in terror. WindClan and RiverClan flee. Leafpool suggests it must be an omen from StarClan, but Jaypaw knows Sol predicted this and StarClan knew nothing about it. When the sun returns, the Clan discovers Squirrelflight has been silently bleeding from a deep belly wound. Leafpool works desperately to save her while Brambleclaw begs his mate not to leave him. Hollypaw and Lionpaw build a nest around their unconscious mother, and Hollypaw falls asleep pressed against Squirrelflight, pleading for her to survive.
As the Clan recovers, Jaypaw insists that finding Sol matters more than avenging the battle: Sol predicted the eclipse when StarClan could not, and that has vast implications for the prophecy. He convinces his siblings to sneak out of camp and track Sol to an abandoned Twoleg nest. Sol confirms he knows about the prophecy, telling them they may one day surpass StarClan and will have the power to destroy or preserve the warrior code. Jaypaw begs Sol to become their mentor. Sol initially refuses, saying the prophecy will take care of itself, but Lionpaw offers to build him a den outside their territory, and Sol agrees. However, a ShadowClan patrol intercepts the group and brings them before Blackstar, who opens up about his growing doubts. Sol chooses to stay with ShadowClan instead, and the apprentices leave feeling abandoned.
At the next Gathering, a regular meeting of the Clans held under truce, only three Clans arrive. Blackstar, accompanied only by Sol, announces that ShadowClan will no longer attend Gatherings and no longer believes StarClan holds all the answers. No cat challenges him. Walking along the lakeshore afterward, Jaypaw briefly sees moonlight on the water, and Yellowfang appears beside him, saying only that StarClan "must choose our battles carefully" before fading. Jaypaw concludes that StarClan has effectively surrendered.
The next morning, Firestar reassures ThunderClan that the darkness will pass. He names three new warriors: Hollypaw becomes Hollyleaf, Lionpaw becomes Lionblaze, and Cinderpaw becomes Cinderheart, her name a quiet tribute to the spirit of Cinderpelt. The Clan cheers despite the crisis. Jaypaw joins with pride, reflecting that Cinderpelt's destiny has been fulfilled. But privately, he shivers: He believes StarClan's power is fading, the time of the Clans is coming to an end, and only he, Lionblaze, and Hollyleaf can save them.
