Rising Storm

Rising Storm is a book in the Warriors series, a fantasy saga set in a forest divided among four Clans of wild cats governed by the warrior code, a set of ancient traditions dictating loyalty, hierarchy, and ritual. Each Clan is led by a leader who receives nine lives from StarClan, the spirits of deceased warrior ancestors, and is supported by a deputy, a medicine cat, warriors, apprentices, queens (nursing mothers), and elders.

The novel opens with an ominous prologue in an unnamed Clan camp ravaged by illness. A medicine cat receives a vision from StarClan promising a glorious future, but an owl's shadow carries a darker message: The Clan will pay the highest possible price for its coming triumph.

Fireheart, a ginger tom and ThunderClan's newly appointed deputy, struggles to fill the role left by Tigerclaw, a massive dark tabby warrior exiled by Bluestar, the ThunderClan leader, after he tried to kill her. Fireheart was born a kittypet (house cat) and still faces skepticism from some Clanmates. His apprentice and nephew, Cloudpaw, born to Fireheart's kittypet sister Princess, is a skilled hunter but arrogant and dismissive of the warrior code. Fireheart relies on Whitestorm, a respected senior warrior, for guidance as he learns to organize patrols. The elders fret that his naming ceremony broke tradition because Bluestar failed to announce his appointment before moonhigh (midnight), and some see this as a bad omen.

Bluestar's mental state deteriorates sharply after Tigerclaw's betrayal. She is thin, unkempt, and barely eating. When Fireheart brings news that a queen's kits are ready for apprenticeship, Bluestar reacts with paranoid suspicion, even asking about Graystripe, Fireheart's best friend, as if she has forgotten that the gray warrior left ThunderClan to raise his kits in RiverClan after their mother died. She delegates the decision to Fireheart. With help from Cinderpelt, the apprentice medicine cat who walks with a permanent limp, and Yellowfang, an old medicine cat who once served ShadowClan, Fireheart chooses Dustpelt, a brown tabby eager to prove his loyalty after his former closeness to Tigerclaw, and Darkstripe, who had been Tigerclaw's closest ally but chose to stay with the Clan.

Bluestar insists on traveling to the Moonstone, a sacred underground rock where leaders commune with StarClan, with only Fireheart as escort. During the journey, she declares Fireheart her only trustworthy warrior, revealing how deeply Tigerclaw's treachery has shattered her faith. On WindClan territory, hostile warriors confront them, insisting ThunderClan forfeited safe passage by sheltering Brokentail, a tyrannical former ShadowClan leader. Fireheart persuades Bluestar to retreat, knowing she is on her last life. Their failure to reach the Moonstone deepens the Clan's anxiety.

At a full-moon Gathering at Fourtrees, the neutral meeting place of all four Clans, Bluestar announces Fireheart as deputy but refuses to explain Tigerclaw's fate. The other Clans greet his appointment with silence. ShadowClan's patrol is unusually small, and their leader, Nightstar, appears frail.

Two sick ShadowClan warriors, Littlecloud and Whitethroat, are found in ThunderClan territory, begging for medicine. A deadly illness carried by rats is devastating their Clan. Yellowfang recognizes the disease and insists they be sent away. During the escort to the border, Fireheart and Sandstorm, a pale ginger warrior, discover a secret stone tunnel under the Thunderpath (road) that ShadowClan uses to cross. Later, Fireheart discovers that Cinderpelt has secretly been nursing the ShadowClan cats in a root cave, defying Bluestar's orders.

Fireheart notices Cloudpaw growing fat and follows him to a Twoleg (human) house, where the apprentice has been accepting food regularly. Cloudpaw refuses to stop, insisting he can live in both worlds. Shortly afterward, Fireheart and Sandstorm witness Cloudpaw being carried off inside a monster (vehicle), his eyes wide with terror. Fireheart is devastated. Darkstripe eagerly spreads news through camp that Fireheart's kin has returned to kittypet life.

Fireheart dreams of Spottedleaf, a former ThunderClan medicine cat he loved, who warns him to beware an enemy who seems to sleep. He wakes and notices Darkstripe feigning sleep with ears pricked alertly. Fireheart visits the RiverClan border and reconnects briefly with Graystripe but finds he can no longer confide fully in a cat who belongs to another Clan.

One evening, the warrior Mousefur and her apprentice Thornpaw burst into camp bloodied. A swift warrior named Runningwind is missing. Fireheart races to the scene and finds Runningwind dead, with Whitethroat crouching over the body. Fireheart attacks Whitethroat, who flees onto the Thunderpath and is struck and killed by a monster. Fireheart turns to find Tigerclaw at the edge of the road, flanked by rogue cats. Tigerclaw pins Fireheart down and promises to kill every ThunderClan warrior. Graystripe arrives with a RiverClan patrol led by Stonefur, one of Bluestar's secret kits raised in RiverClan without knowing their mother's identity. Together they drive Tigerclaw into retreat. Fireheart institutes permanent guards and increased patrols.

Ravenpaw, a black cat who once fled from Tigerclaw and now lives on a distant farm, arrives with news of a miserable white cat with ThunderClan scent locked in a Twoleg nest. It is Cloudpaw. Fireheart insists on mounting a rescue despite Sandstorm's protests that the Clan needs him. The three cats cross WindClan territory and find Cloudpaw thin and unhappy. When the Twoleg spots them, Cloudpaw escapes through the door, and all four cats flee. On the return journey, a WindClan patrol attacks, but Cloudpaw fights impressively. Back at camp, Bluestar grants permission for him to stay.

After weeks of drought, fire erupts in the forest. Fireheart takes command, ordering the Clan toward the river. When three cats are found missing, he returns to the burning camp with Yellowfang. They find the collapsed elders Halftail and Patchpelt. Fireheart spots Bramblekit, Tigerclaw's young son, clinging to a burning tree and leaps to rescue him. The tree collapses behind them, blocking the camp entrance and cutting off Yellowfang's escape.

Fireheart drags Patchpelt to the Clan, but the elder dies from smoke inhalation. The terrified cats must swim the river to escape the advancing fire. Whitestorm wades in first to demonstrate the crossing is possible, and Sandstorm plunges into the deep central channel, struggling briefly before calling encouragement from the far shore. Fireheart drags the ThunderClan elder Smallear into the water and nearly drowns before Leopardfur, the RiverClan deputy, hauls them out. Crookedstar, the RiverClan leader, grants ThunderClan refuge.

The next day, Fireheart returns to the devastated forest and finds Yellowfang alive but dying in her den. She confesses to killing her own son Brokentail with poisoned berries, a secret Fireheart already knew. She tells him she wishes he had been her son instead, and dies. Spottedleaf's voice whispers that Yellowfang will be safe with StarClan.

Bluestar orders ThunderClan home, harshly rejecting both Graystripe's offer to help rebuild and his implicit wish to rejoin the Clan. Over Yellowfang's body, she declares that StarClan has waged war on ThunderClan and vows never to visit the Moonstone again. At dawn, Fireheart mounts the Highrock, the leader's traditional speaking place, and addresses the Clan for the first time from that position, organizing the rebuilding effort. Cloudpaw distinguishes himself through tireless work, earning his Clanmates' respect.

Bluestar refuses to attend the next Gathering. Fireheart goes in her place. At Fourtrees, ShadowClan's medicine cat Runningnose announces that both Nightstar and the deputy Cinderfur have died and asks the Clans to wait for ShadowClan's new leader. Darkstripe's eyes gleam with excitement. Fireheart looks up at the Great Rock, the large stone where leaders address the Gathering, and sees the massive figure of Tigerclaw, now the leader of ShadowClan.
