Plot Summary

The third book in the Warriors: The New Prophecy series, Dawn continues the story of four wild cat Clans, each living in a distinct territory within a shared forest, governed by a common warrior code and guided by their ancestors in StarClan, the spirit world visible to them as Silverpelt (the Milky Way). Twolegs (humans) and their monsters (machines) are destroying the forest, and five cats sent by StarClan on a quest to the sun-drown-place (the sea) have returned with a warning from Midnight, a wise badger: The Clans must abandon their homes or perish.

The story opens with Firestar, the leader of ThunderClan, leading his starving Clan to a Gathering at Fourtrees, the sacred clearing where all four Clans meet in peace. They arrive to find Twolegs cutting down the four great oaks. Firestar's mate, Sandstorm, declares the forest dead, but Firestar insists the Clan still has hope.

Meanwhile, the five questing cats reach the forest's edge. Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw of ThunderClan, Crowpaw of WindClan, Tawnypelt of ShadowClan, and Stormfur of RiverClan mourn Feathertail, Stormfur's sister, who died saving a group of mountain cats called the Tribe of Rushing Water from a predator. They learn Fourtrees has been destroyed but agree to meet there the following night with their leaders to await the sign Midnight promised: A dying warrior would show the way when they stood on the Great Rock, the boulder where Clan leaders address Gatherings, beneath Silverpelt.

In a parallel storyline, Leafpaw, a ThunderClan apprentice training to become a medicine cat (healer), is trapped in a wire cage inside a Twoleg structure. She befriends Cody, a kittypet (house cat) who encourages her to stay strong. Leafpaw discovers several other forest cats imprisoned nearby, including Brightheart and Cloudtail from ThunderClan and Mistyfoot, the RiverClan deputy. Sasha, a rogue (non-Clan stray) and mother of RiverClan's Hawkfrost and Mothwing, is also brought in. When the Twoleg injures a trapped rogue, Leafpaw directs the captive cats to pass cobweb to treat the wound, feeling useful for the first time since her capture.

Squirrelpaw, Brambleclaw, and Stormfur reach the ThunderClan camp to find it abandoned. Cinderpelt, the ThunderClan medicine cat, explains that Firestar relocated the Clan to Sunningrocks, a bare stone slope near the RiverClan border. She delivers grim news: Leafpaw was caught in a Twoleg trap, a kit and an elder have died, and Cloudtail and Brightheart are missing. At Sunningrocks, Stormfur tells his father Graystripe, the ThunderClan deputy, that Feathertail is dead. After hearing Midnight's warning, Firestar agrees to go to Fourtrees.

The meeting at Fourtrees is a disaster. The Great Rock has been ripped from the earth and overturned. All four leaders gather, but no sign appears. Blackstar of ShadowClan announces his Clan will relocate to Twolegplace, the human settlement beyond the forest. Leopardstar of RiverClan insists the river still provides fish. Tallstar of WindClan begs Firestar to travel with him, but Firestar refuses to go without all four Clans.

Back at Sunningrocks, Squirrelpaw dreams that Spottedleaf, a long-dead ThunderClan medicine cat who visits cats in visions, leads her to the Twoleg nest where Leafpaw is trapped. Squirrelpaw sets out with Sorreltail, a ThunderClan warrior, and encounters Graystripe's patrol. Graystripe organizes a rescue: warriors attack the Twoleg while others pry open cages. Leafpaw, Mistyfoot, Brightheart, Cloudtail, and numerous rogues are freed. But Graystripe stays behind to force open Brightheart's cage, and a Twoleg grabs him and shoves him into a monster that roars away.

Firestar is devastated but refuses to name a new deputy. Conditions worsen: Hollykit, another kit of Ferncloud, a ThunderClan queen, dies from cold, and Shrewpaw, a ThunderClan apprentice, is killed by a monster. Leafpaw reveals an earlier prophecy from Cinderpelt: StarClan warned that "fire and tiger" would destroy the Clan. Squirrelpaw, as Firestar's daughter, represents fire; Brambleclaw, as the son of the dead tyrant Tigerstar, represents tiger. Brambleclaw is unsettled, pointing out that they are the ones urging the Clan to leave, which could be the destruction the prophecy foretells. Meanwhile, Firestar encounters Hawkfrost and his mother Sasha, who confirms Tigerstar was Hawkfrost and Mothwing's father. Brambleclaw is stunned to learn he has half-siblings in RiverClan.

Events accelerate when Tawnypelt begs for help: Twolegs have surrounded ShadowClan's camp. Firestar mobilizes every able warrior, and Brambleclaw brings RiverClan reinforcements. In a chaotic battle amid falling trees, warriors from all four Clans evacuate ShadowClan. Firestar loses a life saving cats from a collapsing tree, but Squirrelpaw distracts a Twoleg so Brambleclaw and Leafpaw can pull him free.

The crisis breaks the deadlock. Mistyfoot announces Leopardstar has agreed to leave because Twolegs have diverted the river. Blackstar agrees as well. Before departure, Cody returns to her Twolegs, promising to watch for Graystripe. Frostfur and Speckletail, ThunderClan's oldest elders, choose to stay behind, too frail for the journey. Mudfur, RiverClan's elderly medicine cat, dies. Sasha asks Hawkfrost and Mothwing to leave RiverClan, but both refuse. She publicly reveals that Tigerstar was Hawkfrost and Mothwing's father, and Firestar urges the Clans to accept them, saying Tigerstar's children have earned their places.

The four Clans leave the forest together, struggling across the ruined moorland. Brambleclaw, Crowpaw, and Tawnypelt risk their lives to distract a pursuing dog so the elders and kits can escape. The Clans shelter at a farm belonging to Ravenpaw and Barley, old friends of Firestar, who provide desperately needed food. At Highstones, a sacred site where a tunnel called Mothermouth leads to the Moonstone, the leaders enter to commune with StarClan. That night, the five questing cats meet on the ridge above, despairing. Then a falling star blazes across the sky and vanishes behind the mountain peaks. They recognize it as the dying warrior: one of StarClan's own falling from Silverpelt to show the way. The Clans must cross the mountains.

The crossing is brutal. Smokepaw, a ShadowClan apprentice, falls from a crumbling ledge to his death. An eagle nearly carries off a kit. Snow blankets the peaks, and the cats are freezing and starving. Rescue comes when Squirrelpaw encounters cave-guards from the Tribe of Rushing Water, who lead the Clans to the Cave of Rushing Water behind a waterfall. The Tribe feeds and shelters them. Stormfur reunites with Brook Where Small Fish Swim, the prey-hunter he loves. Leafpaw visits the Tribe's sacred cave but hears only the Tribe of Endless Hunting, the Tribe's ancestral spirits, not StarClan. That night, she dreams of Spottedleaf beside a starlit lake, and Spottedleaf whispers that StarClan will search for them wherever they go.

Tallstar performs a warrior ceremony for Crowpaw, who chooses his new name, Crowfeather, to honor Feathertail. Stormfur decides to stay with the Tribe and Brook, having lost all his kin in the Clans. In a quiet moment, Squirrelpaw tells Brambleclaw her heart is with ThunderClan and with him.

Firestar privately tells Leafpaw he now understands the prophecy: Squirrelpaw and Brambleclaw destroyed the Clan not through treachery but by leading it away from its old home, an act of courage rather than betrayal. Tribe escorts guide the Clans out of the mountains. They trek through hills and meadows, the old Clan boundaries blurring as warriors from different Clans help one another. At dawn, the Clans crest a ridge. Before them stretches a vast lake reflecting every star of Silverpelt, exactly as Leafpaw saw in her dream. She is certain they have reached the place StarClan intended, and that their warrior ancestors have been with them all along.
